Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 Test: A worthwhile update?

For many years, Roborock was considered the undisputed leader in the field of robot vacuum cleaners. However, it is well known that the competition never sleeps. And so Dreame now holds the throne. This is not only due to the fact that flagships such as the Dreame L20 Ultra (review, € 656.54 *) now outperform comparable upper-class models. Dreame also plays a decisive role in the upper mid-range, as the Dreame L10s Ultra (review, € 385.82 *) proves. In the Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 test, we took a look at the successor to the price-performance cracker.

Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 Test: Familiar optics

At first glance, the Gen 2 of the L10s Ultra looks like the first generation. In view of the stylish design and high build quality, this doesn’t really bother us. Dreame has once again opted for an elegant white tone for both the robot hoover and the cleaning station. Small but subtle silver accents round off the overall look.

In addition to the LiDAR turret, the control unit with three buttons (spot-clean, home, start/stop) and a maintenance flap are located on the top of the robot hoover. The dust container, the WIFI LED and the reset button can be accessed under the lid.

The practical QR code can also be used to access the app directly via the smartphone camera, which speeds up setup. The technology required for obstacle detection is located at the front. The L10 Ultra Gen 2 uses a combination of cross laser and camera. On the side, there are sensors that measure the distance to the wall.

At the rear, Dreame not only places the two charging contacts for charging the battery. This is also where the tank access is located, which the all-in-one station uses to fill the integrated water tank. If you turn the Robo upside down, there are no big surprises. In addition to the two round mops, the side brush and other sensors are also located here, which not only protect against falling down stairs, but are also designed to detect carpets.

The main brush, which is made entirely of plastic, is also included again, which should please pet owners, as experience has shown that less hair gets tangled up here. Only when you take the two mops out of the magnetic holder can you see the most noticeable change compared to their predecessor.

The second generation of the L10s Ultra comes with the retractable mop invented by Dreame, which is designed to make cleaning along the floor and furniture easier. The manufacturer appropriately calls the principle MopExtend. However, we are now also familiar with this concept from competitor models such as a Roborock Qrevo Master (review, € 1,299.00 *).

Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 test: AiO station without hot water

The Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 also comes with a practical all-in-one station that fulfills several functions. Probably the most important of these is the cleaning function, in which it thoroughly rinses the two mops of the smart household helper. The two water tanks for dirty water and fresh water are located under the lid on the top. Unfortunately, the station does not use hot water for mop cleaning.

So if you don’t want to do without it, you still have to go for the Dreame L10s Pro Ultra Heat (review, € 822.82 *). To compensate at least a little for the lack of hot water, Dreame uses a separate cleaning agent. The corresponding tank is located under the silver-colored cover on the front of the AiO station. With every wash, the station automatically adds a little of the fragrant detergent to the water.

Although the predecessor was already capable of this, the second generation has a decisive advantage. While Dreame relied on cartridges for the first L10s Ultra, the gray container can now be easily refilled independently. This is not only more ecological, as less waste is produced. It should also be significantly cheaper for the user in the long term.

In addition to washing the mop, the station also performs other tasks. It not only fills the vacuum cleaner’s battery while it is parked. The station also fills the robot’s integrated water tank. The advantage of this is that the smart household helper can keep its mops wet independently. This means it has to return to the station less often to wash its mops.

Even if there is no hot water wash, there is at least hot air drying. After washing the mop, the station starts drying with hot air via the integrated ventilation. This prevents the formation of bacteria and therefore also unpleasant odors. Behind the silver cover is not only the container for the cleaning agent. The dust bag is also placed here. This is where the dirt that the station vacuums off the Robo after each cleaning session ends up.

Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 test: Navigation and obstacle detection

As already mentioned, the LiDAR technology is located in the small turret on the top. Experience has shown that this works quickly and reliably. As LiDAR relies on laser beams, it works just as reliably in broad daylight as it does in complete darkness. The driving style of the smart household helper is impressive.

On its maiden voyage, it first creates a map of the surroundings and even divides the area into individual rooms. You can then view the result in the app and edit it if necessary. Once the map has been created, the L10s Ultra Gen 2 scans the rooms using the standard system used by other robot hoovers with LiDAR. First it cleans the edge of the room. The interior is then swept in parallel paths.

This principle has proven itself over time and also produces good results with the L10s Ultra Gen 2. It hardly missed any areas in the test. Only narrow passages posed a small problem. Here, the smart household helper was sometimes a little overcautious and didn’t even enter them. Unfortunately, this also happened in areas where it was virtually impossible to get stuck.

Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 test: obstacle detection

Let’s move on to obstacle detection. Like its predecessor, the second generation also relies on a combination of cross laser and camera. The results are then processed by an AI. Unlike the first generation, however, you cannot use the camera as a mobile surveillance camera.

The Robo overcomes thresholds without any problems

Given the current data protection problems that competitor Ecovacs has with its integrated cameras, this is not really a problem. I was really looking forward to the obstacle detection. After all, the predecessor scored really well here. In practice, the second generation also scored well in this discipline. There were only problems in the real endurance test – my flat USB cable

My small, orange USB cable was overlooked

Unfortunately, the smart household helper ran over it and sucked it in. However, the very flat USB cable is also a real challenge, which is a major problem for the majority of robot hoovers. If you are looking for a model with strong obstacle detection, we can highly recommend the Narwal Freo Z Ultra (review, € 899.00 *).

Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 Test: Dreame App

We probably don’t need to say much more about the Dreame app. Together with Roborock, Dreame offers the best app on the entire robot vacuum market. You can already feel this when setting up the vacuum cleaner. As it offers clear step-by-step instructions, even non-experts can quickly set up the L10s Ultra Gen 2 in their own home network.

Once the first maiden voyage including mapping has been completed, you can let off steam in the smartphone application to your heart’s content. Dreame not only allows you to customize the map with things like no-go zones and invisible walls, but also many other adjustable parameters. For example, you can set a cleaning schedule, adjust the suction and mopping function, regulate the behavior on carpets, adjust the behavior of the cleaning station and so on.

Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 Test: Cleaning performance

In the practical test, we confronted the Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 with various types of dirt on different surfaces. We took a close look at both suction power and mopping performance.

Suction power

The increased suction power is probably one of the most significant improvements compared to its predecessor. While the first generation could still boast 5300 Pascal, the successor offers almost double the power with a whopping 10000 Pascal. But can it also transfer this to the floor? It has been able to demonstrate great performance on hard floors. Tiles, vinyl and laminate flooring were no problem for it.

The floating main brush pays off here. This is because it is always at the perfect distance from the floor during the suction process, which prevents annoying clattering, especially on hard floors. A SwitchBot K10+ Pro (review, € 399.99 *) clearly shows how annoying a main brush without a floating bearing can be.

I have to complain at a high level about cleaning in corners. Here, the side brush seems a little overwhelmed. Perhaps Dreame should take a look at the extendable side brush of a Roborock Qrevo. It also performed convincingly on carpets. The ultrasonic sensor on the underside reliably detected my carpet. As soon as it moved over the carpet, it automatically increased its suction power.

A negative surprise was the subsequent look at the main brush. As two long-haired cats and a golden retriever live in my household, pet hair naturally accumulates here. Although the Dreame has a special main brush made exclusively from plastic, a few hairs were still wrapped around it after just two cleaning sessions. Not really annoying, but still a bit of a shame as the user has to remove hair from the main brush from time to time.

Mopping performance

The mopping function is based on the same concept as its predecessor. This means that we once again have two rotating mops that are pressed onto the floor during the cleaning process. It is therefore not surprising that the mopping results are also impressive in the second generation.

The smart household helper was even able to remove stubborn stains from the floor. In the endurance test, I left a jam stain to dry on the floor for some time. After cleaning, only very slight residues were visible. Nevertheless, the Dreame L10s Ultra Gen2 leaves a better cleaning result than its predecessor.

Thanks to MopExtend, the Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 can also clean around the edges

And this is due to the revised design of the mop pads. One of the mop pads can now be extended, which enables significantly better edge cleaning. If the Robo moves along the skirting board or chair legs, the mop pad is quickly extended to avoid leaving an unclean edge.

Conclusion

The Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 is a convincing upper mid-range vacuum and mopping robot with impressive performance and small but significant improvements over its predecessor. With a significantly increased suction power of 10000 Pascal, it offers powerful cleaning on hard floors and carpets. The mopping performance of the L10s Ultra Gen 2 is also impressive. Thanks to the extendable mop pad, it can even reach difficult edges and furniture corners. Even stubborn stains are almost completely removed. The navigation via LiDAR and camera is precise, while obstacle detection is solid but not perfect – especially with flat objects.

The functions of the AiO station are also impressive. I particularly like the switch away from refill cartridges to a freely refillable container for cleaning agents. After all, this decision is not only more sustainable, but also saves the user money. A hot water wash would have been the icing on the cake. However, given the market presence of the L10s Pro Ultra Heat, Dreame would be cutting itself off. Overall, the Dreame L10s Ultra Gen 2 delivers a strong combination of high suction and mopping performance, innovative functions and user-friendliness, making it the top model in its class.
