Edifier WH950NB review – Over-ear headphones with ANC and LDAC

The Edifier WH950NB is a mid-range wireless over-ear headphone above the W830NB we recently tested (our review). Edifier relies on dynamic drivers with a diameter of 40 mm and LDAC (Hi-Res Audio Wireless) for a powerful and detailed sound. In addition, the headphones offer functions such as Active Noise Cancellation and a battery life of up to 55 hours without ANC and up to 34 hours with ANC. The headphones are available in black and ivory, and the price is currently around €130, well below the recommended retail price of €199. We received a black Edifier WH950NB for our test.

Scope of delivery

  • includes the transport case with the over-ear headphones
  • a USB-C to USB-A cable, a jack cable, an airplane adapter and a quick start guide are also included

The Edifier WH950NB comes in a compact black box with blue accents. On the front, in addition to a picture of the over-ear headphones, reference is also made to features such as LDAC (Hi-Res Audio Wireless) and winning the Red Dot Design Award. On the back, another picture of the headphones is shown along with other features and the scope of delivery.

The box contains the transport case, which contains the headphones and the other accessories in a pocket in the lid of the case. The other accessories include a short USB-C to USB-A cable for charging the headphones, a jack cable, an airplane adapter and a user manual. The scope of delivery is therefore very comprehensive and offers everything you would expect in this price range.

Design and workmanship

  • Extendable metal headband
  • Plastic ear cups with leather-look outer sides
  • Very good material quality and workmanship

The Edifier WH950NB is almost completely black. Golden accents such as the two Edifier logos and the edging of the external microphones create a contrast. The headband of the headphones is made of metal, the two sides can be extended by approx. 2.5 cm and are covered with plastic. The headband is well padded and the padding is very soft. The ear cups are oval and made of plastic. They can be rotated by approx. 30° in one direction and 90° in the other. The outer sides have a leather-look surface. The padding of the ear cups is soft, but not as soft as that of the headband.

In addition to the microphones, only the jack connection is located on the left ear cup. In addition to the microphones, the two controls with four buttons, an LED and the USB-C port are located on the right ear cup.

The Edifier WH950NB weighs 296 g without cable. The weight is similar to other over-ear headphones, but the headphones are not particularly light. Edifier uses plastic for the material, with the exception of the headband. However, the material quality and workmanship of the headphones and the carrying case are very good and commensurate with the price.

Operation and adjustment options

  • Operation via two controls with four buttons
  • Edifier ConneX app enables extensive settings

The Edifier WH950NB is operated via the two control elements and by single, multiple or long presses of the four buttons. The middle button serves as the on/off button when pressed and held. The operation can be customized in the app, touch for gesture control is not available.

The Edifier ConneX app is available in English for smartphones. The app displays the paired Edifier devices and enables extensive settings. The ANC, sound effects and sound mode can be adjusted on the start page of the app. The other settings include operation, codec and multipoint. The headphones support simultaneous connection with two devices via Multipoint, but Multipoint is only supported without LDAC.

Practical test and sound quality of the Edifier WH950NB

  • Good operation, but headphones can be operated better with touch and gesture control
  • no wearer detection for automatic pause, resume and switch off
  • high wearing comfort due to the good adaptability to the head and the soft padding

Pairing and connecting the Edifier WH950NB worked quickly and reliably in the test, the connection was stable even across several rooms within buildings.

The volume up button and the on/off button on the headphones are raised and therefore easy to feel, but the volume down button is recessed and harder to feel. The pressure point of the buttons is good. We also found the operation of the headphones to be good in the test, although as with all headphones with few buttons, the wrong action is sometimes performed if the button is pressed several times. In our opinion, headphones with touch and gesture control are often easier to operate.

The Edifier ConneX app allows extensive settings. One setting is the scheduled switch-off after a set period of time. It should be noted that the time period must be set for each use. Unfortunately, the headphones do not have a wear detection function that pauses playback when you take them off or resumes playback when you put them on and automatically switches the headphones off at a later time.

The Edifier WH950NB are very comfortable to wear. The headphones can be easily adjusted to the head thanks to the extendable headband and the rotatable ear cups and sit firmly but not too tightly. The soft padding also contributes to the high wearing comfort. The padding is not replaceable.

We can confirm the stated battery life in the test. With ANC at approx. 50 to 60% of the volume, this was approx. 32 hours and therefore stands out neither positively nor negatively from the mass of headphones. We can also confirm the charging time in the test.

Recording and playback quality

  • Very balanced and clean sound
  • very good ANC with good transparency mode
  • good recording quality

The sound of the Edifier WH950NB is very well-balanced and impressed in the test. Both high and low frequencies are reproduced cleanly and the low frequencies are powerful. While many headphones are particularly suitable for certain music genres due to their bass-heavy tuning, the Edifier WH950NB is equally suitable for all music genres in our opinion.

The sound effects can be adjusted to your own preferences using the app. In addition to the classic, neutrally tuned mode and the dynamic mode, which boosts and emphasizes the highs and lows, you can also adjust the equalizer yourself. The theater mode produces a more spatial sound, which is suitable for films and series, but only to a limited extent for music playback.

The ANC reduces external noise very significantly both indoors and outdoors. The Edifier WH950NB has very good ANC for its price range, but it does not come close to that of more expensive top-of-the-range headphones. The differences between the various ANC modes are rather small, voices are clearly audible in transparency mode and conversations can also be conducted well with the headphones on.

The recording quality of the Edifier WH950NB is good and the voice usually sounds clean. This applies not only in quiet surroundings, but also in louder environments or outdoors, where background noise is significantly reduced.

Edifier WH950NB test: Conclusion

The Edifier WH950NB proved to be good headphones overall in the test. We rate the very balanced and clean sound and LDAC (Hi-Res Audio Wireless) positively. The headphones’ ANC is also very good for the price range. External noise is very clearly reduced and voices are clearly audible in transparency mode. In addition to the very good sound and ANC, the headphones also offer good recording quality, which is ideal for making phone calls. The material quality and workmanship are also impressive. The weight is similar to other over-ear headphones, but the headphones are not particularly light.

On the negative side, we rated the lack of wear detection. This means that playback has to be paused manually every time the headphones are taken off or resumed when they are put on and the headphones have to be switched off manually. Although the app allows you to switch them off as scheduled, this is much more complicated. The app itself is also in need of improvement and could be made more user-friendly. We rate the battery life rather neutrally.

The Edifier WH950NB is currently available for approx. 130 € (as of 23.02.2025). For this you get a good pair of over-ear headphones with many strengths, but also minor weaknesses. Overall, the price-performance ratio is very good.
