Weighing 24.5 kg, the device can be carried short distances thanks to the two handles. For wall mounting, however, you should enlist the help of a second person. The optional extension batteries, by the way, weigh about 16.5 kg.

Display and Controls

The unit itself features a clear display that shows the most important operating data at a glance: PV input power, total input power, battery level in percent with a bar graph, current grid feed-in power, the status (off-grid or grid-connected operation), as well as warnings in case of overheating or low battery temperature.

It also features status icons for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, active EPS or UPS (uninterruptible power supply) functions, heating mode, connected smart meters or smart sockets, and an indicator for parallel connections with additional units. The device is operated via four separate switches: a main switch, a switch for island/emergency power mode, a switch to turn the grid feed on or off, and a dedicated USB switch. Installation and Setup

FOSSiBOT touts a plug-and-play design, and setup is indeed straightforward. If desired, you can first mount the wall bracket and hang the device. Of course, it can also be placed on the floor without any issues. Next, connect the solar modules via the PV input. Now just plug the AC cable into the outlet—and you’re done. Important for Germany: The standard grid feed-in is limited to 800 W, which complies with current regulations for balcony power plants.

According to the manufacturer, an increase to up to 2,400 W is permitted only after consulting with the responsible grid operator and in accordance with locally applicable regulations, and is primarily intended for users with higher self-consumption and the appropriate authorization. As with any balcony power plant, however, registration in the market master data registry is mandatory.

App and Smart Features (HEMS)

At the heart of the system is the FOSSiBOT app for iOS and Android. This app allows you to conveniently control the balcony power plant.

The app promises:

  • Real-time monitoring: When used with FOSSiBOT Smart Plugs or Shelly 3EM or Shelly Pro 3EM meters, home energy consumption can be tracked in real time, making energy waste visible.
  • Prioritized Energy Sources: According to the manufacturer, the system uses solar energy first, then the battery storage, and only as a last resort grid power to minimize costs.

Important to know: According to the manufacturer, connecting to electricity pricing platforms may incur additional costs from third-party providers—this is not directly included in the FOSSiBOT app but depends on the respective rate provider. Those who do not use a dynamic electricity rate plan forgo some of the potential savings but still benefit from the pure emergency power and storage functions.

The app does what it’s supposed to, but it can’t really compete with the software solutions from market leaders like Zendure or Anker SOLIX. This applies primarily to the overview screen. Newcomers to energy storage systems, in particular, will need to allow for a certain learning curve here. Added to this are some annoying localization issues, such as occasional translation errors. FOSSiBOT will need to release updates to address these in the future.

Performance in Everyday Use

When connected to the grid, the FBP1200 delivers up to 800 W of feed-in power—which is the current limit allowed in Germany for balcony power plants. According to the manufacturer, in the event of a power outage, the system switches to off-grid mode within 1 ms and then provides up to 1200 W, which should be sufficient to power essential devices such as a refrigerator, router, lighting, or chargers.

This uninterrupted switchover works similarly to a traditional UPS, but with significantly more usable capacity in the background. The PV input can handle up to 2000 W, though FOSSiBOT recommends connecting up to six SP420 solar modules with identical specifications.

According to the manufacturer, a full charge should be possible in about an hour under optimal sunlight conditions and with a full array of modules. However, anyone who wants to utilize the full 2000 W of PV power should consider adding at least one expansion battery so that the solar yield can actually be stored rather than going to waste.

A battery heater is built in for cold winter days: If charging occurs at temperatures below 0 °C, a heating mode automatically activates, gradually warming the cells until they reach at least 10 °C, thereby protecting them from cold damage. Combined with an operating temperature range of -20 °C to 55 °C and IP65 certification, the device can be used outdoors year-round.

Expandability and System Combinations

Additionally, according to the manufacturer, up to four FBP1200 units can be connected in parallel to the grid, enabling a peak total feed-in power of 4,800 W across four separate outlets —a scenario that, however, is relevant only for larger properties with correspondingly high energy consumption and should in any case be coordinated in advance with a licensed electrician and the utility provider. FOSSiBOT itself points out that a licensed electrician should be consulted for power ratings exceeding 2,400 W or device capacities exceeding 15 kWh.

Who is the FBP1200 suitable for?

The FBP1200 is aimed less at users who are simply looking for an affordable entry-level balcony power plant, and more at anyone who has the following priorities from the start:

The FOSSiBOT FBP1200 has convinced me that the all-in-one approach is worthwhile for balcony power plants—and at a price that’s quite impressive. For a suggested retail price of €699, you get an inverter, charge controller, and battery all in one enclosure, plus an emergency power function and app control—all without needing to call an electrician. Compared to individual components or similarly equipped systems from the competition, this is a truly fair deal. IP65 certification and battery heating also ensure that the system can withstand outdoor conditions year-round, and the emergency power switchover within 1 ms is a real plus in everyday life during power outages. There are some minor drawbacks with the app, which doesn’t quite match the maturity of Zendure or Anker SOLIX.
