Genesis Holm Modular: Flexible gaming desk in the test

The desk often plays an underestimated but central role in a personal gaming setup. With the Genesis Holm Modular, a new model is on the test bench that aims to impress above all with its modular expandability. For this Genesis Holm Modular test, I took a closer look at the 160-centimeter version of the desk to find out whether it can withstand the demands of everyday use. It quickly became apparent that although the modular concept offers promising approaches, it still has a few hurdles to overcome in the details.

Packaging and accessories

The desk arrives at your home in a comparatively compact cardboard box, which is surprisingly heavy due to the high total weight of the sturdy metal construction. Opening the packaging reveals a well-structured interior, with all individual parts protected from transport damage by polystyrene and foil. In addition to the actual table frame and table tops, the scope of delivery also includes a practical drinks holder and a sturdy headphone holder. These two accessories can be flexibly mounted at different points on the frame and can also be attached at different angles.

The package also includes an RGB LED strip with associated remote control, which is designed to create the right gaming atmosphere. This can be attached to the back of the desk and is supplied with power via a USB cable. This allows it to be connected to the PC, which then switches it on and off together with the PC. The enclosed remote control can be used to set the pattern, speed and brightness of the lighting.

The tabletop itself does not consist of one continuous element, but is divided into three separate wooden segments. Although this makes transportation in the compact box considerably easier, it places particular demands on stability and subsequent accuracy of fit during assembly. All the screws and tools required for assembly are included in the package, meaning that no additional equipment is required.

Assembly in practice

Ideally, you should get a second person to help you assemble the Genesis Holm Modular, as some of the steps involved in aligning the frame are much easier with two people. The enclosed instructions in booklet format guide you step by step through the entire process and are easy to understand thanks to clear drawings. Overall, assembly takes about an hour if you proceed without rushing and tighten the screws carefully. The fact that the threads in the metal frame are precisely cut and the screw holes in the table top are already provided with metal threads was a positive feature. The metal frame construction already gave a very robust impression during assembly.

An interesting detail of the assembly system is the telescopic frame, which can be adjusted in width from 120 to 180 centimeters. This makes it possible to flexibly adapt the frame to different tabletop sizes if you want to use a different segment in the future. My test package included the 160-centimeter tabletop, which was relatively easy to attach by extending the frame to the required length. The connection between the legs and the cross struts is made using solid screws, which ensure that the base does not wobble.

Optics and design

Visually, the Genesis Holm Modular has a sleek, black design that blends seamlessly into modern gaming or study rooms. The massive metal table legs emphasize the masculine gaming look and at the same time ensure a high degree of stability. Thanks to the powder coating of the metal parts, the surface is scratch-resistant and resistant to fingerprints. Genesis uses a rough texture for the tabletop, which is pleasant to the touch and minimizes light reflections from screens.

A nice extra is the included RGB LED strip, which can be attached to the back of the desk. This provides subtle illumination of the wall behind it in various predefined patterns, which not only looks stylish, but also relaxes the eyes during night-time gaming sessions. However, the light from the RGB LED strip falls mainly under the desk and only partially on the wall behind the screens.

Workmanship in detail

Although the frame of the Genesis Holm Modular impresses with its robustness, the tabletop reveals significant weaknesses on closer inspection. The quality of workmanship on the edges and corners of the tabletop is particularly annoying, with the black coating missing in places. As soon as I unpacked the table, I noticed small chips of paint on several corners, exposing the raw wood underneath. These flaws considerably spoil the initial impression and cast doubt on the long-term durability of the edge coating with daily use, for example when the desk chair rubs against the tabletop.

Another annoying problem arises from the transitions between the three tabletop segments, which are not even when assembled. The middle section of the table top is noticeably higher than the two side sections, which leads to uneven joints and slightly sloping edges. This difference in height massively disrupts the smooth operation of the mouse in everyday use, as the mouse gets stuck on these edges. Even the use of a large, thick Deskmat cannot completely conceal or compensate for this physical flaw. For most gamers who rely on lightning-fast and precise mouse movements in their games, this uneven surface proves to be a noticeable annoyance. The only way to avoid this problem is to use a very high mouse sensitivity, which allows the mouse to remain exclusively on the middle segment of the tabletop. In this case, the outer two segments of the tabletop remain purely as a “storage surface”. Genesis’ own product images do not show this flaw, which suggests that this is a manufacturing problem.

Cable management and channels

A real highlight of the Genesis Holm Modular is the well thought-out cable management, which keeps things tidy on and under the desk. There is a generously dimensioned storage tray on the underside of the table top, which easily accommodates one or two multiple sockets. This allows power supply units, USB hubs and extra-long cables to be stowed away out of sight, giving the entire setup a clean look. The open design of the shelf also facilitates quick access if you want to connect a new device, such as an additional monitor, at a later date. Cable clutter is a thing of the past with this well thought-out solution, as all cables are neatly bundled together.

Cable management also includes the integrated cable ducts that run through the inside of the metal table legs. In theory, the idea of routing cables invisibly through the legs to the floor sounds extremely promising. In practice, however, threading thicker cables, such as power plugs for monitors, proves to be extremely fiddly and frustrating. The passages are simply too narrow, which unnecessarily prolongs the installation work and requires patience. Anyone who frequently changes their peripherals or has to re-route cables will probably quickly avoid these ducts and switch to alternative solutions.

Height adjustment and modularity

The desk offers manual height adjustment, which can be locked in five predefined levels of 70, 75, 80, 85 to 90 centimeters. Although this makes it possible to adapt to different body heights, it does involve considerable effort in everyday use. To change the height, you have to take the weight off the table and manually loosen and retighten the screws on the legs. Spontaneous adjustment between sitting and standing activities is therefore impossible, as the system was designed for permanent adjustment. This mechanical concept is therefore hardly suitable for users who are looking for a desk at which they can also stand. However, the Genesis Holm Modular is not intended as a height-adjustable desk in the classic sense anyway and this mechanism is sufficient for a one-off adjustment to the user of the desk.

However, the most important unique selling point of the model is its modularity, which is made possible by the telescopic frame and expandable design. The frame can be flexibly adjusted and the table top can be extended using optional panels or corner sets from Genesis. The maximum load capacity of 60 kilograms is completely sufficient for a typical gaming setup with a few monitors, PC and accessories. Nevertheless, you should keep an eye on the weight when the frame is extended to the maximum so as not to jeopardize stability. The modular system offers creative hobbyists many possibilities, but requires the purchase of special accessories.

Ergonomic features

In day-to-day use, the Genesis Holm Modular scores first and foremost with its excellent legroom, as there are no lower cross struts in the way under the tabletop. You can move around freely and there is even room for a mobile pedestal under the worktop if required. The working height can be easily adjusted to your own needs during initial assembly, which promotes a healthy sitting posture. The rounded front edge of the table top also helps to prevent unpleasant cuts to the forearms when typing. These aspects make the table a solid base for long work or gaming sessions.

However, the test revealed a slight conflict when used with the in-house Genesis Nitro 800 gaming chair. The front crossbar directly under the tabletop is positioned in such a way that the armrests of the chair inevitably catch on it when rolling up to it if the height of the desk and the desk chair are set similarly. As a result, the chair cannot be pushed completely under the desk, which means that space is lost in the room. If you want to counteract this, you must either lower the armrests of the chair completely or adjust the height of the desk or chair.

Suitability for everyday use

The Genesis Holm Modular impresses with its high stability, as nothing wobbles or vibrates even during hectic movements. The metal legs effectively absorb shocks so that monitors always remain stable and secure on their feet. The matt surface structure of the table top is also pleasantly cool to the touch and can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. The cup holder supplied also proves to be extremely practical for positioning liquids safely away from the expensive hardware. All in all, the table offers a solid mechanical base.

Conclusion

The Genesis Holm Modular is currently available at a price of around 200-250 euros. The table faces stiff competition in this price segment.

A well-known competitor is the IKEA Utespelare, which is available for 199 euros. Although the Swedish alternative offers a continuous work surface, it also appears less solid and stable in comparison. The cable management is also simpler here. The holder under the table consists only of a fabric net that is stabilized by a strut. However, if you can do without the modularity and gaming gimmicks, this is a more budget-friendly alternative.

If you look at other desks with a gaming focus such as the Ultradesk Momentum (currently available for around 180 euros, regularly 259 euros), the Genesis Holm Modular comes under pressure. With a width of 152 cm, the Ultradesk Momentum is slightly narrower, but scores points with a continuous, undivided desk surface, as it does away with the modular system. It also comes with practical extras such as an integrated drinks and headphone holder.

All in all, the Genesis Holm Modular leaves a mixed picture in the test with clear bright and dark sides. On the plus side, there is the outstanding stability of the metal construction and the exemplary cable management under the table, which effectively prevents cable clutter. The uncomplicated assembly and the modular concept with the extendable frame were also very convincing in the practical test. Added to this is the generous scope of delivery with LED strip, headphone and drinks holder.

However, the flaws in the build quality weigh heavily, especially the peeling paint on the edges and the uneven panel transitions. These noticeable edges impair daily use and mouse tracking when gaming, which is actually a focus of the Genesis Holm Modular.

It is therefore difficult to make an unreserved recommendation to buy the Genesis Holm Modular. Basically, the Genesis Holm Modular is only worth buying if you want to make use of the modularity on offer or if you absolutely love the other goodies of the desk or the design. However, if you can overlook the uneven tabletop, you will get a stable centerpiece for your setup.
