If there’s one thing you can be sure of with Govee, it’s that the manufacturer of smart lighting always has exciting new ideas up its sleeve. After the innovative Uplighter Floor Lamp, which we were able to test extensively last year, the manufacturer is now following up with an exciting ceiling light. The Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is no ordinary ceiling light. Govee advertises it as the first ceiling light with a figurative light display and after a few weeks with the device, I can say that this is no empty marketing statement, as the test reveals.

Govee Ceiling Light Ultra test: scope of delivery, design and workmanship
With a diameter of 535 mm and a depth of 7.7 cm, the Ceiling Light Ultra is quite a chunk. The new ceiling light weighs 4.32 kg including its own weight and has a diameter of 53 centimeters. This makes it clear that if you are looking for a compact, unobtrusive light, you are in the wrong place. Govee deliberately focuses on presence: the luminaire should be visible, it is itself the design object.
The housing is made of HB-ABS plastic on the outer frame, while the back cover, bracket and both diffuser layers are made of 5VA flame-retardant PC plastic. 5VA is the highest UL classification for self-extinguishing plastics. This virtually eliminates the risk of fire. There is also a built-in snap hook that secures the luminaire against falling during installation and continuous operation. This is not a marketing feature, but a real safety benefit for a 4-kilo device above the sofa. Smart thinking, Govee!
The design highlight is the two-layer system: the front panel takes care of the main display with all lighting effects as well as the general lighting. The separate backlight illuminates the wall all around. The adapted backlight diffuser provides 30 cm of illumination – twice as much as previous models, according to Govee. In practice, this creates a soft, atmospheric halo effect that noticeably changes the feeling of the room even without active RGB effects. The combination of direct ceiling light and indirect wall lighting works shockingly well, even as everyday lighting without any color gimmicks.
The real unique technical feature is behind the diffuser: 616 individually controllable LEDs in a matrix layout that Govee deliberately based on a screen design. Instead of concentric circles, as with practically every other smart ceiling light, a rectangular grid is used. This sounds like a minor technical design decision, but it has a major impact: Images, animations and patterns are displayed with significantly less distortion because the grid does not create any optical offset between the pixels. With less than 2 cm between every two pixels and a density of 1 IC per 3.65 cm², this is the highest LED density in this product category, according to the company. In addition, there are 12 ICs for individual control and an internal microphone for music response, so that no external device is required.
The color spectrum is RGBICWW. This means that the luminaire is capable of full RGB for effects as well as dedicated warm white and cool white LEDs for clean everyday light. This combination is crucial: many RGB luminaires provide poor white light because they mix white from the color LEDs. This is not the case here.
What’s annoying: Installation requires drilling. There is no optional click system, no adapter for existing ceiling roses without drilling. The weight makes this a two-person task.

App connection and setting up the Ceiling Light Ultra
The Govee Home app is the central control point and the setup itself is immediately familiar to anyone who already owns a Govee product. For newcomers, the app guides you well through the setup process of the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra, as long as the network conditions are right. A 2.4 GHz WLAN is mandatory – 5 GHz is not supported, which seems like a relic in 2026, but is unfortunately the standard for Govee devices. In densely populated apartment buildings, where the 2.4 GHz band is overcrowded, this can lead to occasional disconnections.
The app itself is clearly structured. 100 pre-installed scenes cover everything from calm warm white lighting to animated nature scenes and abstract art effects. Everything can be called up with a single tap. If you don’t want to design your own, you’ll find a suitable preset for every occasion.
The AI Lighting Bot 2.0 is particularly powerful: if you enter a text prompt, such as “romantic atmosphere for dinner” or “energetic club vibe”, a generated GIF animation is projected onto the ceiling within a few seconds. This works surprisingly well and makes the luminaire accessible to users who don’t feel like doing things manually. The AI also understands emotional or abstract inputs and translates them into lighting scenes that match the described context.
For the creative types, there is the DIY mode: pixel-level editing with up to 8 animation levels for 3D effects, gradient tools, image import via image recognition and a finger sketch function with which light patterns can be drawn directly on the smartphone display and then transferred to the ceiling. If you invest the time, you can create your own animated light images. This is not a gimmick, this is a fully-fledged creative environment in which you can let off steam for hours.
The DaySync system is one of the most practical features for everyday use. The light automatically adjusts brightness, color and color temperature to the time and configurable scenarios: Cool, bright light for waking up in the morning, neutral working light during the day, warm dimmed light in the evening. For example, a “not at home” scenario can be set up that starts at 6:15 a.m. with warm yellow light at 30% brightness, switches off automatically at 9:00 a.m. and switches back on at 6:00 p.m. with neutral white light at 70% brightness. Once you have configured this, you will hardly ever need to use the app in everyday life.
On the smart home side, Govee is fully equipped: Matter, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings are supported. Matter ensures local control without cloud dependency. A real advantage over many competing products that take a detour via Govee’s server for every action. Voice control via Alexa or Google Assistant works reliably for standard commands: Switching on and off, adjusting brightness, activating scenes.
Govee Ceiling Light Ultra in the practical test
After intensive daily use, it becomes clear how the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra really works, in which situations it is convincing and where it reaches its limits. Perhaps the most important thing first: the Ceiling Light Ultra functions as a real main light source. With 5000 lumens at 6500K, it is bright enough to fully illuminate a room of up to 30 square meters. The CRI value of 95 at 2700K means that colors in warm light appear almost deceptively real. By comparison, at 6500K the CRI is 80, which is still solid, but noticeably less natural than the warm white.
For reading areas, workspaces or kitchens, the combination of a neutral white tone around 4000K and high brightness is therefore recommended – the luminaire delivers this without any problems. Thanks to the dedicated RGBICWW LEDs, there is no flickering, no unpleasant color cast problem, which is typical of pure RGB luminaires with mixed white.
The 100 pre-installed scenes are the quickest way to transform the ceiling and bathe it in either white or colored light. The range of effects for the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is already familiar from other luminaires from the manufacturer and these can of course be synchronized across the entire Govee ecosystem.
From calm nature animations (flowing water, clouds, starry skies) to stylized art effects and pulsating club scenes, everything is included. Thanks to the matrix layout, the figurative effects in particular, i.e. those with recognizable shapes or motion sequences, appear much sharper and smoother than with comparable ceiling lights. Animations are not jerky and transitions are smooth. Once you have scrolled through the scenes, you will quickly find two or three favorites for regular operation. One point of criticism: there is no preview function in the app. You first have to activate each scene to see what it actually looks like.
If you want to go deeper, you will find a fully-fledged creative environment in DIY mode. The pixel canvas shows the 616 LEDs as an editable matrix. Individual pixels can be colored, animated and superimposed on up to 8 layers. For 3D-like depth effects. The finger sketch function allows you to draw directly on the smartphone touchscreen, which is then transferred to the ceiling in real time. And yes, your offspring will definitely have a lot of fun with it. But I have to say… I also played around with it for much longer than I initially thought.
The DIY effects are particularly suitable for spontaneous messages – a quickly drawn heart or lettering on the ceiling definitely has the wow factor. The image import via image recognition also works. Simple, high-contrast motifs are transferred much better than photorealistic images.
The backlight-only mode of the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is underestimated and little advertised. Using the backlight alone as a night light or ambient lighting is one of the most pleasant modes for me. The generous illumination creates a soft, indirect light that doesn’t flood a room but provides enough orientation light. Set to warm and dimmed to low brightness, this is the perfect bedroom mode just before falling asleep. Very pleasant.
As is typical for Govee, the Ceiling Light Ultra is extremely reliable. Once set up, the ceiling light is simply always ready to go. During my test, there were no connection interruptions or failures, no hitches and no problems. This is how smart lighting should work.
Govee Ceiling Light Ultra Review: Conclusion
The Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is the most ambitious product that the manufacturer has ever released in the ceiling light category and it clearly shows where smart lighting is heading. 616 individually controllable LEDs in a matrix layout, 5000 lumens maximum brightness, CRI 95 at 2700K, AI-generated lighting effects, full Matter support, a two-stage backlight system with 30 cm wall illumination and an internal microphone for music mode: on paper, this is an all-round package that leaves nothing to be desired – and in practice, the luminaire delivers what it promises.
The lighting effects are sharper and more fluid than anything I have ever seen in this category. The matrix layout makes all the difference: animations look like animations, not like blurry blobs of color. The AI Lighting Bot 2.0 is not a gimmick, but a useful feature. DaySync makes the light convenient in everyday life without having to constantly reach for the app.
However, the price of 249.99 euros is undoubtedly an announcement. But it is reasonable for what the Ceiling Light Ultra can do. Anyone looking for a ceiling light that transforms into an art object at the touch of a button, functions as a fully-fledged main light source, seamlessly integrates the smart home and offers creative freedom on a completely new level will find a device with no real direct competitor on the market. Deductions are made for the complex installation with mandatory drilling, the lack of 5 GHz WLAN, the learning curve in the app and the high starting price. If you can live with that, the Govee Ceiling Light Ultra is currently the most creative ceiling light on the market.
