Govee Floor Lamp 3 test: scope of delivery, design and workmanship

I rely on products from Govee for my smart lighting because I am absolutely convinced of the handling and quality of the manufacturer’s lights. I recently revealed why this is the case in my everyday test. With the Govee Floor Lamp 3, the first two generations of the smart floor lamp are finally getting an upgrade. This means that all three generations are currently here in my office.

Govee Floor Lamp 3
The scope of delivery of the Govee Floor Lamp 3

When you unpack the Govee Floor Lamp 3, you immediately notice that Govee doesn’t do things by halves here. The box is neatly structured and the individual segments of the floor lamp are well protected in foam inserts. In addition to the lamp segments, the scope of delivery also includes a remote control, the power supply unit and a printed quick start guide. The design of the Floor Lamp 3 immediately catches the eye, even when it is switched off. Govee has deliberately opted for a minimalist concept here: The housing is made of aluminum alloy, which gives the lamp a noticeably high-quality feel.

No cheap plastic feel, no wobbling. The surface is matt black and fingerprint-resistant enough not to look stained immediately in everyday use. With a height of 152.15 cm (approx. 59.9 inches), it fits easily into normal living spaces without being obtrusive. What’s more, the workmanship is noticeably higher quality than that of the Floor Lamp 2, particularly in terms of the metal rod, but also with regard to the metal connections between the three elements. The light can be installed quickly and in just a few simple steps.

Govee Floor Lamp 3
New holder for the remote control

Also worth mentioning: as with its predecessor, the remote control can be attached to the floor lamp using a clip. However, the new holder for the floor lamp is docked right at the top of the light and no longer “anywhere it fits”. This creates a cleaner look. A small detail, but a successful one.

The Floor Lamp 3 really comes into its own when switched on: the double-sided skyline lighting emits light both forwards and backwards, creating a much more immersive effect than single-sided designs. The beam angle of the main light has been extended to 170 degrees. If you place the lamp close to a wall, you can see the result immediately: a soft, uniform carpet of light that – according to the manufacturer – spreads over an area of up to 7.6 m². Compared to the previous generation, this is a 30 percent increase in the wall-washing area.

One detail that stands out positively in everyday use is the lamp base. Govee has equipped it with a double ring light: both a ring on the upper edge and one on the lower edge of the base light up. This sounds like a gimmick, but in practice it looks surprisingly elegant: in a darkened room, the illuminated base creates a kind of floor ambience that complements the main illumination without appearing too overloaded. The lamp contains a total of 288 LEDs in the main light (144 RGB and 144 WW each), plus a further 24 RGB and 24 WW in the base ring lighting and 30 RGB and 30 WW on the lower edge of the base.

One small point of criticism: the Floor Lamp 3 is currently only available in black. Anyone with a light-colored interior or who prefers a white floor lamp will unfortunately be left out in the cold. Competitor models and even the cheaper Govee Lantern Floor Lamp offer color options in black and white. This is a missed opportunity for a product costing 169.99 euros.

Floor Lamp 3 vs. Floor Lamp 2

Anyone who already owns or has owned the Govee Floor Lamp 2 (€ 135.99 *) is right to wonder whether the extra charge for the Floor Lamp 3 is justified. The short answer: yes, but not just because of the price difference, but because of a fundamental technological leap.

The key difference lies in the new LuminBlend+ technology. While Floor Lamp 2 still relied on RGBICWW technology with 1 luminous bead per IC, Floor Lamp 3 works with RGBWWIC and 3 luminous beads per IC. This sounds dry, but has a noticeable effect on the lighting result: the color transitions of the Floor Lamp 3 are noticeably smoother and softer, the banding effect occasionally seen with older LED floor lamps has practically disappeared here. The fact that Govee also uses a 16-bit chip and proprietary gamma calibration ensures that colors are reproduced cleanly and correctly even at 1 percent brightness.

Even more technically relevant is the extended white light color temperature range. The Floor Lamp 2 offered a solid range in the medium to warm segment. Floor Lamp 3, on the other hand, now ranges from 1,000 K to 10,000 K. This is the widest color temperature range that Govee has ever installed in a floor lamp and, according to Govee, an industry leader among floor lamps. In practical terms, this means that anything is possible, from a deep, almost candle-like orange tone at the lower end to a clear, bluish-white daylight at the upper end. For desk work, movie nights or bedtime routines: the range is so wide that there is hardly a situation in which the lamp cannot provide the right light color.

In terms of luminous flux, both generations are at a similar level with 2,100 lumens at 6,500 K. The difference is therefore less in the raw brightness than in the quality of the light. Govee has also made improvements in terms of smart home connectivity: The Floor Lamp 3 now also supports SmartThings, which the Floor Lamp 2 did not yet offer in this form. Anyone operating a Samsung smart home system will benefit directly here. To summarize: The Floor Lamp 2 remains a good product, but the Floor Lamp 3 is a clear step up in all relevant light quality dimensions. Anyone who sees the two in direct comparison will hardly want the older generation back.

App connection and setup

The Govee Floor Lamp 3 is set up via the Govee Home app, which is available for iOS and Android. The process is relatively simple: plug in the lamp, open the app, add the device and enter the Wi-Fi access data. The connection is made via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so the device is not exclusively cloud-dependent. When you open the app for the first time, you are confronted with a wealth of options that can seem overwhelming at first. The user interface is not the most intuitive on the market, but after a few hours of use you will find your way around.

The most important areas: Color, Scene, Illumination, AI and Music. The Scene section provides access to the LuminBlend+ colors, including recommended effects such as “Sunrise at Sea”, “Sunset Glow” and “Ukiyoe Colors”. These effects are visually appealing and show what LuminBlend+ is really capable of. The soft pastel shades in particular are in a class of their own and much more organic than the previous generation.

The DaySync function is particularly practical. The lamp retrieves the local sunrise and sunset and automatically adjusts the brightness and color temperature to the rhythm of the day. Cooler white light to wake you up in the morning, neutral tones for focus in the afternoon, warm light for relaxation in the evening – it sounds like a marketing promise, but works surprisingly well in practice. If you don’t like the default settings, you can create your own time nodes via “Custom Plan” and assign a specific color, brightness and lighting effect to each time slot.

There is also the AI Lighting Bot 2.0, an AI function that understands text input and converts it into lighting effects. So you can type “Give me a calm ocean atmosphere” into the app and the lamp will do the same. Voice commands via microphone are also possible. This doesn’t always work perfectly, but it’s an interesting feature that shows where smart lighting is heading. Several rounds of conversation are possible, which makes the AI character a little more tangible.

With the Floor Lamp 3, Govee supports Matter, Alexa, Google Assistant and now also SmartThings. Matter is particularly valuable for anyone who wants to control their smart home devices across platforms – compatibility has never been wider. Anyone who uses Razer Chroma or Homey is also covered. The Govee app also offers DreamView (several devices synchronized in one scene), Music Mode (light reacts to music via microphone), a timer and DIY lighting effects.

Govee Floor Lamp 3

On a critical note, the app occasionally reacts slowly when managing many Govee devices at the same time. This is not a Floor Lamp 3-specific problem, but a known app problem in the Govee ecosystem. If you only use the Floor Lamp 3, you will hardly notice this.

Practical test of the Govee Floor Lamp 3

Set up in the living room, right next to a light or dark wall, the Govee Floor Lamp 3 really comes into its own. The 170-degree beam angle and the double-sided skyline lighting create a wall-washing effect that extends much more evenly and deeper into the room than comparable models. Up to 58 m² wall-washing area at 2,100 lumens: this sounds like a measurement for engineers, but it makes all the difference in everyday life: even larger living spaces are pleasantly and evenly illuminated without the lamp having to be positioned in the middle.

The quality of light is the real showpiece of Floor Lamp 3. LuminBlend+ delivers what Govee promises: pastel shades that used to appear slightly washed out or unnatural are now precise and pleasing to the eye. The transition between colors is smooth, without visible steps. Especially in scene mode (such as “Meadow Breeze” or “Water Lilies”), you can see how far the technology has come since the first Govee floor lamp in 2021. Anyone who sees these effects immediately understands why Govee relies so heavily on LuminBlend+.

The white light mode from 1,000 K to 10,000 K is extremely practical in everyday life. In the morning, I set the lamp to 6,500 K or higher – that wakes you up without needing the ceiling light. In the evening, the color temperature moves to 2,000 to 2,700 K, which creates a much more relaxed atmosphere than cold LED light. At 1 percent brightness, the color remains stable. This is a real improvement over cheaper models, which appear unsettled or color-distorted at low dimming levels.

The illuminated base is a real eye-catcher in everyday life. In a darkened room, the lamp literally floats above the floor thanks to the dual-ring base. This is aesthetically pleasing and clearly sets the Floor Lamp 3 apart from the Floor Lamp 3 Lite (129.99 euros), which does not have this feature.
One point of criticism in the practical test: At 48 watts, the lamp consumes twice as much as many competitor models (e.g. Govee Lantern Floor Lamp with 24 W). This is not a deal-breaker, but anyone who uses the lamp for many hours a day should bear this in mind. In addition, the black version is not always the first choice in bright rooms – a white version, as offered by the Lantern Floor Lamp, would be desirable here.

Govee Floor Lamp 3

The remote control works reliably and covers the most important functions, but is not a fully-fledged app replacement – if you want to use LuminBlend+ colors or DaySync, you can’t avoid the app.

Govee Floor Lamp 3 Review: Conclusion

The Govee Floor Lamp 3 is the most technically powerful floor lamp that Govee has ever built. LuminBlend+ is not just a marketing feature: color precision, dimming stability and white light quality have noticeably improved compared to the previous generation. The color temperature range of 1,000 K to 10,000 K, the double-sided skyline illumination and the illuminated double-ring base clearly set the lamp apart from cheaper alternatives.

The EUR 169.99 is a fair price – even if the higher power consumption (48 W) and the lack of a white color version are a downer. For anyone looking for smart ambient lighting at a high level, the Floor Lamp 3 is currently one of the best options in the segment.
