The manufacturer has designed a sort of all-in-one device that can detect thermal bridges and help with moisture-related issues. At the same time, this portable device is packed with cutting-edge technology. But when is it worth buying, and what features does the HIKMICRO D02 actually offer?

What’s Included with the HIKMICRO D02

The overall package for the thermal imaging camera is modest, but we didn’t really expect much more. Aside from the HIKMICRO D02, the package only includes a charging cable and a Quick Starter Guide in 22 languages. The compact package is rounded out by a receipt and a warranty card.

Unfortunately, the user manual for the HIKMICRO D02 thermal imaging camera is missing. Only a QR code in the Quick Starter Guide links to the corresponding PDF. A physical copy might have been helpful, but downloading it to a smartphone or computer worked right away. The guide also explains all the features and capabilities in detail, complete with illustrations.

HIKMICRO D02 Review: Build Quality & Design

The quality of the thermal camera’s outer casing is absolutely satisfactory. The plastic casing feels pleasant to the touch, and weighing 235 grams, the HIKMICRO D02 sits really comfortably in the hand. If you’re looking for something even more compact, you should check out the HIKMICRO Mini.

The color scheme also catches the eye right away—the mix of black and red is visually appealing, and anyone who wants their thermal imaging camera to look good in their toolbox should be satisfied.

The same goes for the four buttons located directly below the screen. These buttons not only turn the device on and off but also allow you to navigate through all menus and functions via the red-highlighted buttons. Since the buttons themselves are made of rubber, they can be used without any problems even with dirty or wet hands and can be cleaned quickly as well.

The large button on the back, on the other hand, is made of plastic and can be pressed perfectly with your index finger as soon as you hold the device in your hand. Another plus is the tripod mount, which is located directly below the lens. So if you have a compatible UNC ¼”–20 tripod, you can take advantage of this feature.

In addition, a strap has been attached to the underside through which you can thread your wrist. This practical safety feature is especially useful for tradespeople who need to switch quickly between taking photos and performing manual tasks.

HIKMICRO D02 Features Put to the Test

The manufacturer promises that the thermal imaging camera not only offers a wide range of “classic” recording options but is also equipped with smart and modern features. We’ll take a look at the most important features and reveal in our HIKMICRO D02 review how well they’ve actually been implemented.

Smart SuperScene: Automatic Detection Thanks to AI Technology

The SuperScene technology, developed specifically for the new HIKMICRO thermal imaging camera models, utilizes artificial intelligence (AI). Using the so-called deep learning method, the internal software automatically detects problems during operation.

To do this, simply point the thermal imaging camera at the desired area and activate the Smart SuperScene feature. This feature then helps identify insulation issues or locate water leaks, immediately highlighting the problematic areas with a warning. To do this, a red frame is drawn around the corresponding area on the display (see images below). This offers the major advantage of making it much easier to interpret the captured images and identify problem areas. Even without prior technical knowledge, problem zones can be identified this way.

In our test, this actually worked quite well. Although no serious problems were found, areas that were unexpectedly warm or cold were detected and marked by the AI. Ultimately, however, interpreting these markings is still up to the user.

Temperature Measurement

Our HIKMICRO D02 test shows that this feature also works intuitively. As soon as the thermal imaging camera is activated, it automatically measures temperatures within the field of view. The screen displays the highest, lowest, and central temperatures.

In plain language, this means that the software automatically detects and marks the hottest and coldest points in the measurement area. In our experience, no extensive technical knowledge is required to interpret these results. The color scheme in particular—blue for cold areas, red, orange, and yellow for warm areas—makes it immediately clear how to interpret the images.

Depending on what is being measured, a problem can thus be identified quickly. So anyone looking for defects in the insulation will be able to find the corresponding issues here without any trouble. This feature is also ideal for inspecting heating pipes, underfloor heating, or other areas of the home.

Alarms and Warnings

Especially when conducting a targeted search, the ability to activate an alarm and customize it to your preferences is extremely helpful. As soon as the measured temperature exceeds or falls below the set threshold, an alarm can be triggered.

This allows you to quickly inspect even larger areas, especially in combination with the wide 50° field of view. The HIKMICRO D02 really shines here, particularly when combined with the AI function and SuperIR resolution optimization, which uses a software solution to scale the resolution from 96 x 96 pixels to 240 x 240 pixels.

Internal Storage: 4 GB of storage space

According to the manufacturer, the generous 4 GB of internal storage allows for up to 30,000 images to be saved. For those recording videos, there’s enough storage for up to 10 hours of footage. That should be more than enough for most applications. The only downside is that the storage cannot be expanded.

Data is easily transferred to a laptop or PC. In our test, we simply connected the HIKMICRO D02 to a desktop via USB-C, and the images were immediately copied to a hard drive.

However, anyone hoping for a connection via an app will be disappointed with this model. There’s also no Bluetooth connection, though this didn’t stand out as a negative in our test.

HIKMICRO D02 in a Real-World Test: Camera Quality & User-Friendliness

In our hands-on test, it quickly became clear that the various features and capabilities are intuitive to use. You can simply turn on the thermal imaging camera and get started right away. Only those who really want to get the most out of the device should take ten minutes to explore the various menus and adjust the settings as needed.

The camera quality is consistently impressive, not least thanks to the SuperIR resolution, which automatically upscales the image and delivers even better results. Anyone looking to inspect pipes, wall surfaces, corners, or radiators will be able to immediately identify and examine all key areas.

If you want to work with even greater precision, be sure to activate the laser pointer. This displays a red dot in the center of the screen, making it even easier to target specific areas.

We award another plus point for the IP54 protection rating. This means the device is protected against both dust and light splashes of water. If necessary, the HIKMICRO D02 thermal imaging camera can therefore be used even in light rain or on a dusty construction site.

HIKMICRO D02 Review: Our Conclusion

In terms of price, the HIKMICRO D02 appears to have been designed as an entry-level model. However, given its many customization options and AI support, even professional tradespeople are likely to benefit from this model’s capabilities. It’s clear that the interface is truly intuitive, allowing even less tech-savvy users to get started right away.

There’s really nothing to criticize at this price point, especially since the screen has been further improved compared to the HIKMICRO E01. If you want to nitpick, you might wish for app integration, a Bluetooth connection, or the ability to expand the internal storage via a microSD card. That said, for home use, the HIKMICRO D02 offers everything a DIY enthusiast could hope for. Highly recommended!
