Hollyland VenusLiv Air test: design and workmanship

The Hollyland VenusLiv Air is much more than “just” a large webcam alternative, as the streaming camera makes unmistakably clear at first glance. The housing comes in a compact, angular form factor with a matt black surface, which has a high-quality appearance and attracts fingerprints only slightly. With dimensions of approx. 134 × 97 × 101 mm and a weight of around 660 grams, the camera is handy enough for mobile setups, but looks solid and not cheap. The build quality is clearly above what we are used to in the webcam segment. Here you can tell that Hollyland builds real camera hardware.

On the back is a 3-inch flip touchscreen that can be flipped upwards or sideways by 180° – ideal for solo creators who want to keep an eye on themselves while streaming. There is also an impressive collection of connections at the back: HDMI 2.0, two USB-C ports, a 3.5 mm jack input, the power connection and an RJ45 Ethernet port for wired connections.

At the top is a cold shoe mount for accessories and a rubberized SD card slot. The camera also has two 1/4″ threads so that it can be mounted in both landscape and portrait format.

One detail that is particularly important in continuous operation: Hollyland has equipped the VenusLiv Air with an active cooling system with integrated cooling fins, which should enable 24/7 streaming without the risk of overheating. That’s not a marketing promise, it sounds good. Even after hours of streaming, the camera remains warm to the touch, but never gets critically hot.

Equipment and features

The heart of the VenusLiv Air is a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with 50 megapixels, which, in combination with a specially developed F1.05 wide-angle lens (25 mm equivalent), ensures 4K UHD recordings at 30 fps. At first glance, this is not a larger sensor than in modern webcams (the OBSBOT Tiny 3, for example, uses 1/1.28 inch), but in practice you can clearly see the difference.

The scope of delivery of the Hollyland VenusLiv Air

This combination not only delivers sharp images, but also a natural background blur. A feature that clearly sets Hollyland’s flagship camera apart from ordinary webcams. In addition, there is a hybrid autofocus system (phase and contrast detection) with continuous focus and up to 4x digital zoom.

In terms of connectivity, the VenusLiv Air is remarkably versatile. It supports USB 3.0 UVC streaming (plug-and-play without capture card), HDMI 2.0 output up to 1080p60, RTMP/SRT streaming for platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, Facebook or custom servers, as well as simultaneous streaming to two platforms at the same time. All without a PC. Dual-band WLAN (2.4 & 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.0 and Ethernet round off the network package.

The built-in toolset for Live Creator is particularly impressive: green screen/chroma key function, image overlay, skin beauty filters, color correction functions and up to 20 storable scene presets are available directly in the camera. Anyone who streams regularly knows how valuable this is: a saved preset means you can set up your look once and call it up with a tap instead of having to set it up again each time. For the audio connection, there is a dedicated USB-C digital input, a 3.5 mm analog input and native support for Hollywood’s LARK microphone series.

Commissioning and software

Getting started with the VenusLiv Air is surprisingly straightforward. A USB-C 3.0 cable is all you need for PC streaming – the camera registers as a UVC device and works immediately with OBS, Streamlabs, Microsoft Teams, Zoom or similar applications without the need for drivers or a capture card. This is a considerable convenience advantage in everyday use. For standalone streaming without a PC, you connect to the Hollyland ecosystem via QR code and can then go live with a single tap.

Hollyland offers two software solutions for advanced control: The VenusCam app for iOS and Android allows real-time monitoring, recording control, focus and zoom adjustments as well as color tuning directly from the smartphone.

The HollyStudio PC software adds green screen functions, image overlays, skin beauty, color correction tools and full camera control on the desktop. Both applications are intuitively designed, even if the PC software requires some training when first setting up. The 3-inch flip touchscreen on the back also allows direct adjustment of focus, color and other image parameters on the device itself.

A real plus point: the camera can be easily integrated into existing Hollyland setups. Anyone already working with the LARK M2 or LARK Max 2 can integrate the microphones directly via USB-C or 3.5 mm jack and thus immediately have a complete audio-video solution from a single source. A minor drawback is that the initial setup via the app occasionally requires a little more patience if Wi-Fi connections are not stable straight away – a stable 5 GHz network has a clear advantage here.

Image quality of the Hollyland VenusLiv Air

In practice, the 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor delivers what Hollyland promises: sharp, noise-free 4K images with natural color reproduction that is well above the level of classic webcams. The open F1.05 aperture provides a real and quite impressive background blur that instantly gives streams and videos a professional look without the need to invest in expensive camera technology.

Especially in difficult lighting situations, such as in a poorly lit home studio or backlit conditions, the VenusLiv Air beats most of its competitors in this price range.

The AI tuning system, which Hollyland has integrated into the camera as AE (Auto Exposure) and AWB (Auto White Balance), works very reliably in everyday use. It analyzes the lighting conditions in real time and continuously adjusts exposure and white balance without manual intervention. This is complemented by Hollyland’s proprietary color restoration algorithm, which is based on a database of tens of thousands of real streaming scenes and ensures true-to-life colors in a wide variety of environments. If you still prefer to intervene manually, you can of course adjust all parameters either via the touchscreen or the app itself.

More Information

The only notable point of criticism in terms of picture quality is that the HDMI output is limited to 1080p60. If you need 4K output to a switcher or monitor, you have to switch to USB 3.0 (UVC, up to 4K30).

The Hollyland VenusLiv Air cannot produce audio internally. The quality therefore depends on the connected peripherals. Various microphones can be connected via the dedicated USB-C input or the 3.5 mm jack input, which of course have a decisive influence on the sound.

Hollyland VenusLiv Air Review: Conclusion

The Hollyland VenusLiv Air is one of the most convincing streaming cameras I’ve ever used. It is clearly aimed at creators who want to go beyond the webcam level without investing in a complete broadcast setup. The combination of a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, F1.05 optics and AI-supported tuning delivers results that immediately show up in the stream in more professional image quality.

The feature set for independent live production is particularly strong: dual-platform streaming without a PC, up to 20 scene presets, integrated green screen and overlay functions as well as the active cooling system for 24/7 operation make the VenusLiv Air a real all-rounder for streamers, podcasters and business creators.

However, the price is by no means a bargain and requires a clear commitment: this camera is for creators for whom streaming is not a sideline, but an integral part of their workflow. If you only stream occasionally or primarily make video calls, a webcam is good enough. However, if you are looking for a reliable, stand-alone streaming camera with real 4K, AI power and a professional range of features, the VenusLiv Air is currently one of the most exciting options on the market.
