Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 review: design and workmanship

Even at first glance, the Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 makes it clear that it is no ordinary smartwatch. Its massive, almost martial design is more reminiscent of professional diving watches than elegant everyday companions. With a diameter of 48.5 millimetres and a case thickness of around 13 millimetres, it is a real eye-catcher. Or rather: a statement on the wrist.

The case is made of a particularly robust amorphous zirconium alloy which, according to Huawei, is harder and more corrosion-resistant than titanium or stainless steel. This material, which is otherwise only used in aviation or high-performance technology, gives the watch impressive stability with an elegant finish.

However, the bulky dimensions also come at the expense of weight. The Watch Ultimate 2 weighs around 81 grams, which is another 30 grams more than the Watch GT6. Nevertheless, the watch is quite comfortable to wear, but is undoubtedly made for larger wrists. The weight is well balanced and the ergonomic curvature of the case back ensures a stable fit, even when in motion.

The front is protected by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, which merges seamlessly with the ceramic bezel. This combination not only ensures a luxurious look, but also reliably protects the watch from scratches and knocks, even during demanding outdoor activities or diving. On the back, Huawei uses nanocrystal ceramic, which is pleasantly skin-friendly and resistant to sweat and salt water.

In addition to the pre-installed strap made of fluoroelastomer rubber (ideal for sports and water activities), our blue and white test model also comes with a longer version and a high-quality metal strap for a more elegant look.

In terms of robustness, the watch is hard to beat: it is certified to the 20 ATM, IP68 and IP69 standards, which not only protects it from dust and water, but also enables dives to a depth of 200 meters. Even with temperature changes, pressure differences or salt water environments, the workmanship remains impeccable. Anyone looking for a watch that is both a luxury object and a technical tool will find what they are looking for here.

Display and operation

The display of the Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 is without doubt one of the best on the smartwatch market. The 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED panel has a razor-sharp resolution of 466 × 466 pixels and achieves a peak brightness of up to 3,500 nits. This makes it another 500 nits brighter than its counterpart on the Huawei Watch 5 (our test), which allows for excellent readability in direct sunlight.

The adaptive refresh rate also ensures energy efficiency by dynamically switching between 1 and 60 hertz – smooth during animations and economical in standby mode. The brilliant color reproduction is very pleasing. Black levels are absolutely deep and the contrast is among the best currently available in a smartwatch. The touch recognition also reacts precisely and reliably, whether with wet fingers, gloves or under water.

When it comes to operation, Huawei combines several input methods into a well thought-out overall system. The rotating crown on the right-hand side allows haptically pleasant navigation through menus, while two additional function keys offer individual quick access to training modes or diving functions.

Already familiar from the Watch 5 is the so-called X-Tap sensor: a surface integrated on the side that can be used to activate health data such as pulse, ECG or stress level by simply placing a finger on it.

There is also a gesture control that reacts to finger taps: If you double-press your thumb and index finger together, you can answer calls or confirm actions. This is particularly practical when your hands are wet or you are wearing gloves.

Features and sensors

When it comes to functionality, no other manufacturer can beat Huawei’s smartwatches. Accordingly, the Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 also plays in the absolute top class. It is far more than just a classic smartwatch and offers a range of features that is truly impressive.

The special dive mode is probably the most exciting new feature. This allows you to dive down to a depth of 150 meters and displays data such as depth, ascent speed, water temperature and pressure in real time. Particularly innovative: a sonar communication system allows you to exchange simple messages or emojis with other Ultimate 2 wearers underwater. A feature that is currently unique. How useful the whole thing is, however, remains to be seen. I find it very niche, as it only appeals to divers and only works if everyone is using the Watch Ultimate 2.

The watch is also well equipped on land. It has precise dual-band GPS (L1 + L5) with support for all major satellite systems, allowing hiking or cycling routes to be reliably recorded even in difficult environments. A barometric altimeter, compass and depth sensor are also integrated. As a modern high-end smartwatch, it is equipped with an eSIM and cellular option, supports Wi-Fi 6, fast Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC for contactless payment

The health functions are comprehensive and state of the art. Huawei combines several sensors to create a complex monitoring system:

  • Optical pulse sensor of the latest TruSeen 6.0 generation
  • ECG measurement for heart rhythm analysis
  • Blood oxygen measurement (SpO₂)
  • Skin temperature measurement
  • Stress and sleep tracking (incl. REM phase analysis)
  • HRV evaluation to detect stress or exhaustion
  • Body temperature and respiratory rate

The X-Tap sensor can be used to start a complete vital signs analysis at the tap of a finger. A feature that is particularly practical for short check-ins in everyday life. In my comparison, all measured values are very accurate. The heart rate and calorie consumption values are exactly the same as those of the devices in my gym, especially when it comes to training detection.

For athletes, the watch offers over 100 training modes, from running to skiing to golf, including precise performance data such as VO2max or training load. Those who enjoy being outdoors will benefit from the navigation and map functions, which can also be used offline. In “Expedition mode”, routes, elevation profiles and waypoints are displayed in great detail – ideal for longer tours away from civilization.

Once again, however, the app selection remains a drawback: The AppGallery expands the range of functions, but lags far behind Apple or Google due to political restrictions. The Watch Ultimate 2 lacks many functions, especially in conjunction with an iPhone. Unfortunately, this is and remains a tiresome issue.

Battery life: A little meagre – by Huawei standards

When it comes to the battery life of the Huawei Watch Ultimate 2, the manufacturer differentiates between whether the smartwatch is paired with an Android device or an iPhone. In the Google ecosystem, it is said to last up to 4.5 days, whereas under Apple it is only 3.5 days (despite a smaller range of functions). Why is that? I have no idea.

However, this only applies when Always-on-Display is deactivated. With AOD, you can subtract another day from the battery life. And that’s pretty meager by Huawei standards. Especially when you consider that the Watch GT6 lasts up to 14 days here.

In intensive sports use, such as GPS-supported outdoor training or diving, the battery life is around two to two and a half days. The fast wireless charging is particularly positive: The battery is fully charged in around one hour.

In comparison, the battery life is roughly on a par with the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and is therefore still at a good level. However, if you are looking for a more enduring companion, you will probably have to reach for the Watch GT series.

Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 Review: Conclusion

Is the Huawei Watch Ultimate 2, on paper, the best smartwatch the manufacturer has ever built? I can clearly answer “yes” here. But is it also the smartwatch that I would recommend to anyone without hesitation? A very clear “no” to that.

The heavy weight and enormous size disqualify it for users with smaller wrists, while the real unique selling points in the form of sonar communication are incredibly niche and only of interest to divers. The price of 999 euros (RRP) is also undoubtedly a bit steep, while I personally find the battery life too meagre.

In my opinion, a Watch GT6 (Pro) or Watch 5 offer a much more well-rounded and attractively priced overall package.

But that doesn’t mean that the Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 is bad. Quite the opposite. It is, without a doubt, the best wearable that the manufacturer has ever built and one of the best smartwatches currently available.

It combines the finest materials with state-of-the-art sensor technology and sets standards in terms of robustness and submersibility. The bright, high-contrast display, intuitive operation and wealth of sensors make it a serious tool for sports, health and expeditions.
