So the real question in this test wasn’t whether water would come out in the end. It was whether this “little” water station could clear half the array of gadgets that usually clutter the countertop: a filter pitcher, a carbonator, a kettle, and a bottle rack.

First impression: The Hydrofast C300 takes up some space
Unbox it, set it down, and the first impression is: big. Measuring 45 × 27 × 44.5 cm and weighing just under 13 kg, the C300 takes up noticeably more space than a coffee maker and is heavy enough that once you set it down, it stays right where it is. It’s well-built: no sharp edges, no sloppy gaps. The slim, tall design is clever—a carafe or a tall glass fits under the spout without having to tilt it.

A minor downside to mention up front, so you won’t be disappointed after unboxing: A CO₂ cylinder is not included. Setup: Plug-and-play, but not done in five minutes
The biggest practical advantage becomes apparent even before you pour your first glass: The C300 doesn’t need a permanent water connection. No need to tap into a pipe, replace a faucet, or drill any holes. Plug it in, fill the tank, insert the filter, rinse, prepare the CO₂—done.
Still, it’s not quite as simple as using a basic soda maker: the filters and tanks need to be prepared, and the system needs to be flushed once so it doesn’t start producing drinking water right away with the first sip. Anyone familiar with these kinds of devices can do this in their sleep; anyone who’s only used kettles and SodaStream so far should take a few minutes to read the instructions. The fact that the C300 doesn’t require a permanent water connection is worth its weight in gold, especially in rental apartments. The trade-off is straightforward: the raw water tank needs to be refilled regularly—more on that later.
Filtration and Water Quality: What Can Really Be Assessed in a Test?
When it comes to filtration, testers must remain honest. Without laboratory analysis, it’s impossible to reliably determine which substances are removed from the water and in what quantities. Hydrofast advertises a 6-stage system consisting of a sediment filter, activated carbon, RO membrane, post-filter, mineralization, and UV sterilization—according to the manufacturer, this ensures that fine particles, heavy metals, and medication residues end up in the wastewater instead of in your glass. Technically, this is in a different league than a filter pitcher, but it’s simply a manufacturer’s claim that I can’t verify.
What I can evaluate are usability, the display, taste, and everyday performance. The TDS display is helpful because it provides a verifiable value for dissolved solids in both raw and purified water—it’s not a full analysis, but it’s a good indication that the device actually distinguishes between unfiltered and filtered water. And there’s a difference in taste: I actually find the filtered water tastes better and more pleasant than our tap water—but that’s purely a matter of taste. How big the difference is for you depends on your region—it’s more noticeable with hard tap water than in places where the water comes out of the tap neutral to begin with. Hydrofast lists the pH level as around 7, which fits with the mild impression it gives.
Water Self-Test: TDS Meter and Test Strips
I can’t replace a lab analysis in this test—as I mentioned above. Still, I didn’t want to just write “tastes better”; I wanted to provide verifiable numbers. So I got a simple TDS meter and a 16-in-1 test strip set and compared tap water directly with the filtered water from the C300.
A quick note on context: A TDS meter displays the total dissolved solids in ppm. It tells you how much is dissolved in the water, but not what—so a lower value doesn’t automatically mean “clean,” and a higher value doesn’t automatically mean “bad.” Important note regarding the C300: The unit re-mineralizes the water after reverse osmosis (MIN setting) and maintains the pH in the neutral range (measured at 6.8). The TDS value therefore deliberately does not drop to zero, as it would with a pure RO system—a moderate value is intended here; it is not a filter malfunction.
The test strips also measure pH, total hardness, lead, copper, and fluoride: dip, wait, and compare with the color chart. This, too, is a rough guide—not a certified analysis—but it’s just right for a practical test to see if there’s any measurable change at all.

For legally sound or health-related conclusions, a sample would need to be sent to a lab. For this practical test, however, the self-test is sufficient to show that something is actually happening with the water—and that it’s measurable, not just a subjective feeling. This is particularly evident in the water hardness, which drops from an extremely high value to a pleasantly soft level, and in the TDS, which falls from 320 to around 60 ppm. The fact that the device’s own display (357 → 45) points in the same direction is a good sign: the C300 doesn’t skew its own readings.
Hot and Cold Water in the Test
The real heart of the C300 isn’t filtration alone, but the combination of multiple water types—and this is exactly where it outperforms filter pitchers and classic sparkling water dispensers: room temperature, chilled, hot, or sparkling water all from the same spout.
For hot water, the temperature range from 40 to 100 °C is the highlight. The quick-select function offers preset levels, and you can also fine-tune the temperature in 1-degree increments—handy for tea, which doesn’t always require boiling water depending on the variety. According to the manufacturer, you can set it as high as 100 °C for black tea or coffee; I didn’t actually measure the temperature in the cup myself. The preset volumes (150, 250, 400, 500 ml) save you from having to stand there watching it. Useful feature: In hot and warm water modes, you must first press the lock button before water comes out—this prevents accidental scalding.
When it comes to cold water, you’ll need to adjust your expectations. The chilled tank is great for a glass or two here and there; but if several people use it in quick succession, you’ll notice that the unit has to work harder to keep up. This is a household appliance, not a commercial cooler. My biggest criticism: You can’t freely select the cooling temperature. The water comes out of the tap at around 7 °C and gets warmer—up to about 15 °C—when larger quantities are dispensed. It’s not possible to set a specific intermediate temperature.
Sparkling Water Function: A Replacement for SodaStream and the Like?
As a standalone carbonator, the C300 would be too big and too expensive—a classic carbonator costs a fraction of the price and can be set up in a snap. The comparison is only fair when looking at the complete package: filtering, cooling, heating, and carbonating. The carbonator is just one component.
In everyday use, this feature really shines when you’re drinking filtered water anyway. Instead of first filtering, then decanting, and finally pouring into a separate carbonator, everything stays in one device. The operation is pleasantly reminiscent of a classic carbonator: lock the bottle in place with a slight twist, press down, press the button at the top, CO₂ fizzes in—done. You can use the display to choose between mild, medium, and strong fizz. It’s quick, works reliably, and the dosage is spot-on.
Now for the clever part: For CO₂, Hydrofast doesn’t rely on its own cylinder, but on standard SodaStream screw-on cylinders. That means you’re not tied to any specific manufacturer’s store. When the cylinder is empty, you can exchange it at Edeka, Rewe, or anywhere else—just like with SodaStream. This exchange model eliminates a common pain point with the system. Important, so you don’t buy the wrong one: The screw-on cylinders with a TR21x4 thread fit; the newer Quick-Connect models do not.
There is one minor drawback: Sparkling water doesn’t come directly from the spout, but only through the included bottle—and that’s precisely the biggest weak point.
The carbonation bottle: the biggest weak point in the test
As well as the carbonation technology works—for me, the C300 falls short when it comes to the bottle. It holds only 400 ml, is made of plastic, doesn’t look particularly attractive, is covered in warning labels, and even has an expiration date. For the technology behind it, it’s a surprisingly lackluster-looking piece of equipment.
In everyday use with guests, this quickly becomes impractical: As soon as several people are drinking from it, you end up constantly carbonating and refilling it, instead of simply placing a large bottle on the table. On top of that, there’s no 350-ml preset for carbonation—400 ml was often a bit too much for me, but there was no option in between. A predefined 350-ml setting would be a small change with a big impact. (Dear Hydrofast team, if you’re reading this: this could probably be fixed via software.)
One more point: The bottle can only be washed by hand. A larger glass bottle—dishwasher-safe and easy to replace—would be much more convenient. And speaking of replacements—finding the right replacement bottle on the manufacturer’s website was unnecessarily tedious. For this price range, you’d expect better.
Operation and Display: Lots of Features, Very Well Organized
With so many functions, operation can quickly become a test of patience—temperatures, quantities, filter status, TDS, cold, hot, and sparkling water all need to be displayed somewhere. The display is therefore not just for show, and it manages to present everything in a surprisingly clear way.
A nice touch: You don’t even have to look for a button. When you place a glass under the spout, a sensor automatically activates the display—including the backlight, which looks really stylish at dusk or at night. The direct selection of temperature and amount is practical: if you always use the same amount for your tea, you no longer have to stand there watching it. The filter life indicator is also useful, since a filter is only effective as long as you remember to replace it.
Noise, Wait Times, and Refilling
The C300 isn’t silent. The cooling system, in particular, makes itself heard with an audible rattling sound whenever it kicks in—in an open-concept kitchen, this is noticeable in the evening, and it also costs energy. The filtering is quieter, but you can still hear the machinery working inside the unit.
Wait times depend on what you’re dispensing: room temperature is the fastest, chilled and hot take a bit longer, and sparkling water adds the CO₂ process. On the plus side: The 1.5-liter purified water tank easily lasts through a typical day, and the machine refills quickly—you rarely find yourself with an empty system.
A real pain point, however, lies in the raw water tank. First, you have to refill it: 5 liters sounds generous, but in our multi-person household, we have to refill it daily. I can live with that—it’s the price you pay for the installation-free design. More annoying, however, is that the tank drips when you take it out and refill it, leaving water spots on the countertop. And third, there’s an illogical quirk: if you simply top it off from the top, the sensor doesn’t detect the fresh water—you have to remove the container completely and reinsert it before the device realizes there’s water in it again.
Wastewater and the Raw Water Tank
Since the Hydrofast C300 is designed as an installation-free countertop unit, the wastewater generated during the reverse osmosis process is routed back into the raw water tank and collected there. With continued use, the water level in the raw water tank gradually decreases, while the TDS value of the remaining water simultaneously rises.
Once the integrated sensor detects that either the minimum water level has been reached or the TDS limit has been exceeded, the water change indicator on the device lights up red, an audible alert sounds, and water production is automatically stopped. This is designed to protect the RO membrane from clogging.
In this case, all you need to do is empty the remaining concentrate (wastewater) from the raw water tank and then refill it with fresh tap water.
Cleaning, Filter Replacement, and Ongoing Costs
With water dispensers, it’s not the first week that matters, but the maintenance afterward. Filters, tanks, drip tray, sparkling water bottle, drinking water contact surfaces—all of these need to be kept clean on a regular basis. “Convenience” here doesn’t mean “never have to worry about it again.”
Changing the filter itself is straightforward: half a turn, remove the cartridge, insert a new one. It’s the heart of the machine; according to the manufacturer, it lasts about half a year to three-quarters of a year, depending on usage, and can be easily replaced—a recurring expense that should be factored in. On top of that, there are the CO₂ cylinders, which—thanks to SodaStream compatibility—are inexpensive and widely available. You shouldn’t use the PET bottle indefinitely either.
The bottom line is that the ongoing costs are higher than with a filter pitcher—but they’re calculated differently. The C300 replaces several appliances and can therefore naturally reduce your beverage purchases. Whether it’s worth it depends mainly on how much water you actually drink and how many bottles you’ve been lugging around so far.

But for those who use a lot of water every day, don’t want to lug around crates, and want filtered, hot, cold, and sparkling water from a single device, this is a real kitchen upgrade. It shines most as a central water station that combines a filter pitcher, carbonator, kettle, and cold water dispenser all in one. The unit is well-built, works quickly, and the water tastes noticeably better than tap water—and we enjoy using it in our daily lives. It’s not without its compromises, though: the tank, filter, CO₂, and cleaning remain issues; the raw water tank leaks, and the sensor acts up when refilling.
How strongly we recommend it depends on your drinking habits. For mainly still water and tea, the C300 is a real standout—flexible in temperature selection, convenient, and even kid-friendly.
