Insta360 Snap Review: What smartphone creators have been waiting for

Selfie screens are very popular with smartphone creators. No wonder, after all, they allow you to record videos with your smartphone’s superior rear cameras while always keeping an eye on yourself thanks to the screen.

However, most of these selfie monitors currently available on the market are not without their problems. Either they only work with iPhones, have an enormous latency in the display (due to the Bluetooth connection) or lack practical operation.

Insta360 Snap

This is where the new Insta360 Snap comes into play, which aims to eliminate all these shortcomings. The selfie screen, which was developed together with AMIRO, specifically addresses all of these problems and has the following unique selling points, among others:

  • 3.5-inch touchscreen for intuitive operation
  • Broad compatibility with iPhones and Android devices
  • Connection via USB-C (without latency) and MagSafe
  • Integrated light with 3 color temperatures and 5 brightness levels

So it looks like Insta360 has done its homework. Measuring 103 mm x 67.5 mm x 8.2 mm, the Insta360 Snap is pleasantly compact and weighs just 89 grams. The white plastic housing has a magnetic MagSafe back, thanks to which it docks magnetically onto iPhones or Google Pixel smartphones (or all other devices with a MagSafe case).

And if your smartphone does not support MagSafe, Insta360 includes a magnetic ring in the scope of delivery. This allows the Snap to be attached to any device. Unlike most of its competitors, the selfie monitor is connected via a USB-C port.

Although this is not quite as practical as the wireless Bluetooth connection of most competitors, it does have a decisive advantage: The USB-C connection guarantees a more stable transmission than with wireless solutions and with a significantly lower latency (delay) of only around 30 milliseconds. This is an invaluable advantage, especially when it is important that recordings can be tracked accurately and lip-synchronously.

Another advantage is that it is of course much more intuitive to use, as there is no need for Bluetooth pairing or charging the screen.

The features of the Insta360 Snap

The Insta360 Snap is extremely well thought out. Simply connect it to the smartphone and the selfie screen is recognized. Android smartphones then immediately allow mirroring to the external display, whereas iPhone models require the zoom function to be activated in the settings.

The Snap is therefore immediately ready for use on Android. Particularly practical: the artificial leather back can simply be folded back over the display to prevent accidental contact with the smartphone screen.

High-resolution selfies, perfect image composition and practical adjustment of the image section or selection of the camera lens: none of this is a problem thanks to the Snap’s touchscreen. The view can also be mirrored at the touch of a button and, if you like, you can even operate your entire smartphone via the new screen. How much sense that makes, however, remains to be seen. The Insta360 Snap is compatible with almost all camera and social apps, so there are no limits to the creative possibilities.

Insta360 Snap in practice test

In practice, the Insta360 Snap is very beginner-friendly and intuitive. Especially under Android. Simply connect, confirm the mirroring request and you’re ready to go. It is operated using a total of four buttons. Two on the side and two directly below the screen.

Insta360 Snap

The side buttons are used to switch the screen on or off and mirror the displayed image. The buttons below the display are responsible for the integrated lighting: Press the right button with the sun symbol to switch between the five brightness levels. The left button, on the other hand, activates the lighting and switches between the three predefined color temperatures such as cool white, neutral and warm white.

This allows different looks to be achieved in practice and the illumination to be adapted to the respective environment. Of course, it would have been nice to be able to adjust the color temperature individually, but the three presets are more than sufficient. Also important to know: the Insta360 Snap works completely independently and has no app control.

It could hardly be more intuitive to use. The Insta360 Snap fulfills its purpose excellently. The brightness of the integrated light is high enough to achieve very good image quality even in a dark room.

The only thing that bothered me a little in practical use is that the pressure point of both buttons below the screen can hardly be felt. More precise feedback would have been desirable here. But apart from that? A really practical tool for smartphone creators.

How much battery does the Insta360 Snap consume? As the selfie screen is operated via USB-C, it naturally drains the smartphone’s battery. The consumption naturally depends on the usage, the activated lighting and the brightness level. A maximum increase in battery consumption of around 15-20% (at brightness level 5) was observed in the test. It is therefore advisable to switch off the screen when it is not in use.

Insta360 Snap Review: Conclusion

With the Insta360 Snap, the manufacturer delivers an intuitive, cleverly designed and extremely practical selfie monitor that stands out from the competition, not least thanks to its integrated lighting and cable connection.

Set-up and use are child’s play, the image display has no measurable latency thanks to the cable connection and the integrated lighting enables high-quality images to be taken even in complete darkness. Thanks to the practical MagSafe holder and well thought-out display cover, the Snap leaves virtually nothing to be desired.

Only a better feel for the controls would have been nice, while the price is considerably higher compared to the competition. However, the Insta360 Snap also comes with unique features that absolutely justify the price in my eyes.

  • Magnetic attachment
