Nanoleaf Lines in test: Smart lines for relaxed light

Nanoleaf is no stranger to smart lighting. Especially among gamers and streamers, the wall panels are very popular. They make a classy scenery and can be freely arranged. At the end of 2021, a new product was announced – Nanoleaf Lines. As the name suggests, these are lines. These lines can also be freely arranged and the starter set includes nine lines. Doesn’t sound like much at first, but the Nanoleaf Lines are very convincing, as we show you in the test.

Design and scope of delivery

Everything in the box is securely packed. This is also important, because the lines are not really thick and become very delicate. In addition to the nine lines, we find all sorts of additional material for assembly as well as the power supply. The nine lines each have a length of 27.85 cm and are just 0.8 cm high. They are also not really deep at 2 cm.

To hold on the wall, ceiling or your other mounting location, a total of 9 connectors are included. With them it is possible to arrange the lines freely. Also included is a control unit, including the power supply. This is where every pattern starts. For easy mounting, each connector has an adhesive pad. If this is too unsafe for you, you can fix the connectors with screws.

From each connector you can go in six different directions. Although it looks like any pattern is possible, there are limitations. To be on the safe side, Nanoleaf directly tells you how not to connect the lines. You still have a lot of freedom in the arrangement.

Almost to be expected, but the Lines use a different connection than the other Nanoleaf products. So it is not possible to mix them. If other Nanoleaf products are already available, it would be exciting to invent completely new shapes with them.

In terms of design, there are not many limits with the Nanoleaf Lines. Be it in the form, how the lines are arranged, or in the end also the adaptation of the different colors. For support in the arrangement Nanoleaf has also provided, in the app we can plan our design before – and then assemble.

Mounting and setup

Mounting couldn’t be easier with the included adhesive pads. Once we’ve decided on a layout, we work our way around the connectors piece by piece. Once glued on, the connectors hold firmly to the wall. So when removing, some of the wallpaper might stick to the connector.

From each connector we can apply the Nanoleaf Lines in five different directions. Already subtracted is the “input direction”. So each connector has six free places. To round off the lines visually, there is a plastic cap for each connector. So the connectors close exactly with the lines.

As with the other Nanoleaf products, there are no limits to your imagination when it comes to the pattern. And as mentioned earlier, you can also consult the layout wizard in Nanoleaf’s app and don’t have to try out or paint on how you want your layout.

Setting up the lines is as easy as mounting them. With the help of the app, you even have three different options at your disposal. The process can be completed via NFC, QR code or the code on the adapter’s intermediate piece. The setup via NFC and QR code did not work right away with a Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC, but it worked directly without problems with the iPhone.

App and function

The good implementation of the product continues in the app. In the first moment, you literally feel overwhelmed by all the setting options. If you deal with the Nanoleaf app for a short moment, the Canadian manufacturer simply gives you a lot of info along the way – also for the other products.

The most important is the “Dashboard” item. There we can see all the products of Nanoleaf that we have in our household. From the dashboard we can turn on and off the lines. We can also access many pre-made effects and scenes. Thus, fixed colors or gradients can be selected. In fact, each line can display two different colors.

However, Nanoleaf builds in a completely different feature. We can set the Lines to react to ambient sounds such as music – the “rhythm” mode. Custom effects can be created here as well. For the uncreative, these can also be downloaded.

If you don’t want to control the device via app, a small control panel is included. You can use this to adjust the brightness or the effect. The previously mentioned “rhythm” mode can also be activated via this.

With the Nanoleaf Lines, the future is being thought of. Besides IFTT, HomeKit, Alexa or Google Home, a whole lot more is supported. In threaded networks, the Lines can be used as border routers and the new Matter standard is also to be supported.

For enthusiasts, there’s more: the Nanoleaf Lines could be set up in Home Assistant and openHAB with a bit of tinkering. They can likewise be integrated into Home Connect Plus with just a few clicks.

Conclusion

Anyone who has other Nanoleaf products at home or has already read tests knows about the quality. With the Nanoleaf Lines it is no different. If you’re looking to spruce up your apartment or house with smart light fixtures, definitely keep an eye on Nanoleaf.

Apart from the very good workmanship, the lines just offer so much scope for design. Be it either via the arrangement or in the end via the possibilities of the lighting. You almost can’t get much more freedom.

We simply can’t find a real negative point. Above all, the integration capability and the preparation for the Matter standard suggests that we will be able to integrate the Nanoleaf Lines into any common smart home system for even longer.
