Robotic lawn mowers without boundary wires are no longer a rarity, but many models rely on an RTK station with an antenna mast. The Natural Expressions Performance 7 takes a different approach: It does away with wires, RTK, and LiDAR entirely and instead relies entirely on a triple-camera system with AI image processing. Natural Expressions is no stranger to the North American gardening market, but the Performance 7 is the brand’s first robotic lawn mower for Europe. We took a look at how the camera-based navigation performs in everyday use, how easy it is to set up, and where this newcomer might reach its limits.

Design and Build Quality

The Performance 7 comes in a simple, matte dark gray housing, with the model name on the side and the Natural Expressions logo on the front. It’s pleasantly compact for a robotic lawn mower and can be easily carried from one place to another. The build quality is also excellent. The gaps are uniform; nothing wobbles or creaks.

On the top is a prominent red stop button, next to a small control panel with four buttons for On/Off, Start/Pause, Return to Charging Station, and OK. Another notable feature is a mechanical dial that allows you to adjust the cutting height between 20 and 60 mm directly on the unit.

This reminds me of the eufy C15 (Review | € 749.00 *) and is a matter of personal preference. I find it practical in itself, but since you can adjust pretty much all other settings in the app, I also find it a bit cumbersome.

On the front, hidden behind a dark cover, sits the robot’s heart: the camera unit with two stereo 3D cameras, an additional semantic AI camera, and an LED light for low-light conditions. This vision unit serves both as a boundary wire and as an RTK antenna—you won’t find an antenna mast like the ones included with some competing models on the Performance 7.

This keeps the overall height low and makes setup significantly easier. At the rear, two large, deep-tread wheels provide propulsion and traction, while at the front, two small swivel casters enable tight turning maneuvers. On the underside, a single mowing disc with three movable blades does the work—a proven and easy-to-maintain design.

Thanks to its IPX6 protection rating, the housing can be easily cleaned with a garden hose; however, the manufacturer advises against using a pressure washer. The included charging station is flat and space-saving. Of course, the included garage cover is particularly practical. It protects both the charging station and the robot from rain and sun. In this price range, that’s by no means a given. Overall, the entire package feels high-quality and well-thought-out.

Setup and Commissioning

This is exactly where the Performance 7 aims to shine: Natural Expressions advertises wireless setup in about five minutes, and at its core, that’s accurate. First, the charging station is secured in a suitable location with screws and then connected to a power source via a power cord. The AuraMow app guides you step by step through the process with illustrated instructions. Next, you pair the robot with your smartphone using a QR code, which takes just seconds.

Before the first use, a firmware update may be required, which runs in the background. After that, automatic mapping takes over: The robot sets off on its own and maps the lawn with its cameras; alternatively, it can be steered along the edges using a virtual joystick, just like a remote-controlled car. Both methods work reliably. Smaller areas of about 65 m² are accurately mapped in less than 15 minutes, including clearly defined boundaries.

Even larger properties of just under 500 m² can be precisely mapped in a little over two hours, with the robot automatically connecting separate lawn areas via detected pathways. Manual adjustments to the map are generally not necessary. Especially when compared to traditional robotic mowers with boundary wires, this saves a noticeable amount of time during the initial setup.

AuraMow App

The Performance 7 is controlled via the manufacturer’s own AuraMow app for iOS and Android. There, you can create more than 20 zones. For each one, you can define individual settings, such as restricted areas. The robot moves back and forth autonomously between separate areas via narrow passages approximately 60 cm wide.

A Spot Mode allows for targeted re-mowing of specific areas, along with live video streaming to monitor mowing progress and detailed settings for track spacing, edge-cutting distance, travel speed, cutting speed, and mowing direction. The range of features here exceeds what one would typically expect in this price range.

If the device is lifted, the app also immediately triggers a theft alert. The dashboard clearly displays the mowed area and mowing duration. Overall, the software impresses with stable performance and a great overview that even beginners should be able to navigate with ease.

Navigation and Obstacle Detection

In practical use, the navigation is particularly impressive. The Performance 7 cuts even, parallel paths without any noticeable gaps and, after a charging break, resumes work exactly where it last left off. The camera-based orientation remains stable even under trees, in the shade, and when the sun is low in the sky—glitches, such as those that pure RTK systems can exhibit when visibility to the sky is poor, do not occur here.

The front-mounted LED light is sufficient for operation at dusk, but a purely camera-based system is generally less suitable for use in complete darkness. The robot proves reliable when it comes to obstacle detection: It detects garden furniture, flower pots, and people and navigates around them at a safe distance; during testing, it did not come into direct contact with even smaller objects such as a water bottle.

Even with irregular lawn edges, curved flower bed borders, and varying lawn widths, the robot stays precisely within the virtual map. Caution should be exercised only with very thin objects such as cables or garden hoses. Even though these are detected in most cases, there is still a residual risk that they will be overlooked and shredded—which is particularly frustrating with garden hoses.

The cut looks neat, though taller grass requires several passes before the area appears evenly maintained. In practice, the Performance 7 achieves a coverage rate of about 50 m² per hour. While this is below the 100 m² specified by the manufacturer, for a purely camera-based robotic mower in this class, it’s actually a good figure in real-world garden use, which involves turning maneuvers and edge areas.

The mowing results along the edges could be improved. Here, you’ll have to accept a 10- to 15-cm-wide unmowed strip, since the mower deck cannot be extended. If you don’t want to do manual touch-ups with a lawn trimmer, you should check out competitors like the Ecovacs GOAT O1200 (Review | Price not available *). This model addresses the issue with a built-in trimmer.

However, if the boundary is at the same level as the lawn, the Performance 7 can drive over it, resulting in a seamless, uniform mowing pattern. For the maximum recommended area of 500 m², multiple charging cycles are, of course, necessary. The robotic mower, however, covers the area autonomously and without any intervention. A full battery charge takes about 90 minutes, after which the robot automatically resumes work at the last mowed spot.

It handled small inclines in the test garden with ease, and the rear wheels with deep treads provide sufficient traction even on wet surfaces. When rain begins to fall, the device retreats thanks to its rain sensor and resumes work later. Its IPX6 certification also makes it easy to clean with a garden hose. At around 56 dB, the noise level remains pleasantly low and is unlikely to cause any disturbance, even in densely populated residential areas.

With the Performance 7, Natural Expressions has made a convincing debut in the European market for robotic lawn mowers. Instead of relying on a boundary wire or an RTK antenna, the device relies entirely on its camera system—and this works surprisingly well in everyday use: Setup takes just a few minutes, mapping is fast and precise, and the robot shows virtually no weaknesses when it comes to obstacle detection.

The fact that a cover for the charging station and replacement blades are included in the package rounds out this overall fair deal. However, anyone with a large or highly winding garden larger than 500 m² should look for a model with all-wheel drive, and the purely manual cutting height adjustment via a dial also feels a bit outdated given the otherwise modern features. For small to medium-sized home gardens, the Performance 7 is nonetheless a clear recommendation.
