With the Navimow X420, Segway is introducing a robotic lawn mower that is deliberately not designed for well-maintained small gardens, but is intended primarily for large, challenging gardens with slopes, roots, edges, and varied terrain. As an all-wheel-drive model with four driven wheels, wireless navigation, and an area coverage rate that’s unusually high for this class of device, the X420 clearly positions itself in the premium segment. I took a closer look at this robust robotic mower and tested how its impressive features perform in everyday use.

Design and Build Quality of the Navimow X420
It becomes clear as soon as you unpack it: The X420 is not a device for a compact suburban yard. Weighing just under 29 kilograms and measuring approximately 85 × 61 × 35 centimeters, it looks more like a small off-road vehicle than a classic robotic lawn mower.
The large wheels and sturdy construction further reinforce this impression. The build quality is top-notch: the gaps are uniform, the plastics used feel high-quality, and the entire structure gives off a solid impression.
The difference in size compared to the charging station is striking; the station is quite compact relative to the robotic lawn mower itself, so the X420 only partially rests on it while charging. On the top of the robot is a small color display along with a control panel.
A status light also indicates signal strength, and the highly visible red stop button allows for an emergency stop if necessary. On the front are various cameras for navigation and obstacle detection.
For emergencies, there’s also a sturdy bumper underneath. The carrying handle at the rear, on the other hand, allows you to transport this colossus, which weighs nearly 30 kg. On the underside, the dual mower deck—and the intriguing front axle—naturally catch your eye at first glance.
Setup and Commissioning
Installation is completed entirely without boundary wires. Although the package includes an external RTK antenna that initially seems mandatory, its use is actually optional. In the app, you can choose whether to use the internal antenna or the external RTK solution.
The only important requirement is a stable Wi-Fi connection at the charging station’s location; it’s not necessary elsewhere in the yard. For mapping, you can choose between an automatic camera scan and a manual option, in which the robot is guided across the lawn like a remote-controlled vehicle.
In practice, manual mapping delivers more precise results, which is why it’s the recommended method. However, I was also satisfied with the results of automatic mapping, since my test garden has very straight boundaries anyway.
A minor quirk becomes apparent when turning during mapping: The front wheels have a very wide steering angle, which occasionally causes the robot to get in its own way in tight situations. During the test, it briefly got stuck between a bucket and an umbrella stand.
However, it freed itself from this predicament on its own after a few seconds. Additionally, the robot could not be steered in reverse. This is somewhat surprising, since reverse steering was possible without any issues in remote control mode.
However, these quirks no longer matter during subsequent autonomous mowing. Once property boundaries, restricted zones, and passageways have been mapped, a complete map is generated within a few minutes, which the X420 uses to operate autonomously.
Navimow App
Control is handled via the Navimow app, which performed consistently well in our tests. During setup, it stands out for its practical, step-by-step guidance—such as instructions on the required clearance in front of and beside the charging station. During operation, mowing zones, restricted areas, and schedules can be clearly managed; the cutting height can be set individually for each zone; and a traction control feature ensures gentler handling on wet or soft surfaces.
All of this is complemented by detailed mowing reports that provide a good overview of the work completed. Compared to some competitors, however, the cutting height can only be adjusted in 5-millimeter increments rather than 1-millimeter increments. The X420 also lacks a live video feed from the robot’s camera, a feature offered by some competing models. That’s a shame, since the necessary camera technology is actually built in.
Navigation and Obstacle Detection
Navigation is one of the X420’s greatest strengths. Instead of a traditional RTK base station, Segway Network combines RTK via cellular networks with a 360° camera system and visual positioning. This allows the robot to maintain very precise positioning even under trees, along fences, or in challenging radio environments.
In addition, the Navimow is extremely maneuverable, thanks to its Xero-Turn all-wheel drive (AWD) system. The four individually driven wheels feature eccentric front-wheel steering, which ensures an extremely small turning radius. In practice, however, I was particularly impressed by the obstacle detection. Bushes and shrubs are reliably recognized as such rather than treated as fixed obstacles, and even moving objects like pets are detected and safely navigated around.
The X420 even handles narrow passages less than one meter wide with ease. The Navimow also reliably detected smaller objects such as tennis balls. And if a person gets too close to the robotic mower, it automatically pauses briefly. This isn’t annoying at all; once you move away, it resumes mowing on its own.
Mowing Performance of the Navimow X420
When it comes to actual mowing, the X420 performs at a high level. The dual-disc cutting system, with a total of twelve blades and a cutting width of a full 43 cm, combined with its high travel speed, ensures above-average area coverage—a feature that really comes into its own on large lawns.
Even dense or damp vegetation is reliably handled by the two powerful cutting motors without the mower becoming clogged. After several passes, the cut appears even and clean. Given the wide cutting height range of 25 to 95 mm, there’s something for everyone. When it comes to edge cutting, however, the picture is more nuanced.
Without a separate trimmer module, depending on the edge height, a residual strip ranging from a few centimeters to about ten centimeters remains if the lawn edge is significantly higher than the lawn itself. The EdgeSense function, which can be activated, allows the robot to get closer to edges, visibly reducing the strip of grass left along the edge.
Due to its rectangular design, some grass naturally remains in the corners. Its lawn-friendly operation is particularly noteworthy: TÜV certification in the “Lawn Care” category confirms that, after a simulated one-year continuous operation, there is only minimal visual damage to the turf—even during the turning maneuvers typical of all-wheel-drive mowers.
Conclusion on the Navimow X420
The Segway Navimow X420 is not a robotic mower for small, flat ornamental lawns—it is simply oversized for that application. Its true home is large, challenging properties with slopes, roots, edges, and varying terrain. That’s exactly where it really shines: powerful all-wheel drive, excellent climbing ability, precise and reliable navigation without a boundary wire, above-average coverage, and a driving style that’s noticeably gentle on the lawn.
The only real compromise is in edge trimming. Its high price clearly positions the X420 in the premium segment, but for those who regularly have to contend with difficult terrain and maintain a lawn of up to 2,000 m², this is a technically sophisticated all-in-one package that delivers on its promises in practice across nearly every category.
