Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 test: Robust giant
Party speakers are very popular. They are large, promise a rich sound and come with all kinds of features that make every party a party. This also applies to the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931, which is comparatively light at 5.85 kg despite its height of 560 mm.
By comparison, the similarly sized and comparably equipped JBL PartyBox Club 120 (our test) weighs more than twice as much at 11.05 kg. However, anyone who thinks that Sharp has skimped on quality here is wrong.
Although the speaker has a matt plastic housing, it still feels absolutely robust and of high quality. There are only a few minor inconsistencies in the transitions on the top, but this is not really annoying. The drivers are also protected by a metal grille, which can also be removed using an Allen key.
The manufacturer has provided the speaker with a carrying handle at the top front, which of course makes transportation much easier. There are four rubberized feet on the underside to ensure a secure hold. If you prefer, you can also use the XParty Sing vertically, which also works perfectly.
Of course, RGB lighting is also a must. On the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931, this includes internal lighting for the two drivers, a two-part frame surrounding the driver units and a strobe light at the bottom edge.
The lighting effects can be adjusted using the control elements on the top of the speaker. The RGB lighting can also be completely deactivated here, while you can also switch the strobe effect on and off individually.
Connections and controls
- Clearly arranged controls
- No companion app
- Playback via AUX, USB and Bluetooth
The control panel of the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 is located on the top and is clearly laid out. Important: There is no companion app for the party speaker, so it makes sense to take a look at the manual. After all, almost all the controls are duplicated.
Specifically, you have the following controls to choose from (from left to right):
- On/Off and changing the audio source
- Equalizer effect and microphone reverb effect on/off
- LED light effects
- Play/pause and Bluetooth pairing
- Previous track
- Next track
- Microphone volume control
- Super bass and duo mode
- Playback volume control
Below the controls, you will find a compact display that informs you about the current source, volume and other parameters. Very practical.
The connections, on the other hand, are located at the back behind a rubberized cover. The PS-931 is splash-proof in accordance with IPX4 and is therefore also suitable for outdoor use.
In terms of ports, the speaker is quite versatile. One USB-A port allows the playback of audio files, while the second is intended for charging devices. Two microphone inputs allow you to connect microphones if you want to sing along to the music – a wired microphone is already included in the scope of delivery.
There is also an AUX connection if you want to connect the speaker to a cable. The power connection rounds off the selection. But don’t worry: the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 can of course also be supplied with music wirelessly. It uses the modern Bluetooth 5.3 standard for this, but only supports the SBC codec.
Battery life of the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931
- Up to 13 hours running time
- Fully charged in three hours
- Can also be used from the mains
The Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 is also very well positioned in terms of battery life. Up to 13 hours of use are possible. This means that the Bluetooth speaker outperforms its counterparts such as the aforementioned JBL PartyBox Club 120 (maximum 12 hours).
However, a Sony ULT Field 7 (our test) lasts noticeably longer with a runtime of up to 30 hours. The Sharp speaker’s lithium-ion battery is fully charged in around three hours. Or you can simply plug it into the mains, where the integrated battery is automatically recharged.
Sound quality of the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931
- Four drivers with 180 watts of power
- pleasantly neutral, versatile sound,…
- … but requires a lot of fine-tuning with the equalizers
Sharp has equipped the XParty Sing PS-931 with a total of four drivers: two 6.5-inch woofers and two 2-inch tweeters are intended to provide a rich and lively sound. The maximum output is 180 watts, the frequency band offers standard fare at 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, but extends further down into the bass range than JBL.
And I have to say: I really like the sound that comes out of the speaker. For a party speaker, the sound is comparatively neutral and doesn’t put the bass in the foreground. On the contrary, it actually takes a back seat to the detailed mids.
At least in the standard active “Flat” equalizer. The various EQ presets have a huge impact on the sound and it is advisable to switch between the settings depending on the genre being played.
Especially in “Dance” mode and with Super Bass switched on, the speaker delivers a lot of boom and even at low volumes with a volume value of 8 (out of 30!), it makes the interior dance. This shows that there are still plenty of reserves to power even larger rooms and parties. Outstanding: even at high volumes, the sound hardly distorts, with a slight reduction in the treble.
However, the PS-931’s convincing sound has to be worked for. In the “Rock” preset, rock or heavy metal music sounds a little too lean in the bass. In the “Flat” EQ, there is generally a noticeable lack of brilliance in the highs and upper mids (i.e. instruments and vocals).
I have actually had the best experiences with the “Dance” preset, which copes very well with almost all genres. It’s a shame that there is no way to see what effects the options have on the sound or to make your own settings.
But enough complaining: the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 sounds really good and has more than enough oomph to get even the lamest party started. Personally, however, I find the switchable “Super Bass” a little too intense, as the lower mids are somewhat overlaid here. But that’s complaining at a high level. If you like, you can also connect two speakers together via Duo Mode, even wirelessly.
Karaoke function
I can be brief about the advertised karaoke function: The wired microphone is simply plugged into the back and is ready to use immediately. It only has an on/off switch and offers no further adjustments.
You can adjust the volume separately from the playback volume and deactivate the reverb completely or leave it active. In terms of sound, it is absolutely sufficient for bawling along or for announcements through the loudspeaker. But it doesn’t offer much more. There is no real karaoke function, where, for example, only the vocals of a song are reduced.
Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 Review: Conclusion
The most outstanding feature of the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 is undoubtedly its excellent price-performance ratio. For around 130 euros, you get a high-quality, weatherproof and really good-sounding party speaker. And for around half the price of comparable competitors.
Sure, they sometimes sound better and offer high-resolution Bluetooth codecs. But in my opinion, that doesn’t justify the higher price. The PS-931 delivers a convincing sound across all genres, at least if you play with the equalizer a little (with mixed playlists).
Operation is intuitive, the variety of connections is pleasing and the battery life of up to 13 hours is also at a very good level. In addition, there is attractive and customizable RGB lighting, which makes the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 an absolute price-performance hit.
- Outstanding value for money
- Good sound
- Long battery life
- Chic RGB lighting
- Sound needs fine-tuning
- Karaoke function only a gimmick
- No companion app
