soundcore Work Review: Compact design meets high-quality materials

When you pick up the soundcore Work for the first time, you are immediately impressed by its size. The handy AI dictation machine consists of a round microphone and a flat, square charging case. The manufacturer offers both a white and a black version.

The microphone weighs just ten grams and is roughly the size of a two-euro coin, only slightly thicker. The aluminum housing ensures a pleasantly high-quality feel. The soundcore Work doesn’t look like a cheap plastic toy, but like a serious tool.

The overall package mainly consists of the charging case with USB-C connection, to the corner of which the actual microphone is magnetically attached. This magnetic connection is one of the most well thought-out design decisions: The microphone can be removed in a flash and worn in three different ways. Either via a clip on the collar, via the supplied neckband or magnetically attached directly to the smartphone. An additional magnetic ring is even included for smartphones with a protective cover. The total weight with case is 48 grams, making the soundcore Work the ideal companion for on the go.

A clear plus point is the IPX4 protection class: the recorder is splash-proof and can therefore also be used outdoors or in light rain without any problems. The Anker subsidiary also provides the dictation recorder with a connection to Apple’s Find My network. This is particularly practical if you don’t want to lose sight of this tiny little helper when you’re out and about.

Features and special features of the soundcore Work

The heart of the soundcore Work is its AI-supported transcription, which is based on OpenAI GPT-4.1 and, according to the manufacturer, achieves an accuracy of up to 97 percent. And that across more than 100 languages. This makes the recorder not just a simple recording device, but an intelligent productivity tool. The audio data is transmitted to the cloud in encrypted form. Using AES-256 and TLS 1.3 to the AWS platform. The manufacturer promises that the files will be deleted immediately after transcription or kept for a maximum of seven days if the download is still pending.

The automatic speaker recognition is particularly useful: the system identifies different participants in the conversation and marks their contributions with time stamps in the transcript. However, if you are recording alone or want to record your thoughts, you can simply deactivate this speaker recognition. The AI also offers over 20 presets, for example for structured summaries of sales meetings, project meetings or brainstorming sessions.

Another practical feature is the marking function: important moments during the recording can be marked with a double tap on the device. The soundcore Work confirms this with brief, haptic feedback so that you know immediately that the action has been carried out.

These markers then appear highlighted in the transcript and allow you to jump to important passages. The local memory offers enough space for up to 250 hours of audio material, so you don’t have to constantly transfer recordings.

Plans and premium features

As with all AI tools, not all features are available free of charge. Soundcore divides the Work functions into a free Starter plan and a paid Pro subscription or an “Unlimited” plan.

What are the differences between the subscription models?

Feature Starter Pro Unlimited
Free price Free of charge 72,99 € / 6 months 249.99 € / year
Transcription credit 300 min/month 1,200 min/month Unlimited
Total summary

Anyone who buys the soundcore Work receives a free trial subscription to the Pro plan for a period of six months, which normally costs 72.99 euros (for this time frame). The Unlimited plan, on the other hand, is aimed at power users who want to get the most out of the AI dictation device. The price here is a hefty 249.99 euros per year.

The main difference between the plans therefore lies in the transcription capacity and the AI features (summary & “Ask AI”). All other functions are already included in the free Starter plan.

Operation of the soundcore Work

The soundcore Work is extremely intuitive and very easy to use. A single press of a button on the side of the microphone starts or pauses the recording, while an LED always indicates the current status. No annoying unlocking of the smartphone, no cumbersome app opening. Just press it and start talking. This simplicity is no coincidence, but a deliberate design principle: the device should work in the background so that you can be fully present in the conversation. soundcore Work

For iOS users, there is a decisive convenience advantage: as soon as the recording starts, the soundcore app on the iPhone opens automatically and begins to track the recording status in real time. If you stop recording, the files are immediately and automatically uploaded to the app via the Apple MFi protocol, without any manual transfer. Unfortunately, this process is not quite as automatic for Android users. They have to activate the background permissions manually, which makes the workflow a little less elegant, but also works perfectly.

Navigation in the app itself is intuitive: transcripts can be scrolled, read along with the playback and easily searched for markers. Speakers can be given names afterwards and Pro users can even ask questions directly to the transcribed text using the “Ask AI” function. The content can be exported in the common formats MP3, DOCX, TXT, Markdown and PDF.

How long does the soundcore Work battery last?

Although the soundcore Work is extremely compact and lightweight, the manufacturer has given the AI dictation machine an impressive battery life. The microphone itself lasts up to eight hours of continuous recording, which is more than enough for a full working day including several meetings. Anyone planning longer assignments (such as conferences lasting several days, business trips or intensive interviews) will benefit enormously from the integrated charging case: it extends the device by another three full charging cycles, increasing the total runtime to up to 32 hours. This corresponds to four complete working days without having to go to a power socket even once.

soundcore Work

Compared to its equally compact competitor, the PLAUD NotePin (our test), this is a good result, but with 20 hours of continuous use, the NotePin lasts much longer.

The charging time of the soundcore Work is also absolutely suitable for everyday use at around 1.5 hours to fully charge the microphone. The case itself is conveniently charged via USB-C. One small drawback: the charging case does not display a precise battery level as a percentage, only an LED status indicator. So if you want to know the exact charge level of the case, you have to consult the app.

soundcore Work in a practical test

In everyday use, the soundcore Work shows what it can really do. Operation is intuitive and the recordings and transcriptions are immediately available. The two built-in microphones with 360-degree detection and AI-supported noise suppression deliver high speech intelligibility even in noisy environments. Voices remain clearly intelligible up to a radius of five meters. soundcore Work

Particularly impressive: the Work even records voices from loudspeakers (for example during remote conferences… or a video that is playing on the side) reliably and clearly.

What particularly impressed me was the speed at which transcriptions are made. 60 minutes of audio recordings are processed in around 1.5 minutes. A test with around 100 German words produced an almost error-free transcription, including a summary, within 2-3 minutes. Slips of the tongue, pauses and other errors are also intelligently compensated for by the AI, which makes post-editing much easier.

However, the soundcore Work is not perfect. The dictation machine reaches its limits when it comes to conversations in different languages, while the software features provided can’t quite keep up with PlaudAI. But to be honest: for 99 percent of applications, what is on offer here is perfectly adequate.

For example, soundcore does not have a web interface to view the recordings, transcripts and summaries directly on a PC or notebook. In addition, PlaudAI offers much more in-depth transcription and customization with the creation of mind maps, bullet points or to-do lists.

There is one critical aspect when it comes to data security: as the transcription runs via OpenAI, it can hardly be ruled out that sensitive content may be used to improve the model. The Anker subsidiary does not provide any concrete information on this.

soundcore Work Review: Conclusion

The soundcore Work presents itself as a well thought-out, impressively compact productivity tool that combines the strengths of a modern dictation machine with AI-supported transcription. The design is high-quality and versatile.

It is extremely easy to use and the transcription quality is at a level that can really make everyday work easier Apple users in particular benefit from the deep iOS integration with automatic app start, instant file upload and Find My support. The handy microphone records voices clearly and reliably and impresses with its intuitive operation.

The fact that not all features are available for free is understandable in view of the powerful AI functions. Especially as the subscription model, although expensive, is priced more fairly than the competition. Fortunately, soundcore already offers the most important functions in the free starter plan. For professional users, journalists, students and anyone who wants to noticeably increase their productivity with voice-based documentation, soundcore Work is recommended. However, the Plaud NotePin offers significantly more features at a comparable price.
