Teufel Boomster 4 Review: Stylish companion for the living room and on the go

The Teufel Boomster 4 presents itself in the classic boombox design typical of the series, which is strikingly reminiscent of the 2000s and is equipped with a practical carrying handle on the top. With dimensions of 37 x 18 x 14.8 cm and a weight of around 3.75 kg, it is relatively large and heavy, but easy to transport thanks to the sturdy handle.

The housing of the Bluetooth speaker, which is available in black, white or mint green, gives a high-quality and robust impression, which is particularly important for outdoor use. The IPX5 protection class guarantees protection against water jets and splashes, so that even light rain showers or splashes of water cannot harm the speaker.

The front of the Boomster 4 is equipped with generous and high-quality speaker grilles, behind which the drivers are located. The device includes controls in the form of an easy-to-touch touch bar on the top front of the device.

Overall, the Boomster 4 is so high-quality and durable that it is equally suitable as an outdoor partner or kitchen radio, with the classic boombox feel giving the speaker a high-quality look. However, the folded antenna on the back reveals that this is much more than just a Bluetooth speaker. Teufel has once again included a high-quality DAB+ radio system.

Equipment and features

Technically, the Boomster 4 is based on a coherent 2.1 sound system with a total of five speakers: Two tweeters, two mid-range speakers, an 11 cm subwoofer and two passive bass cones for additional low bass. This combination produces a powerful and detailed sound with a powerful bass foundation.

The integrated Dynamore technology provides an extended sound stage that is even wider and more vivid, especially in stereo mode. For wireless connections, the Boomster 4 uses Bluetooth 5.0 with support for the high-resolution aptX HD codec and AAC, which ensures high sound quality with wireless transmission. The speaker also supports multipoint so that two Bluetooth devices can be paired simultaneously.

Cool for parties: In party mode, it can be linked to another Boomster 4 to create an even greater stereo sound experience.

A special feature compared to many competing devices is the integrated digital radio receiver with DAB+ and classic FM radio (including RDS), each with six memory locations for favorite stations. The small, red display on the front provides information about stations and source selection, but unfortunately there is no track display in Bluetooth mode – that would have been nice.

In addition to Bluetooth, there is also a 3.5 mm jack and a USB-C port for audio input or charging, which are sealed by a cover on the back. However, Teufel has unfortunately removed the power bank function for charging external devices via the USB port, which was still offered in the previous generation. Too bad.

Operation and battery life of the Boomster 4

The Boomster 4 is operated via a combination of tactile, physical buttons on the device, a clear but small display and a practical remote control, which is included in the scope of delivery.

The buttons can be used to quickly switch sources between AUX, DAB+, FM and Bluetooth, and the volume can also be adjusted in 32 fine steps. The two sound controls for bass and treble, which are directly accessible on the device and allow for individual sound adjustment, are particularly praiseworthy: the bass can be adjusted with one control, double-clicking switches to the treble control.

Operation is extremely intuitive, although I would have liked the contrast between the buttons and the housing to be a little higher. These are quite difficult to read. The pressure point of the buttons is also somewhat firm and narrow in places, which can lead to incorrect inputs.

The included remote control, on the other hand, is a rare luxury in this class and even allows direct access to radio presets four to six (the buttons only go from one to three). The speaker connects easily via Bluetooth 5.0, with aptX HD ensuring high-quality data transmission.

Particularly strong: the battery life has been significantly improved compared to its predecessor and lasts up to 23 hours at a moderate volume, which is enough for trips lasting several days without a power socket. Charging time via USB-C is around three hours. The only downside is the lack of the power bank function, which allowed smartphones to be charged via the speaker in the previous model.

Sound quality: Lively, powerful, rich in detail

The Boomster 4 deserves high praise for its sound. The sound of the Teufel Boomster 4 is one of the best in its category and has improved significantly compared to its predecessor. The 2.1 system with five drivers, including a large subwoofer and two passive bass cones, produces a rich, powerful but controlled bass that is precise and undistorted even at medium volumes.

Voices are reproduced clearly and naturally and, thanks to the two mid-range drivers, the sound is open and well-defined without sounding too muddy or strained. The tweeters ensure finely resolved highs that do not become unpleasant or sharp even at high volumes. The additional treble control makes it possible to adjust the sound to personal preferences or different music genres, allowing you to fine-tune the sound very well.

In practice, the Boomster 4 demonstrates excellent flexibility: with rock and pop music, the speaker impresses with clear guitar sounds and a wide stereo stage that appears lively and spatial thanks to Dynamore technology. Bass-heavy and electronic music is also presented with deep and assertive bass reproduction.

However, the speaker is not only impressive when listening to music: voices in podcasts or radio broadcasts are very easy to understand and the sound remains clean and distortion-free even at higher volumes.

Teufel Boomster 4 test: Conclusion

Teufel didn’t promise too much when they announced the fourth generation as “the best Boomster ever”. The Boomster 4 has improved considerably in terms of sound quality and battery life in particular and impresses across all genres and content with a detailed, excellent sound image.

In addition, modern features such as Multipoint, aptX HD codec and practical DAB+ radio function are used, resulting in an absolutely coherent overall package that is even suitable for outdoor use.

There really isn’t much to criticize. The fact that the buttons are difficult to recognize can be overcome thanks to the included remote control. The lack of a power bank function and a companion app don’t weigh too heavily either, so we can give it a clear recommendation to buy.
