ThunderX3 LAB-X test: The ultimate gaming table?

Today, an ergonomic workstation is more important than ever – whether you’re working from home, in the office or relaxing at home playing games with friends. The ThunderX3 LAB-X has recently been added to the range as an innovative, electrically height-adjustable desk. In addition to a large work surface measuring 170 x 75 cm and an integrated tempered glass mouse pad, mesh panels have been added at both corners. This ensures that the PC is also supplied with fresh air from below, regardless of which side it is on. The height adjustment range of the LAB-X is between 75 and 120 cm and is said to be extremely quiet thanks to the built-in motor. In addition, the memory function allows two height profiles to be saved, making it easy to switch between standing and sitting at the touch of a button.

The test will show how well the ThunderX3 LAB-X performs and whether the manufacturer has done justice to its focus on versatility, design and benefits.

Scope of delivery

  • Comprehensive accessory set with replacement screws
  • Table top and legs consist of several individual parts
  • Fully illustrated assembly instructions

The ThunderX3 LAB-X is delivered in two separately packed boxes. When unpacking, it is noticeable that the scope of delivery is quite generous and that the manufacturer has included some additional screws. The actual table top consists of four individual parts and the feet are made up of two elements. There is also a cable tray, a cup holder and a hook for hanging headphones.

The scope of delivery is supplemented by a range of mounting accessories such as M6 hexagon head bolts in various sizes and nuts including Allen key. To ensure that the ThunderX3 LAB-X can also change its height independently, a power supply unit and the corresponding controller are of course also included. The operating instructions are fully illustrated and concentrate on the essentials without a lot of text.

Structure

  • Helpful instructions with separately labeled materials
  • Assembly can take up to two hours
  • Precision work only required for cable management and controller

According to the instructions, the ThunderX3 LAB-X is assembled in 29 steps. However, the last two assembly steps are used for a brief explanation of the table control. Basically, it can be said that the assembly takes about two hours. If there are two of you, the whole thing can of course be completed much more quickly. Incidentally, no difficulties arose during assembly, as the assembly instructions guide you through the individual steps with informative drawings. The separately packaged assembly material, including labeling, is also helpful and saves unnecessary searching.

The first step is to assemble and attach the two elongated panel elements that will later serve as the work surface. The two side mesh panels are then inserted on both sides and also fixed in place. After connecting the two central supports to the underside of the worktop, the two table legs are attached to each side. From this point on, the central drive shaft can be fitted to transfer the movement of the motor to both table legs. Most of the work has already been done and the next steps include attaching the table supports and installing the cable holder, headphone holder and cup holder.

In addition to the numerous screw connections, the only thing that requires a little dexterity is the installation of the controller, including the correct cable routing. In particular, attaching the cable clips to the underside of the tabletop is a little fiddly.

Appearance & workmanship

  • Gaming design with mesh side panels for better ventilation
  • Flexible DIY system with customizable brackets
  • High-quality workmanship with stable stand incl. smooth-running motor

Visually, the ThunderX3 LAB-X looks quite appealing, although it tends to drift more towards gaming due to its dark color scheme. This is of course no coincidence, as the two mesh side panels are designed to improve the air supply to the computer through their openings, which is a great advantage for gaming PCs in particular. Another highlight is the integrated mouse pad, which is made of tempered glass and adorns the front of the tabletop. In contrast, the rear part, i.e. the area where the monitor is located, is kept matt. The cut-outs on both sides of this element can be used as passages for any cables or alternatively for monitor mountings. The entire table top therefore has a work surface of 170 x 75 cm.

If you want to get creative, you can use the aluminum frame of the ThunderX3 LAB-X and install your own modules. The cup holder and the headset holder are inserted into the side of a DIY rail and fastened with M6 hexagon screws. You are not restricted to a fixed position in this case either, which is why you can flexibly decide how far or close the two holders are attached to the body. This DIY approach can offer added value, especially for creative minds with a 3D printer.

There are no major flaws to be found in the workmanship of the ThunderX3 LAB-X. All components appear to be of high quality and the integrated single motor performs a noticeable but comparatively quiet service. A positive highlight is the controller including backlighting of the buttons, which is particularly useful in the dark. Fears of a wobbly frame can also be quickly dispelled – the table legs are robust and sufficiently heavy to guarantee a secure stand.

Functionality, operation & comfort

  • Flexible height adjustment with memory function and display
  • Integrated health mode for smooth, natural movement
  • Collision protection for more safety in everyday life

The ergonomic standing desk from ThunderX3 offers a successful mixture of sophisticated technology and ease of use. This includes not only the flexibly mountable cup or headset holder, but also the sophisticated controller on the right-hand side of the ThunderX3 LAB-X. All buttons are illuminated and a small display in the center shows the current height in centimeters. The height can be adjusted from 75 cm to 120 cm. In addition, the two buttons on the right can be used to save and easily recall two favorite height positions with a long press.

The middle control button activates the so-called health mode and the ThunderX3 LAB-X automatically moves gently up and down for a while. This movement is completely silent, i.e. the display changes, but practically nothing can be heard. The basic idea is simple: to encourage the user to change posture in a natural way, thereby promoting a healthier way of working. The vertical height difference in this mode is approx. 12 cm – so you don’t have to switch directly from sitting to standing. The ThunderX3 LAB-X also offers collision protection when lowering. If the table suddenly detects an object underneath it, it stops immediately. Anyone with a small child at home will particularly appreciate such functions.

Suitability for everyday use

  • Table offers plenty of space and is sensibly divided into four work areas
  • Tempered glass works surprisingly well as a mouse pad
  • … but is prone to fingerprints and reflections to varying degrees

Despite initial reservations about using tempered glass as a mouse pad, after a few days of working from home we can definitely say that it works wonderfully. Of course, this saves you having to buy a mouse pad as you already have a full-size XXL mouse pad integrated. The only disadvantage, or generally with table tops consisting of several elements, is that they react differently to fingerprints. In addition, the tempered glass part also reflects more intensely than a standard wooden or plastic tabletop.

When it comes to comfort and space, the ThunderX3 LAB-X has a lot to offer. In addition to the generously dimensioned tabletop, which offers sufficient space for monitors, peripherals and other accessories, the cable tray ensures organized storage. Cables can be easily inserted here if required, so that there is no cable clutter on the floor. Together with a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse, the desk really does look tidy!

ThunderX3 LAB-X test: Conclusion

The ergonomic LAB-X standing desk from ThunderX3 impresses not only with its stable construction but also with a number of ingenious features. These include the well thought-out mesh side panels for optimum air supply for the tower PC and the extremely large mouse pad surface made of tempered glass. Furthermore, the built-in single motor ensures audible, albeit fairly quiet, operation and the controller with memory function ensures a high level of user comfort.

On the negative side, there are hardly any noticeable weaknesses. Otherwise, there is a certain susceptibility to fingerprints on the tabletop, not to mention the stronger reflections on the tempered glass itself. Alternatively, better cable management could also be integrated, as the cables are quite exposed on the underside and could ideally be routed through closed cable ducts. However, due to the fact that the cables are attached quite close to the underside of the tabletop, the latter are hardly noticeable and therefore negligible.

In summary, it can be said that the ThunderX3 LAB-X has some strengths for its current price of around 500 euros and only has a few notable weaknesses. In this price segment, the LAB-X is an ergonomic standing desk that is visually appealing and at the same time makes gaming or working from home more comfortable with its numerous comfort functions.
