Optics & Workmanship

  • Portable handle for on the go
  • LED lighting integrated at both ends
  • Rubber cover protects outputs from dust and water

The speaker offers an integrated handle on the top to move it back and forth portably. The two passive radiators with integrated LED lighting are located at both ends of the speaker. The center of the housing is encased in a woven fabric while both sides are additionally protected by hard plastic. All control panels are located on the front of the speaker. On the back is the USB-C port for charging the device as well as other outputs. To protect against dust and water, these are additionally covered by a rubber cover.

Overall, the Tronsmart Bang Mini makes a solid impression due to its size and workmanship, and it also fits well in the hand thanks to the handle. This is also necessary, because with a weight of over 2 kg, the speaker is no lightweight.

Features

  • Playback of music also possible via microSD, USB or jack connector
  • 4,400 mAh battery with powerbank function for charging the smartphone

In addition to being used as a speaker, the Bang Mini can also be used as a powerbank when switched on. For this purpose, the USB port on the back of the speaker lends itself. In fact, the device comes with a 4,400 mAh battery, which can fully charge an average smartphone from 0 to 100% these days. An NFC tag is also integrated on the handle for faster pairing of the device. The speaker is certified according to the IPX6 standard, which thus also makes it interesting for parties at the pool. Occasional water splashes should not affect the Bang Mini. A microphone for making calls and the so-called stereo pairing feature, which allows pairing two Bang Minis with each other, are also on board. This means that a room can be filled with sound from both sides, for example. However, we were not able to test and evaluate this feature since we did not have a second Tronsmart Bang Mini speaker at hand.

For music playback, the Bang Mini can be paired via Bluetooth, the jack, as well as a USB and microSD port. Thus, the room can also be made to quake elsewhere instead of, as usual, being firmly dependent on Bluetooth.

Tronsmart Bang Mini test: operation

  • 7 soft buttons on the front
  • No app support

To operate the speaker with all features, so we have seven different soft buttons on the front. The battery indicator is also located at this point, which is visually noticeable via four LEDs. Starting with the power button on the left side of the device, the Bluetooth-typical functions Volume Down, Play/Pause and Volume Up are lined up one after the other. To skip or load the last song, just double-press the volume up or down button. Cool feature: Pressing the play/pause button twice opens the voice assistant on the smartphone. This is followed by the SoundPulse EQ, which is supposed to raise the music experience to a new level. The second soft button from the right puts the speaker into pairing mode for pairing with another Bang Mini. In the last place, there is also the control for the LED lighting, which can change colors according to the beat.

At the time of publishing this review, the Bang Mini unfortunately does not have any customization options in the Tronsmart app. This is a pity, as the big brother (Tronsmart Bang) can be used to set various LED modes in the app and also make better fine adjustments to the music via equalizer. Whether this feature was deliberately removed or will still be delivered later is uncertain in the meantime.

LED lighting

  • Different LED modes can be selected
  • Catchy effect for parties

The LED lighting at both ends are quite relaxing, unless music is actively playing. For this, we have two color modes to choose from: a breathing effect or circle effect. However, when a song is started, the colors automatically adjust to the beat, which results in a complete play of colors in many songs. This is definitely a cool effect for parties, as it results in a variety of color combinations and illuminates the room somewhat visually. Since the LED lights may not appeal to every person, they can be turned off via button as well.

Battery life

  • Solid battery life, which however decreases sharply under LED use
  • About 12.5 hours without LEDs, about 4 hours with LED illumination in the test

According to the manufacturer, the Tronsmart Bang Mini should be able to play music for up to 15 hours with the lights off until it should see a charger again. If the LED lighting is on, however, the playback time drops to 5 hours. We couldn’t completely reach this runtime in our test. With a continuous volume of 60% and the backlight turned off, the speaker was plugged in again at around 12.5 hours – with the backlight on, this was already the case after just under 4 hours. The Bang Mini easily does justice to usual parties with this runtime, but it is still advisable to turn off the backlight for long nights.

Tronsmart Bang Mini Test: Sound

  • Factory condition: hardly any dynamics, flat bass
  • SoundPulse EQ function, however, improves the sound significantly

Sound-wise, the speaker does not set any standards for its price range and yet you can sound very well with its features even medium and larger rooms. Impressive is the maximum volume, because the Bang Mini can really turn up!

The company Tronsmart advertises the speaker with an extraordinary stereo sound. However, this is only possible by activating the SoundPulse EQ mode. In standard mode, the speaker unfortunately lacks the necessary dynamics, which is why melodies often blur and come out relatively indistinct. Both the highs and lows do not offer balanced differentiation in this state, which can definitely tarnish the music experience. The bass is unfortunately quite flat and barely comes out. For a speaker of this size, the music therefore seems somewhat powerless.

However, the Bang Mini sounds completely different when you activate the SoundPulse EQ mode. Suddenly, the bass is more dominant and the sound changes for the better. The music has a much better dynamic and trebles as well as basses are now more audible, which mainly sounded washed out before. All songs across different genres offer more potential in this mode, which is why this option should definitely be preset as the default! Nevertheless, a touch more bass would be desirable for this speaker according to my own feelings.

Tronsmart Bang Mini review: conclusion

The Tronsmart Bang Mini offers numerous positive features in the price range up to 100 €. In any case, the very balanced sound of the speaker when the SoundPulse EQ mode is activated should be emphasized. When the function is turned off, the Bang Mini sounds quite flat and boring, so it would also quickly get lost in the mass of numerous speakers. Therefore, activating this function from the start is a must-have to unleash the full potential from the speaker.

The LED illumination on the device is a nice feature, but unfortunately this is enormously detrimental to the battery life. If you are planning a party through the night, it is advisable to additionally pack a power bank or optionally deactivate the illumination.

The Bang Mini is therefore ideal for medium rooms or as a loud party speaker outdoors. Tronsmart has created an appealing Bluetooth speaker with the Bang Mini, which has the right look and workmanship of the speaker and can also shine with a good overall package.
