If you’ve never seen a smart litter box before, you might not recognize the Litter-Robot 4 as one at first glance. Everyone else will likely be reminded of competitors like the MOVA MeowgicPod LR10 Prime (Review | Price not available *).

After all, Whisker draws on proven models both conceptually and visually. The device is available in either black or white. Its design features rounded shapes and a housing that blends unobtrusively into the living room. The manufacturer uses durable plastic for the material.

This not only keeps the weight quite low at just under 11 kg, but also makes cleaning easier. I’m not entirely satisfied with the build quality in some areas. For example, I noticed noticeable gaps between the individual components here and there.

This may not affect overall functionality, but in this price range, it really shouldn’t happen. A visual highlight is, of course, the LED lighting in the entry area. But the light strips aren’t just stylish to look at.

On top of that, they reliably help your cats find the entrance even at night. Speaking of the entrance—at just under 40 cm x 40 cm, it’s sufficiently wide. To ensure that even older or less agile cats can step into the smart litter box, the manufacturer has included a small, practical step.

Setting up and configuring the Litter-Robot 4 is a breeze. But first, a word of caution—before you throw away your traditional litter box and get too excited about this giant leap in technology, you should hit the brakes. It’s important that you don’t immediately replace your existing litter box with the smart one. Doing so will cause your cat a lot of stress.

On top of that, there’s a risk that your feline friends simply won’t use the smart litter box and will just do their business in corners or on the floor. Instead, you should start by using the smart litter box alongside the regular one and only replace it completely once your cats have accepted it and gotten used to it.

After a quick setup, all you need to do is find a suitable outlet. Then, pull out your smartphone and download the Whisker app. Use the app to scan the QR code on the back of the device and add it as a new device. Once that’s done, the app will provide clear, step-by-step setup instructions.

Now just fill the tray with clumping bentonite-based litter, and you’re ready to go. By the way, tech-savvy households will also get their money’s worth here: Through a Home Assistant integration, fill level, weight data, and status messages can be incorporated into an existing smart home dashboard and used for custom automations—such as notifications when the waste drawer is full.

The Whisker App in Everyday Life

The app is more than just a simple gimmick. Rather, it serves as a universal control tool. It not only displays litter and waste levels in real time, so you always know when it’s time for a new trash bag or fresh litter. On top of that, you can view your cats’ activity times here. The integration with the built-in SmartScale is especially cool.

This feature allows you to view the weight of each individual cat, which is especially useful in households with multiple pets. In fact, you can even track which cat used the litter box and when. This isn’t just practical—it’s also potentially relevant to your pets’ health.

After all, changes in litter box behavior or weight are among the earliest signs of health problems in cats. The app also allows you to activate a sleep mode that pauses automatic cleaning at specific times. This is, of course, especially handy if a cat is initially startled by the cleaning noise.

The drum lighting can also be controlled via the app. Despite the app’s benefits, however, it’s important to note that it isn’t necessary for basic operation. Once you’ve completed the initial setup via the Whisker app, the litter box operates independently—even offline. However, you’ll miss out on features like statistics, remote access, and push notifications.

Safety and Odor Control with the Whisker Litter-Robot 4

At first glance, the drum opening of this smart litter box looks like a huge gaping hole. During the self-cleaning cycle, the drum rotates slowly in a circle, sifting out the clumps of litter. Of course, this whole process can be scary for cats, which is why pet owners naturally worry about safety. This is where Whisker has a key selling point on its side, as the technology definitely impressed me during testing.

Using laser and weight sensors, the SafeCat system reliably detects when a cat enters the unit. If this happens, the cleaning cycle stops immediately. I tried it out myself and put my hand into the drum while it was cleaning. The self-cleaning cycle stopped immediately. If you want to play it safe, you can use the app to set when the litter box should be cleaned. By default, the litter box cleans itself immediately after use.

Using a customizable setting, you can also delay the cleaning process by up to half an hour after the cat has used the litter box. This is, of course, especially handy for particularly sensitive or anxious cats. Of course, odor is also a major concern with a litter box. This is where the Litter-Robot 4’s enclosed design really pays off.

Your cat’s waste falls directly into an odor-sealed drawer immediately after the sifting process. The drawer is lined with a waste bag, which makes disposal easier. However, when you empty the drawer—if not before—you’re inevitably reminded of what has accumulated there.

Daily Life with Two Cats

In practice, I found the situation to be more nuanced. My two Persian cats reacted differently to this new piece of technology. While my male cat accepted the smart litter box right away, my female cat still refuses to use the Litter-Robot 4 to this day. This makes it clear that Whisker’s smart litter box isn’t automatically a good fit for every cat.

However, cat owners are generally used to their feline friends having mixed feelings about new additions to the household. I therefore don’t want to hold it against the litter box that the success rate in my household is only 50%. Rather, I see this as a quirk of my cat’s personality. This makes it all the more clear, however, that you should definitely keep her current litter box available while you’re getting your cats used to the Litter-Robot 4.

A look at Whisker’s technical specifications makes it clear that households with multiple cats stand to benefit the most. The smart litter box is designed to accommodate up to four cats, which means you can save on having multiple litter boxes. It’s also important to note that the daily cleaning effort is significantly reduced.

All you have to do is dispose of and replace the waste bag at regular intervals and make sure there’s fresh litter. Occasionally, you’ll also need to give the drum a thorough cleaning to ensure hygienic operation. Even if, as in my case, only one of two cats uses the smart litter box, the cleaning effort is already noticeably reduced, since there is naturally less waste left behind in the traditional litter box.

Conclusion

In testing, the Whisker Litter-Robot 4 proved to be a technically sophisticated smart litter box that delivers great performance in everyday use. Cat owners who prioritize hygiene with minimal effort and have multiple cats in their household get a well-designed device that skillfully takes care of an unpleasant task. The control options via the accompanying app are also worth highlighting. However, the high purchase price and the significant space requirements remain the biggest hurdles. Furthermore, not every cat accepts the automatic litter box right away. Fortunately, Whisker offers a 90-day return period.
