After Samsung already renewed the NVMe lineup last fall, the Samsung 870 EVO is now also a successor for the still very popular SATA SSDs from the 800 series. While the SSD has not changed a bit in terms of looks, it looks a bit different on the inside. With a new controller and a new V-NAND, they want to offer even more performance. In the test, we took a close look at the 2TB version, which is available now at an MSRP of 269 €.
As already mentioned, the 800 series are SSDs in 2.5″ format that rely on the SATA interface. Despite the increasing use of NVMe SSDs in the M.2 format, they are still very popular. Samsung still relies on TLC NAND in the 870 EVO. The controller has also been renewed and the MKX controller, which was also used in the 870 QVO, is now used. The size of the DRAM cache has remained the same. The TBW values and the warranty period of up to 5 years also remain unchanged.
Compared to the predecessor, the values for sequential read and write have increased by another 10 MB/s, which means that we have now reached 560 and 530 MB/s, respectively, and the limit of the SATA interface will probably soon be reached. Furthermore, one advertises with high IOPS values.

In CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD, the 870 EVO can convince us, just like its predecessor. The SSD scores very well there for the most part and is usually in the top group of Samsung 860 EVO and Pro and SanDisk Ultra 3D. Here, the extremely small gaps between the individual SSDs also show once again that the SATA interface is increasingly becoming the limiting factor. We can confirm the 560 and 530 MB/s that Samsung specifies for sequential reading and writing, respectively. The 870 EVO also performs very well in 4k read, where it can even keep up with many NVMe SSDs.
Conclusion
On the one hand, Samsung has once again released a very successful SSD with the 870 EVO. We can confirm the performance promised on paper in the benchmark. The scores for sequential read and write are excellent, and the 870 EVO also scores well in 4k read. On the other hand, the performance is very similar to that of the 860 EVO, with no big leaps as expected. However, this is of course due to the SATA interface, which is limited more and more often.
However, you also pay accordingly for this performance. If you have a free M.2 slot, you can get some faster alternatives for the same price. However, if you want or need to use a SATA SSD, you can buy one here without hesitation.
