ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black Test – Simple CPU cooler meets strong competition

Behind the ENDORFY brand is the former SilentiumPC brand. It was founded in 2007 in Warsaw, Poland, and initially focused solely on PC components in the case and cooling sector. However, as the portfolio has since been expanded to include various computer accessories in different categories (mouse, keyboard, headsets, etc.), the manufacturer has decided to change the name from SilentiumPC to ENDORFY. However, the main focus in the development of new products remains unchanged: good value, good features and solid workmanship. Similar to the ENDORFY Fera 5 Black, the manufacturer has now also “blacked out” other CPU coolers in the portfolio. We have the new ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black for you to test today.

Packaging & scope of delivery

ENDORFY packs the Fortis 5 Black in a typically designed and compact cardboard box. This is made of brown cardboard and is printed almost exclusively in black ink. However, the manufacturer has designed a few elements in a dark blue-grey. In addition to a schematic drawing of the CPU cooler, the box also contains a table with the technical data and a list of the most important features.

Inside the box, ENDORFY has dispensed with unnecessary packaging material. The heatsink is protected by two additional cardboard boxes, in which the mounting material and the Fluctus 140 OS PWM fan are placed. Finally, a foam mold can be seen at the bottom to protect the base and the heatpipes. The supplied accessories include all the necessary screws, spacers, a mounting frame and a metal backplate, a small tube of thermal paste and four black fan clips.

Design & workmanship

Nothing has changed in the technical design of the Fortis 5 Black compared to the previous Fortis 5. The large and massive heat sink still consists of 47 aluminum fins, but these are now painted black. A black metal plate, in which the manufacturer’s logo has also been stamped, provides a clean finish and covers the heatpipes. Heat is transferred to the fins via six 6 mm copper heatpipes, which have also been painted for a more stylish look and rest directly on the heatspreader of the CPU (Heatpipe Direct Touch).

The built-in fan is of the Fluctus 140 OS PWM type, which means it has a frame width of 140 millimeters and nine serrated fan blades. Together with the FDB bearing, this blade design should ensure pleasantly quiet running. The fan blades and the frame are completely black and modular vibration dampers can be seen at the corners. Power is supplied via a 4-pin PWM connector, which also has a built-in Y-switch.

The heatsink and fan together weigh 835 grams. This makes it not only relatively large but also heavy. The general workmanship of the ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black is good but not flawless. For example, the paintwork on the lid plate and some of the aluminum slats was not perfect. Unlike the Fera 5 Black, however, the base of the plinth was flawlessly finished this time.

ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black Test: Assembly

A test system mounted on a benchtable is used for the performance test. This allows us to rule out factors such as heat build-up in the case. The test system consists of the following components.

Mounting the Fortis 5 Black on AMD systems is straightforward. After removing the retaining brackets on the front, the backplate of the AMD retention module could be prepared. To do this, a total of four spacers had to be screwed into the backplate on the front. The black metal retaining bracket was then placed on these spacers and secured with four screws. After applying the heat-conducting paste, the heat sink is placed on the CPU and screwed to the retaining frame on the mainboard using the retaining bracket and two spring-loaded screws.

The mounting system already worked very well on the Fortis 5. That’s why ENDORFY certainly thought “never change a running system” and only changed the color of the mounting frame. It has now also been painted black to match the product name. The mounting system is well thought out and allows the CPU cooler to be installed quickly and without frustration. The instructions are compact but clearly structured. Thanks to its asymmetrical design, the Fortis 5 Black is constructed in such a way that even with two fans fitted, there should be no problems with VRM coolers or high RAM heatspreaders.

Cooling performance and volume

As already shown in the previous chapter, we use an AM4 system based on the Ryzen 5 1400 and the ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus as test hardware. The Ryzen runs overclocked with 3.8 GHz at 1.175 V CPU voltage. To heat up the processor, we fully loaded it with Prime95 (Small FFTs) for 30 minutes in each scenario. We then read the temperature of the CPU with the CPUID hardware monitor and the room temperature was always around 20 °C during the measurements.

As can be seen from the table and the diagram, the CPU of our test system reaches a maximum of 88.1 °C (minimum speed), 52.0 °C (at 50% PWM fan speed) and 48.8 °C (at 100% PWM fan speed) under full load. This puts the Fortis 5 Black just ahead of the Fera 5 Black, but inferior to the significantly cheaper Arctic Freezer 36 Black or Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE. If you don’t have a high-end CPU or want to overclock heavily, the cooling performance of the ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black is still perfectly adequate.

The noise level of the Fortis 5 Black is highly commendable. Even at maximum speed, the fan is audible but not particularly annoying. Below 1000 revolutions it is barely audible and at less than 600 revolutions it is no longer audible at all. Depending on the CPU installed, it should be possible to create a silent system with the ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black.

Conclusion of the ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black test

ENDORFY has not reinvented the wheel with the Fortis 5 Black, but has simply colored an existing CPU cooler black. From our point of view, the mounting system used remains excellent, which is simple in design but can still be implemented quickly and ensures a secure hold. Furthermore, the Fortis 5 Black looks very chic and sleek thanks to its black finish. Another positive aspect is the very high compatibility with many sockets, some of which are very old, and the fact that mounting clips and decouplers for a second fan are included in the scope of delivery.

On the negative side, as with the Fera 5 Black, we again noticed minor processing and paint defects on the fins and the radiator plate. Another negative aspect of the € 52.27 * expensive ENFORFY Fortis 5 Black is also the price/performance ratio compared to the strong competition.

As already mentioned in the performance comparison, the ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black comes in just ahead of the €10 cheaper ENDORFY Fera 5 Black. However, it is clearly inferior to the almost €20 cheaper Arctic Freezer 36 Back and the €10 cheaper Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE. Ultimately, this makes it difficult to make a clear purchase recommendation, as there are cheaper and better alternatives with the Arctic Freezer 36 Black or Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE.

PRO

  • Simple look
  • Good cooling performance
  • Fan with wide speed range
  • Simple mounting
  • High socket compatibility
  • Mounting brackets for second fan included
CONTRA

  • Minor processing errors
  • Price too high in comparison

The ENDORFY Fortis 5 Black is a stylish, simple and easy-to-install CPU cooler that can basically cool well. However, the good overall package quickly pales in comparison to the strong and cheaper competition.
