Fractal Design Pop 2 Air RGB Review: A Worthy Successor with a Removed Feature

With the introduction of the original Pop series in 2022, Fractal Design hit a bullseye in the budget segment. The goal was to create an affordable alternative to the more expensive Meshify and Define models without compromising the brand’s signature quality. Now, the Swedish manufacturer is launching its direct successor: the Fractal Design Pop 2 Air RGB. In an era where hardware components are running hotter and airflow requirements are increasing, the new case promises targeted improvements in exactly the right places—even if Fractal Design has removed one of the case’s unique selling points.

The Pop 2 Air is specifically aimed at gamers and IT enthusiasts looking for a functional, stylish, and, above all, cool case without significantly exceeding the 100-euro mark. In this review, you will find out if the case lives up to high expectations and what compromises were made to achieve the attractive price point.

One surprising point is the absence of a printed assembly manual in the box. While this would have been considered a defect in older generations, the trend is clearly moving toward digitalization and resource conservation. Instead, the detailed manual is available at any time via the manufacturer’s website. Hand on heart: in practice, experienced tech enthusiasts rarely reach for the physical handbook anyway, as most assembly steps are intuitive or already known through online tutorials. This approach emphasizes the focus on the product itself and allows the attractive retail price to remain stable despite high-quality case features. You can find all the necessary information quickly via smartphone or tablet, which fits better into a modern workspace environment anyway.

The following materials are included in the bag:

  • 8x 6-32 mounting screws
  • 4x M3 mounting screws
  • 4x 3.5-inch drive screws
  • 4x Drive dampers
  • 4x PSU screws
  • 4x Cable ties

Thoughtful Design and High-Quality Craftsmanship

At first glance, the striking front section of the Fractal Design Pop 2 Air RGB immediately catches the eye. Fractal Design stays true to its minimalist style but enlarges the hexagonal mesh pattern, which not only looks modern but also noticeably improves airflow. A significant change from the predecessor concerns the flexibility of the front: while the first generation scored points with a hidden 5.25-inch bay for optical drives, this has been removed in the Pop 2 Air. This step may disappoint nostalgics, but it allows for a much more efficient front cooling setup. The material quality is above average for this price range. The case consists primarily of robust steel, and the tempered glass side panel fits flush without any unsightly gaps.

The I/O panel features one USB-C (5 Gbps) and one USB port. Next to the obligatory power button and the 3.5mm jack, we also find the controls for the fan lighting. The lighting can be conveniently adjusted via two buttons on the I/O panel if you are not using a motherboard with corresponding software support. The icons are almost self-explanatory, though a bit small. A quick look at the online manual provides more clarity.

The RGB version comes with three pre-installed Aspect 12X ARGB fans, giving the case a dynamic look. However, there is a minor criticism regarding the dust filters. While the top is protected by a magnetic steel mesh, the front relies solely on the case’s mesh itself to act as a filter. While this benefits airflow, it also means a slightly higher cleaning effort for the system’s interior. Nevertheless, the tactile feedback of the controls and the overall stability of the chassis are impressive.

For enthusiasts who value a clean look, the rear chamber offers sufficient space for cable management, even though Fractal Design has omitted luxurious rubber grommets here. Instead, well-placed cutouts are used, which serve their purpose functionally. Overall, the case feels like a cohesive unit and proves that “affordable” doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap.”

Ease of Assembly and Hardware Support

Installing hardware in the Pop 2 Air RGB is extremely comfortable thanks to the generous interior. A particular highlight is the new “GPU Air Guide”—a plastic element behind the front fans that directs airflow specifically toward the graphics card. In times of increasingly large high-end GPUs like the RTX 4090 or the upcoming 50-series, this is a valuable feature. With a maximum GPU length of 416 mm, you hardly need to worry about compatibility issues.

The case is also flexible regarding CPU cooling: air coolers can be up to 170 mm tall, which is sufficient even for massive tower coolers like the Dark Rock Pro 4. A real highlight for water cooling fans is the improved radiator support. Unlike its predecessor, a 360 mm radiator can now be easily mounted in the top, provided the RAM height does not exceed 47 mm.

Cable management is supported by Velcro straps and numerous anchor points for cable ties. Approximately 23 mm of space is available behind the motherboard tray, which is absolutely sufficient for tidy routing of ATX and PCIe cables. A small downside for enthusiasts might be the choice of fans: Fractal Design uses 3-pin connectors instead of PWM control. This means speed regulation must be handled via motherboard voltage, which is less precise than a modern PWM curve. Nevertheless, the Aspect fans perform reliably and remain pleasantly quiet at moderate speeds, though they are definitely audible.

For those planning a system with many hard drives, there is space for two dedicated 2.5-inch SSDs and a combined 3.5/2.5-inch tray. This is perfectly adequate for modern gaming setups that primarily rely on M.2 NVMe storage. The tool-less removal of the side panels saves time and nerves. When assembling, just pay attention to the positioning of the CPU power cables before installing large radiators in the top to avoid unnecessary fiddling.

A particularly noteworthy aspect of the internal layout is the tool-less mounting of 2.5-inch drives. Fractal Design uses a clever click mechanism that significantly speeds up the installation process for SSDs. Instead of struggling with tiny screws, the drive is simply pressed into the designated bracket until it clicks securely into place. In practical tests, this fixation felt remarkably firm and reliably prevents the hardware from sliding.

Performance and Practical Test Results

The Fractal Design Pop 2 Air RGB shows its true strengths in thermal testing. Thanks to the three 120 mm fans in the front and the open mesh design, the hardware remains surprisingly cool even under sustained load. Measurements show that a modern eight-core processor operates at about 65 to 75 degrees Celsius under full load, while the GPU benefits from the dedicated Air Guide’s fresh air and often stays below the 80-degree mark. Noise levels are classified as moderate. At a maximum of 1,550 RPM, the fans are clearly audible but do not produce any unpleasant bearing whine or rattling. If you dial the fans down to about 800 to 1,000 RPM, the case almost completely disappears into the background noise of the room without temperatures reaching critical levels. In our test system, the loudest fan was actually that of the beQuiet Pure Rock 2.

Hardware Used:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • MSI B550I Gaming Edge Wifi
  • Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 32GB (2x16GB)
  • MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Ventus 2X Black 8G OC

Test Data:

GPU CPU
Idle 44,2 °C 39,1 °C
Gaming 75,7 °C 71,3 °C
Benchmark 71,4 °C 65,6 °C

For gamers, GPU temperature is particularly crucial for maintaining maximum boost clocks. Here, the decision to sacrifice the 5.25-inch bays pays off, as the lowest front fan can now shove cold air unhindered into the PSU tunnel and toward the graphics card. Heat dissipation through the rear and the perforated top works excellently via the chimney principle. An additional 120 mm fan in the rear (optional) could slightly improve these values further but isn’t strictly necessary for most configurations. The Pop 2 Air RGB impressively proves that an intelligent layout is more important than the sheer number of fan slots. You get a system that is “out-of-the-box” ready for demanding titles and long gaming sessions.

Conclusion

The Fractal Design Pop 2 Air RGB is a consistent evolution of an already strong series. By ditching outdated standards like optical drives, space was created for modern cooling solutions and optimized airflow. The build quality is typically solid, and the integration of USB-C as standard in the I/O panel is a long-overdue step. Despite minor cost-saving measures like the 3-pin fans, the case offers excellent value for the money. The Fractal Design Pop 2 Air RGB is available now at an MSRP of 99.99 Euro, while the non-RGB variants start at approximately 85 Euro.
