SilverStone Sugo 15: Expensive ITX aluminum case in review

With the Sugo 15, SilverStone offers an aluminum ITX case. The case has a very similar interior as its sister model Sugo 14, which is also available. But does the Sugo 15 offer decisive added value to justify the significant surcharge compared to the Sugo 14? Our detailed review of the SilverStone Sugo 15 should clarify all this and more.

Technical details

The SilverStone Sugo 15 has been available since the end of 2020. The SilverStone Sugo 15 is offered in black and silver. Furthermore, the SilverStone Sugo 14 sister model, which is available in parallel, is quite similar.

Packaging and scope of delivery

The Sugo 15 arrives in Styrofoam very well packed. Already in the packaging are the accessories in addition to the case. Included are the following parts:

  • Various screws for hardware and fasteners
  • Several cable ties
  • Two different types of feet

The accessories are of average size. Different and freely attachable feet are worth mentioning here.

External impression

The case is made entirely of aluminum. At first glance, the gap dimensions fit and there are no sharp edges to be discovered on our case. The workmanship looks quite good at first glance.

Each side panel of the case is removable by two screws. The left side, top and bottom hide a magnetically attached nylon dust filter behind them. This is supposed to provide a higher airflow compared to the plastic filters normally used.

Due to the flexible choice of feet, there are a lot of possibilities. In fact, on each side can be mounted.

Next to the removable front panel, are the front connectors. Besides the typical on/off and reset switches, two USB 3.0 Type-A as well as one USB 3.0 Type-C port can be found here. Furthermore, a 3.5 mm jack is available here.

Finally, let’s take a look at the back. The Sugo 15 has three horizontal PCI slots at its disposal. Vertical mounting is not possible due to the internal construction. Since the power supply is located inside the case, an extension is used.

Rear

.

Overall, the case leaves a very good impression on the outside. Visually, the very simple and elegant design is convincing. The aluminum used looks high-quality and doesn’t show any weaknesses.

In contrast to the Sugo 14, the main differences are already visible on the outside. Instead of steel and plastic, the Sugo 15 uses aluminum throughout. The front panel is also not split. A 5.25-inch drive cannot be attached to the high-end variant. In addition, the front ports now have a USB Type-C port instead of the USB 2.0 port.

Interior impression

The Sugo 15’s interior looks tidy and organized at first glance. It is divided into an area for the motherboard and one for the power supply. The latter is to be fixed in the slot provided in front of it. If required, a 240 mm radiator can be mounted at the top and a 120 mm radiator at the rear. If two radiators are to be attached, flexibility in fans and cable routing is somewhat limited due to the space available. It should be mentioned that the top panel is removable, so a radiator can be attached to it without any problems.

As usual with ITX cases, the interior is otherwise quite tight. When a motherboard is mounted, it closes with little clearance from the surrounding partitions. However, mounting a tall CPU cooler and a GPU up to 330 mm long is possible. For this purpose, there is even a GPU support built in to reduce the force acting on the PCI slot.

A 120 mm fan is pre-installed in the rear as usual. RGB is deliberately omitted here. Theoretically, however, there is also room for a 140 mm fan.

If desired, another 120 mm fan can be mounted opposite the motherboard with the help of an adapter. The space behind the front is ideal for mounting 2.5-inch drives. For example, two SSDs can be mounted here. A suitable cable grommet is right next to it.

In conclusion, the interior leaves a good impression and high-quality impression. It offers a few nice features, such as easy mounting of an AiO or use of larger CPU coolers and GPUs.

System setup in the SilverStone Sugo 15

The following hardware is installed in the SilverStone Sugo 15:

CPU
CPU cooler Enermax AquaFusion 240
Mainboard
Gigabyte Mainboards B450 I Aorus Pro Wi-Fi Motherboard, schwarz
Price: € 195.00 Jetzt bei Amazon ansehen!* Preis inkl. MwSt., zzgl. Versandkosten
RAM
Graphics card Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti OC 4G
Power supply be quiet! Straight Power E9 power supply 480W CM
Data carrier Two 2.5-inch SSDs

As usual with cases of this class, the assembly should be briefly thought through in advance. This can prevent extra work or a more difficult assembly. In that case, it is a good idea to already mount the PSU and connect the necessary cables to the motherboard. Surprisingly, the 160 mm deep power supply fits into the case without any problems. Theoretically, even somewhat larger power supplies could find room.

Now the two 2.5-inch SSDs are already installed and wired in the front. In addition, the first part of the AiO is attached to the mainboard.

The radiator is installed using the removable bracket and then screwed back to the case.

Finally, only the mounting of the GPU is done. In our case, only an almost 20 cm long 1050 ti is installed. This leaves the power supply uncovered. In our case, we still turned the included 120 mm fan around for a more optimal ventilation. This is to supply cooler air to the radiator. For this use case, an additional filter in the rear would still be useful.

The Sugo 15 is an easy to fill ITX case with enough space, even for larger components. In return, it offers some cool features with a very good build quality. No issues were encountered during our system build.

Cooling performance and volume

The case features a pre-mounted 120 millimeter fan in the back. Up to five fans of 140 millimeters each can theoretically fit in the Sugo 15. Depending on the installation location and mounting of the feet, a good arrangement of the fans can always be made.

A fan hub is not included. Therefore, the control of all connected fans has to be done via the motherboard, for example.

At low speed, the already mounted fans are no longer perceptible from a few centimeters away. Even with this configuration trimmed to silence, the cooling of the installed hardware is always possible without problems due to the pre-mounted fans.

The fans are clearly audible at maximum speed. However, there are no strange noises. However, the quiet tuning is more than sufficient for 99% of all hardware configurations.

Everyday experience

SilverStone’s Sugo 15 stands non-slip and stable on black rubberized feet. Depending on the place of use, these can be flexibly attached to the case. The arrangement of the fans can be very flexible for this and thus allow a good airflow.

Visually, the case is very high quality and simple. RGB elements or glass are deliberately omitted here. Despite the focus on ITX, the modularity of the case allows most hardware configurations. Even somewhat larger ATX power supplies find room. Before choosing the specific hardware, the size of the elements to be installed should be taken into account. The installation should also be done in a well thought-out order to avoid problems.

Summary of the SilverStone Sugo 15

Let’s come to the end of the test. How did the Sugo 15 fare? The potential buyer gets a sleek aluminum case that can accommodate most hardware configurations. The workmanship is very good and we did not notice any sharp edges. Due to the cooling options, the case has good cooling with low noise in everyday use.

We were convinced by the SilverStone Sugo 15, but can we recommend this to everyone? Those who like the clean and high-quality look made of aluminum, need an ITX case with USB Type-C port on the front and want to pay the price can strike without hesitation. If you are purely price-oriented, possibly also want to attach a 5.25-inch drive and do not shy away from plastic, you can also reach for the significantly cheaper SilverStone Sugo 14.
