Scope of delivery
The scope of delivery is manageable but practical. All the screws required are included and grouped together in a larger bag – not sorted, but complete. Thermaltake also includes both disposable cable ties and reusable Velcro cable ties, which makes cable management much easier later on. An illustrated instruction manual guides you step by step through the assembly and helps beginners in particular to set up quickly. Three RGB fans are pre-installed ex works so that you can get started straight away without having to install fans separately.
Exterior impression
The Thermaltake View 290 TG has a clear visual focus on show effect. The generous glass elements on the front and left side provide an excellent view into the interior of the case and make it ideal for RGB-oriented builds. Both glass surfaces are split in two – the front consists of a combination of rounded glass and sheet metal, which gives the case an elegant, almost frameless appearance.
The Thermaltake lettering in white is discreetly emblazoned on the lower part of the front, which breaks up the otherwise simple design. The left side panel is made entirely of tempered glass and has a perforated segment on its underside that additionally supports the airflow – a clever combination of looks and functionality.
The top is perforated over a large area and is protected by a magnetic dust filter that can be easily removed for cleaning. This ensures efficient ventilation and keeps the inside of the case clean.
The I/O panel is located on the front right-hand side and offers the following connections:
- 2× USB 3.0
- 1× USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C
- 1× combined audio connection (headset)
- Power and reset button
The positioning is practical – all connections are easily accessible without disturbing the clear design of the top.
The right-hand side panel is much more restrained. It is made of steel and has a small perforated ventilation panel at the front to improve the supply of fresh air for side-mounted fans or radiators. Apart from this, it remains simple and ensures a calm overall appearance.
The back is classic and functional. The perforation for a 120 mm fan is located in the upper area, with the cut-out for the mainboard I/O shield below. There are seven PCI Express slots available, which can also be used vertically if a riser cable is installed. The power supply slot is positioned in the lower area and is screwed in from the outside. Overall, the rear remains unagitated but functional.
The underside of the View 290 TG has a surprisingly open design: a generously perforated area provides plenty of fresh air, especially for the power supply unit. The entire area is covered by a large magnetic dust filter, which can be easily removed for cleaning.
Four solid rubber feet ensure a secure stand, effectively damping vibrations and preventing scratches on sensitive surfaces.
Interior impression
The interior of the Thermaltake View 290 TG is tidy and generously dimensioned. Numerous cable grommets facilitate the clean routing of power and data cables, but are not rubberized or covered – an understandable compromise for a case in this price range.
Practical: The case is compatible with motherboards with a hidden connector layout, i.e. models where the connections are on the back. This ensures a particularly clean appearance in the visible area.
As far as the airflow is concerned, Thermaltake leaves hardly anything to be desired: The main chamber offers plenty of space for fans and radiators. The following configurations are possible:
- Top: up to 3 × 120 mm or 2 × 140 mm fans / radiators up to 360 mm
- Side (to the right of the mainboard): up to 3 × 120 mm fans / radiators up to 360 mm
- Bottom: up to 3 × 120 mm or 2 × 140 mm fans / radiators up to 360 mm
- Rear: 1 × 120 mm (already pre-assembled, ARGB)
This makes the View 290 TG ideal for high-performance builds with air- or water-cooled systems. Even large-volume AiO cooling systems or custom loops have sufficient space without feeling cramped in the case.
The rear chamber is functional, but rather minimalist. Due to the large cut-outs, the area appears somewhat “airy”, which can make cable management a little more challenging – especially when many components are connected. Nevertheless, there is still enough space to lay the cables neatly, especially thanks to the cable routing depth of around 99 mm.
The power supply area is located in the lower section, which offers plenty of space for cable reserves and is separated from the visible area by a solid cover. Directly next to this is a modular hard disk tray, which offers the following mounting options:
- 1 × 3.5″ HDD (can be inserted without tools)
- 2 × 2.5″ SSDs (alternatively also 4 × 2.5″ if the tray is reconfigured)
This means that the View 290 TG covers both classic storage solutions and modern SSD-only builds. Overall, the interior looks well thought out, offers plenty of space for high-end components and allows for a very tidy setup despite minor weaknesses in cable management.
Workmanship
In terms of workmanship, the Thermaltake View 290 TG is very solid overall and absolutely appropriate for its price range. The steel chassis appears stable, the individual components are firmly attached and the paint finish is evenly applied and resistant to fingerprints. You won’t find any sharp edges or unclean transitions in the interior – Thermaltake delivers its usual clean work here.
The accuracy of fit of the side panels and the mounting points is particularly positive. Everything can be removed and replaced without much effort, which makes assembly easier and leaves a high-quality impression.
One small point of criticism, however, concerns the gap dimensions of the glass elements: In our test sample, the front and side panels were not completely flush, resulting in a slightly offset transition. This has no functional impact, but visually it detracts somewhat from the otherwise very harmonious overall impression.
Apart from that, the View 290 TG impresses with a decent material quality, precise workmanship and a stable structure that does not lose any of its strength even after being dismantled several times.
Assembly and installation
Test system
| Processor: | AMD Ryzen 7800X3D* |
| Power supply: | APNX Max G1 1200 Watt |
| Memory: | Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 32GB 6000MHz* |
| Mainboard: | MSI MPG B650 Tomahawk* |
| Graphics card: | AMD Radeon RX6900XT |
| CPU cooler: | Arctic Freezer 36 Black* |
Mounting the Thermaltake View 290 TG is very easy and pleasant overall, which is mainly due to the spacious interior and the logically placed mounting points. All components of our test system – including the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the Radeon RX 6900 XT, the MSI MPG B650 Tomahawk and the Arctic Freezer 36 Black – could be installed easily and without any fiddly incidents.
The mainboard sits quickly in place and all spacers are correctly positioned ex works. The large RX 6900 XT can also be installed without any effort – the case offers enough space so that even longer graphics cards can be inserted easily. The CPU cooler with a real height of 158-160 mm (depending on the fan) also fits easily without bumping into the sides or top.
Thanks to the many cable feed-throughs, cabling is intuitive, even if the openings are not rubberized. However, this does not impose any functional restrictions. There is plenty of space for the power supply unit in the lower area, and the generous depth of the rear chamber means that even thicker cable bundles can be neatly stowed away. The included Velcro cable ties provide additional support.
The three pre-assembled ARGB fans are already fully wired, both power and lighting, and can be controlled directly on the mainboard or via corresponding controllers.
Practical test
Our previously described test system was used for the practical test, consisting of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the Radeon RX 6900 XT and the Arctic Freezer 36 Black as CPU cooler. The three pre-installed ARGB fans were operated in their standard state, without additional fans or special optimizations to the airflow.
In idle mode, the Thermaltake View 290 TG shows its inconspicuous side:
CPU: 54.0 °C / GPU: 59.0 °C
These values are within the normal range for a system with a glass front and standard fan configuration. The slight warming in idle mode is not unusual, as the GPU fans of many models only start up above a certain temperature.
Under gaming load, simulated here by a longer session in Battlefield 6, the temperatures rise as expected:
CPU: 58.5 °C / GPU: 76.3 °C
Thanks to the efficient 7800X3D and the Freezer 36 Black, the CPU remains clearly in the green range. The GPU reaches a completely uncritical value of 76 °C, which is absolutely realistic for a powerful system in a glass casing. The side air inlets do a solid job here, even if a fully-fledged mesh front design naturally enables a better supply of fresh air.
Overall, the practical test shows that the View 290 TG provides sufficient airflow for powerful hardware despite its closed glass front – especially when the factory fans are used unchanged. For users who want to further optimize the GPU temperature, the addition of additional bottom or side fans can noticeably improve the thermal performance.
Conclusion
After the practical test, the Thermaltake View 290 TG can be classified even better: The case clearly focuses on looks, but surprises with a thoroughly solid thermal performance – even with the standard fan configuration and despite the closed glass front. The measured values at idle and under load clearly show that the View 290 TG can reliably cool powerful hardware as long as you stay within the limits of a typical gaming or everyday system.
The temperatures of our test system – with Ryzen 7800X3D, Radeon RX 6900 XT and air cooling – remained within a consistently safe range. The GPU reached around 76 °C under gaming load, which is absolutely on target for a glass case with side air intakes. If you want to get more out of your airflow or cool the GPU even further, you can benefit from the many additional fan slots on the base, side and lid.
Overall, the View 290 TG combines a modern look, a comparatively simple design and sufficient cooling reserves for powerful hardware. Minor weaknesses, such as the non-rubberized cable outlets and the slightly uneven gap between the glass panels on our test model, only minimally tarnish the overall impression.
All in all, the View 290 TG is an attractive case for showcase builds, which proves in practical tests that it not only looks good, but also masters the thermal requirements of current gaming hardware with ease. For users who want to combine design, RGB presence and solid cooling performance, it is a convincing choice in the mid-price range.
