The new Western Digital Black SN750 NVMe SSD is said to be specially designed for demanding gamers. As part of the Black series, the SSD offers a new design as well as a so-called gaming mode in which latency is to be reduced even further. The technical data sounds promising, but can the WD Black SN750 also convince in our test?
Accessories
The SSD only comes with an instruction manual as a physical accessory. The WD SSD Dashboard program can display, among other things, available capacity, operating temperature, and SMART attributes. The software must be downloaded from WD’s website.
The SSD can also be ordered with a heat sink to delay reaching the temperature limit. The SSD provided to us for testing, however, comes without the heat sink.
WD Black SN750
Specifications
The WD Black SN750 is currently available in four different memory sizes in the M.2 2280 form factor. PCIe 3.0 x4 is used as the interface. Depending on the memory size, it should achieve a read rate of up to 3,470 MB/s and a write rate of up to 3,000 MB/s.

Gaming Mode
With the Black SN750, WD introduces an optional gaming mode that can be activated in the WD Black SSD Dashboard. After a restart, this is then available. The gaming mode should bring further advantages by deactivating the low power states, especially with regard to access times.
And indeed: After activating the gaming mode, the access times in the AS SSD benchmark improve by approx. 20%. Other measurement results are also changing positively. If you don’t care about the additional consumption of deactivating the low power states, you should activate the gaming mode.

Everyday Experience and Temperature
The WD Black SN750 1 TB has 931 GB of usable storage space after formatting under Windows.
As can be seen from the benchmark tests, the SSD is extremely fast in every situation. The speed can only decrease if the load is prolonged. Without active ventilation, temperatures of approx. 80°C are quickly reached. With normal ventilation, however, the temperature should not be negative in everyday tasks. Include the everyday task of extreme SSD performance, for which the optional SSD heat sink can be an option.
Result of the WD Black SN750
The WD Black SN750 with 1 TB tested here is an excellent M.2 SSD. On average, the SN750’s performance is roughly on a par with that of the Samsung SSDs. But the response time is much better – especially in gaming mode. Whether this actually makes a noticeable difference in everyday life, however, is questionable.
In addition to the convincing performance, the long durability of 600 TB and a 5-year guarantee speak for the WD Black SN750. In terms of price, it is roughly on a par with the M.2 SSDs from Samsung and is therefore no better or worse positioned than these.
