Gigaset is the only manufacturer whose smartphones bear the “Made in Germany” seal. One of the current models is the Gigaset GS195*, which we took a closer look at in this test.
Design and Features
Even before unpacking the GS195, the first peculiarity can be seen. The carton of the GS195 is based on a simple but successful design. This sets the GS195 apart from many other smartphones, which are usually packed in glossy cardboard boxes. Gigaset’s recyclable packaging is designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, which is certainly not the worst approach today. The contents include, in addition to the smartphone, a USB charger, a USB cable, a SIM card needle and a quick start guide.
The Gigaset GS195 is designed with the back of the smartphone in mind, made entirely of glass with recesses for the camera and fingerprint sensor. The GS195 therefore looks elegant and modern. It even looks slimmer than it actually is. The Gigaset logo is behind the glass. The front is almost completely occupied by the display. The only physical keys are on the side. There are two volume buttons and an on/off button, which can be distinguished from the volume buttons by a rough surface. There is also a 3.5mm headset connector and, of course, a C-USB cable connector. There is also a slot for two SIM cards and a MicroSD card. All in all, the smartphone makes a high-quality impression and, despite its size, fits well in the hand. Edges and corners are rounded and the GS195 feels very comfortable with the glass back.
Display
The GS1095’s display measures 6.18 inches and has a resolution of 2,246 x 1,080 pixels. Colours and contrast are consistently good on the large display. The sharpness display is also convincing. In sunlight, the display is also bright enough so that you can easily see everything.
The display also has a quite wide notch. In addition to the notch, there is space for displays for the time and various notification symbols if the surface is not used. The 2.5D glass should be scratch-resistant and dirt-repellent. In the test the GS195 could keep this promise so far, even in very dusty and sandy surroundings the glass surface did not carry scratches away.
Camera
The GS195 has a dual camera on the back with 13 and 5.3 megapixels and a front camera with 8 megapixels. It’s ideal for taking pictures in optimal lighting conditions. In less good light, on the other hand, the quality of the pictures suffers, especially in artificial light. Every now and then the autofocus is a bit slow, especially in poor light conditions the camera has difficulties to focus properly.
The camera application also offers various modes such as panorama or continuous shooting. Various filters and image corrections are also available. Overall, the GS195’s camera is sufficient for the smartphone, but not really outstanding.

Performance in Practice
The GS195 runs with the Unisoc SC9863A Octa-Core processor. Gigaset has built in 2 GB RAM and 32 GB internal memory. Both the RAM and the internal memory space are therefore rather small. The storage space can be extended by up to 256 GB with a MicroSD card. For the price range in which the GS195 operates, the hardware is alright overall, but still somewhat modest.
The performance is sufficient for most applications. Games like Pokémon GO or the newer Pokémon Masters are playable. Only during multitasking does the smartphone occasionally reach its limits. Then it takes a short moment until the input is processed.
The fingerprint sensor on the back is also quite useful. With it, the smartphone can be unlocked by fingerprint and the camera can be called up and released. Notifications can also be faded in with a fingerwipe. The sensor works very reliably and reacts quickly, only very rarely is the fingerprint not recognized immediately. The same applies to face recognition for unlocking the smartphone. This is usually quite fast and recognizes the captured face without difficulty. However, even here the light must be right, if it is too dark, the GS195 has problems recognizing a face.
All in all, the GS195 meets the demands of everyday life. Telephoning, chatting, surfing everything works without big problems. With demanding apps you have to reckon with compromises in performance, especially if you want to switch quickly between several applications.

Battery
The 4000 mAh strong battery promises many hours of battery life depending on use. In practice, the battery lasted just over 13 hours on the go before the smartphone switched itself off. During that time, the GS195 was used for surfing, chatting, taking pictures and battery eating apps like Pokémon GO. The empty battery is fully charged after about three hours. So the GS195 is a comfortable way to get through the day.

Operating System
Android 9.0 Pie is installed on the GS195 and occupies about 6 GB memory space. It should be noted that this is the pure Android version with the basic applications. There is no pre-installed additional software from the manufacturer. The setup is quick and can be done in a few steps. Only a Google account is needed to use the full extent.
Concluision
The GS195 can be described as an entry-level and everyday smartphone. The workmanship and the design are convincing. The hardware could be more impressive, especially the RAM. But you have to keep in mind that it’s not a high-end device. If you’re looking for a strong gaming smartphone or value outstanding photos, you should look around for other models.
All in all, the GS195 is a handy smartphone for users who don’t want to make too many demands on their smartphone, but still don’t want to miss out on the most important functions.
With a price of 200 Euro the GS195* is neither very expensive nor very cheap. Compared to models of other manufacturers with similar hardware, the GS195 is more expensive. But you get a Smartphone Made in Germany.
