Gigaset GS6 test: Design and workmanship

Simple, clear lines, well thought-out design: The Gigaset GS6 deliberately avoids fashionable experiments and instead focuses on a functional, robust design that is clearly designed for everyday use. It is precisely this approach that sets the GS6 apart from many smooth, delicate glass sandwich devices from the competition. Measuring 163 mm x 76 mm x 10.5 mm and weighing a whopping 230 grams, the device feels very sturdy and gives the feeling that it can be dropped from the table without the back or display breaking immediately.

The casing is solidly made, appears torsion-resistant and shows no creaks or pressure marks even after prolonged use. This stability pays off, especially in everyday working life or when frequently transported in a rucksack or bag. The pleasantly non-slip back ensures that the smartphone sits securely in the hand and does not slip off the table unintentionally.

IP68 certification, which offers complete protection against dust and temporary immersion in water, provides additional security. Rain, spilt coffee or a fall into a puddle won’t cause any nervousness here – a reassuring feeling that you quickly learn to appreciate in everyday life.

I particularly like the replaceable battery. In times of glued cases, this feature seems almost nostalgic. At the same time, it is ultra-modern in terms of sustainability and repairability. Anyone who wants to use the GS6 for several years will benefit enormously from being able to change the battery themselves without having to rely on expensive workshop visits.

High-color OLED display in the Gigaset GS6

For me, the display is one of the Gigaset GS6’s greatest strengths. In everyday life, the 6.67-inch OLED panel accompanies me in almost all tasks and consistently impresses with good contrast and rich, accurate colors.

The Full HD+ resolution ensures a sharp display, while the 120 Hz refresh rate delivers an exceptionally smooth user experience. This difference is particularly noticeable when scrolling through websites or apps and conveys a modern, high-quality user experience that is otherwise more familiar from higher price ranges.

With a peak brightness of up to 1,000 nits, the display remains easy to read even in direct sunlight. Colors are vivid without being oversaturated, blacks are deep and rich in contrast thanks to OLED technology. Videos and photos visibly benefit from the high color dynamics, while texts are displayed with pleasant clarity.

In everyday use, the fingerprint sensor integrated into the display also works reliably and quickly. Recognition is quick and precise, even with slightly wet fingers. A detail that is only really appreciated in daily use.

Features and performance

In practice, it quickly becomes clear that the Gigaset GS6 doesn’t want to shine on the data sheet, but rather impresses in everyday use. The built-in MediaTek Dimensity 7300 and 8 GB of RAM offer consistently smooth performance. Apps start quickly, multitasking works smoothly and even several applications running in parallel do not cause the system to stall.

The performance is more than sufficient for typical everyday tasks such as messaging, streaming, navigation and office apps. Even casual games run stably as long as you don’t expect top graphical performance. If you want to play intensive games, this is not the right device for you. However, this is undoubtedly not the target group of the GS6.

The 128 GB internal memory, expandable by up to 1 terabyte via microSD card, offers enough space for photos, videos and apps. A feature that is rare these days and is sure to find many fans. The extensive connectivity is particularly positive: 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, dual SIM and eSIM are fully integrated. In everyday life, this means fast data connections, contactless payment and flexible use with multiple tariffs. However, it is a shame that Giagset has removed the 3.5 mm jack input for headphones.

Benchmark Result
Geekbench 6 single-core 1,000 pts.
Geekbench 6 Multi-Core 2,766 pts.
Geekbench 6 GPU 2,501 pts.
PCMark Work 3.0 11,859 pts.
3DMark Wild Life Extreme 847 pts.
3DMark Solar Bay Not possible
3DMark Steel Nomad Light Not possible
3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress 99.6 percent

Gigaset’s approach to sustainability also comes into play: Production in Germany, plastic-free packaging and the use of green electricity. That gives the GS6 additional credibility, especially for users who want to consume consciously.

Gigaset GS6 test: Strong battery life, clear software

The battery life of the Gigaset GS6 is outstanding. Under the hood is a 5,300 mAh battery that easily lasts one to two days even with intensive use (including streaming, navigation and social media).

Particularly clever is the bypass charging mode, which protects the battery when playing games or watching movies on the charger. This feature shows that Gigaset is thinking long-term and wants to actively extend the life of the device. This is complemented by 30 W fast charging via cable and 15 W wireless charging, which makes everyday use noticeably more convenient.

On the software side, Gigaset remains true to its line: pure Android 15, free of unnecessary manufacturer apps or ads. This clarity is clearly noticeable in everyday use. The system is stable, clear and responsive.

The long update guarantee is particularly noteworthy: updates up to Android 17 and seven years of security updates are anything but a matter of course in this price range. If you want to use your smartphone for many years to come, this is a real argument for buying it.

Solid cameras in the Gigaset GS6

The camera of the Gigaset GS6 is clearly designed for solid everyday photography. The 64 MP main camera delivers sharp, natural images with a sufficient level of detail in good lighting conditions. Colors look realistic without being artificially overemphasized.

The 8 MP ultra-wide-angle lens covers a very generous angle of view of around 120°. In the test, it does what you would expect in this class: in daylight, it produces wide, detailed images that are ideal for sharing or for social media moments. In difficult lighting conditions, however, the camera quickly reaches its limits and tends to produce noticeably less detail and a lot of image noise.

The 2 MP macro lens is more of a gimmick in the system. It enables really close shots of small objects, such as flowers, textures or details that would otherwise be difficult to capture. In practice, it delivers passable results in good lighting conditions, but the resolution is limited and image noise is very noticeable in poor light.

At first glance, the 32 MP front camera is one of the stronger components in the GS6 setup. It delivers clear, well-exposed selfies with sufficient sharpness for everyday portraits or social media posts. However, the lack of an optical image stabilizer and some lack of detail mean that the quality of the selfie cam falls short of what would be expected given the sensor. Solid for selfies, but nothing more.

Gigaset GS6 Review: Conclusion

The Gigaset GS6 clearly relies on the strengths that also characterize the manufacturer’s other devices. Simple design, robust workmanship and a thoroughly coherent set of features with modern connectivity and some unique selling points such as the replaceable battery, which significantly improves its longevity.

Thanks to its impressive display and good performance, the GS6 also cuts a fine figure when it comes to media consumption, although the mid-range chip quickly reaches its limits with intensive games and the quality of the speakers could be better.

The GS6 is not a flagship and does not want to be. It is aimed at users who are looking for a reliable everyday device that won’t end up in the bin after two years because the battery runs out or there are no more updates. Anyone who values longevity, repairability and sustainable production will find a well thought-out concept here.

The weaknesses of the device are manageable and are due to the price: The camera is not outstanding in low light, the speaker sounds a little noisy and there is no headphone jack. The slightly larger design with a thickness of 10.5 mm and a weight of 230 grams may not appeal to everyone, although I still found the device comfortable to hold. The Gigaset GS6 is an honest, solid smartphone for everyday use. It doesn’t boast cutting-edge technology, but offers a well-balanced overall package at a fair price.
