Huawei Pura 80 Pro Review: Elegant design, high-quality manufacturing

The Huawei Pura 80 Pro has a very high-quality finish on the outside: With dimensions of around 162.6 × 75.1 × 8.40 mm, it has remained moderately flat despite its size, but is primarily aimed at people with medium or large hands due to its sheer size. The weight is around 219 g, making the smartphone easy to use in everyday life.

The back has a striking camera module that catches the eye and gives the smartphone a unique look. However, the Pura 80 Pro is quite wobbly on surfaces due to the large and high camera module.

Huawei’s choice of materials must have been deliberately high: the casing is solidly finished from front to back, with cleanly edged buttons, polished edges and a premium look. The build quality is outstanding, while the red model in particular stands out from the classic smartphone monotony.

An additional plus point: The Pura 80 Pro is IP68-certified against water and dust – for a modern flagship, this is a claim that signals a certain suitability for everyday use. In addition, Huawei uses highly resistant glass materials with (Kunlun) Glass on the back and front – which in turn offers excellent durability.

The scope of delivery of the Huawei Pura 80 Pro

Overall, the design makes a very coherent impression: the device is striking enough not to blend in with the crowd, but at the same time discreet enough not to look overdone in everyday use. The workmanship, ergonomics and choice of materials are generally convincing. The only minor drawbacks are the size and the associated handling for smaller hands.

The display: an absolute highlight

The display of the Pura 80 Pro is a real highlight: Huawei has installed a 6.80-inch LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 1,260 × 2,844 pixels (approx. 457 ppi). The refresh rate is variable and ranges from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. This allows the panel to be operated in a power-saving manner when static content is displayed and to switch more smoothly when movement is to be displayed.

The maximum brightness reaches peak values of up to 3,000 nits. This ensures a very clear, high-contrast picture even in direct sunlight. Color reproduction and dynamics are at the top level, with DCI-P3 coverage of 100%. The display delivers vibrant colors, deep blacks and a homogeneity that leaves little room for criticism. The variable LTPO panel in particular contributes to the fact that not only images and videos are displayed well, but everyday content also appears pleasantly smooth.

The quality on offer raises the panel to the level of current flagship competitors. Also worth mentioning is the factory-fitted protective film and the stable fingerprint sensor in the side power button, which works reliably and quickly.

Another plus point: the panel is rounded on all four sides (curved). This makes for an elegant overall look, if you like curved displays. There are hardly any negative aspects in the test. Overall, however, the display of the Pura 80 Pro is one of the best in its class.

Features and performance

Inside the Pura 80 Pro is a HiSilicon Kirin 9020 SoC, manufactured using the 7 nm process and equipped with eight cores distributed across three clusters. The power distribution ensures responsive everyday use: two cores with 2.5 GHz for demanding tasks, six cores with 2.15 GHz for standard performance and four power-saving cores.

The Maleoon 920 GPU is used as the graphics unit, which also delivers solid results in gaming and multimedia. The device has 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM and a generous 512 GB memory. Enough space for extensive photo and video files.

The connectivity features are also strong: dual SIM (Nano + eSIM), NFC, WiFi 7 (albeit without 6 GHz band), Bluetooth 5 and a modern USB-C port are available. Annoyingly, however, 5G is not supported in the German model. So anyone who needs fast mobile internet could see this as a major point of criticism.

Benchmark Result
Geekbench 6 Single-Core 1,272 pts.
Geekbench 6 Multi-Core 4,492 pts.
Geekbench 6 GPU 4,097 pts.
PCMark Work 3.0 9,818 pts.
3DMark Wild Life Extreme 1,688 pts / 10.11 fps
3DMark Solar Bay Not possible
3DMark Steel Nomad Light Not possible
3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress 99.5 percent

In everyday use, the performance runs smoothly, multitasking works seamlessly and even graphically demanding games run without major limitations. However, the CPU and GPU performance cannot even begin to keep up with current flagship smartphones such as the Sony Xperia 1 VII (our test).

Due to the US sanctions, the performance is more on a mid-range level. Anyone who wants to enjoy the latest games with the smartphone is likely to be disappointed by the performance. In everyday use, however, when streaming video or multitasking, you won’t notice much of this. Nevertheless, considering the price, this naturally has a bland aftertaste.

Huawei has also done a great job with the cooling. Even under constant load, the Pura 80 Pro heats up noticeably, but never gets hot or reduces performance.

Battery life

The battery of the Pura 80 Pro is specified with a capacity of 5,170 mAh (not charged wirelessly on the Pro model), but supports fast wired charging with up to 100 watts. The device is fully charged in just under 30 minutes with the included 100 watt power supply unit, and wireless charging is also possible with up to 80 W if a suitable charger is purchased separately.

In practice, this results in a good battery life: in test mode (mixed use of streaming, web, camera, gaming), you could easily get through the day. With reserves well into the evening.

The fast charging function allows the capacity to be topped up significantly in just a few minutes – an advantage that Huawei has over many of its competitors. Energy management and temperature control are very efficient, even under load the development remains moderate and the smartphone remains secure in the hand.

Software and Google apps

The Pura 80 Pro comes with EMUI 15 and does without native Google services, but offers convenient workarounds for Google apps. For example, the most important Android apps such as YouTube, Gmail etc. can be easily installed and used via the Aurora Store. The AppGallery, Huawei’s own store, is now very extensive, so you don’t really have to do without anything here.

EMUI 15 itself is clearly structured, performs smoothly and offers a wide range of contemporary functions, including a customizable always-on display, comprehensive security features and numerous AI-supported tools for photo and video editing.

Practical features include the “Best Expression” mode for group photos, which combines the best facial expressions from several photos, and special retouch functions that remove distracting objects.

Impressive cameras in the Huawei Pura 80 Pro

Huawei Pura 80 Pro

The Pura series from Huawei has always stood for impressive cameras, which are usually positioned above their counterparts from well-known manufacturers such as Samsung or Apple. The Huawei Pura 80 Pro also offers an impressive camera package at a professional level.

The main camera offers a 1-inch sensor with 50 MP resolution and variable aperture from f/1.6 to f/4.0, supported by OIS and an ultra-lighting concept that guarantees natural colors and strong details even in low light conditions. In addition, there is a 40 MP ultra wide-angle lens with f/2.2 and a 48 MP ultra lighting macro telephoto camera with OIS and 4x optical zoom, digitally even up to 100x is possible.

The results in daylight are excellent: color fidelity, dynamics and details set new standards, in direct comparison to the iPhone 17 Pro and other high-end competitors, the image sharpness and color precision clearly stand out. Particularly impressive is the macro mode with up to 40x magnification, which captures tiny details cleanly.

The selfie camera with 13 MP (f/2.0) offers autofocus and also records 4K videos and scores with realistic skin tones and very good detail reproduction.

A spectral sensor supports the main camera and significantly improves color reproduction. AI-supported modes allow the automatic removal of distracting image areas and the optimization of portraits. Video recordings are possible in 4K at up to 60 fps, with OIS ensuring smooth, professional results. Even when walking or moving quickly, the image remains stable and colorful. All in all, the camera technology of the Pura 80 Pro is one of the best currently available in the smartphone sector.

Huawei Pura 80 Pro Review: Conclusion

With the Huawei Pura 80 Pro, the manufacturer once again delivers an impressive smartphone that is once again at the forefront, especially in the field of photography. The focus of the model series has been on the cameras for years anyway and this expertise is also clearly evident in the new edition.

You get image quality that is currently among the best you can get in the smartphone segment, especially when it comes to photos. Huawei has garnished the whole thing with an absolutely elegant and high-quality device with a great display, good features and a convincing and fast-charging battery.

The lack of Google apps is no longer a major problem, as these can be obtained quickly and easily from alternative stores. However, it is a different story with other problems associated with the US sanctions: The built-in chip including GPU can only keep up with modern mid-range smartphones in terms of performance. The lack of 5G and the 6 GHz frequency band also tarnish the otherwise successful impression.

If this doesn’t bother you and you value good usability and excellent cameras above all else, you will be very satisfied with the Huawei Pura 80 Pro.
