Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ review: design and workmanship

  • High-quality workmanship
  • pleasant to the touch (Lavender Purple)
  • appealing design

Like its predecessor, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ has a curved design with rounded edges at the front and back. With a height of around 163 mm, it is undoubtedly one of the larger smartphones, but is extremely comfortable to hold.

This is also due to the pleasantly non-slip back of our test model in the color Lavender Purple, which is textured and makes the smartphone a real hand flatterer. With a width of 74.6 mm, it is slightly narrower than the OnePlus 12 (our test) or Nothing Phone 2a Plus (our test), for example, which further emphasizes the pleasant feel. However, the weight of 205 grams is not without its drawbacks.

The camera bump on the back, which is around 4 mm thick and includes three lenses, is positioned centrally. This is commendable, as the smartphone does not tilt when placed on the table. It is also surrounded by a silver frame, which looks very classy.

The rest is rather standard. The USB-C port for charging is located on the bottom, while the controls in the form of the volume rocker and the power button underneath are on the right-hand side. Xiaomi has integrated the fingerprint sensor into the display.

The workmanship is excellent and there is nothing to complain about. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ is also protected against dust and water in accordance with IP68. Top.

Xiaomi also provides the smartphone with a protective film for the display at the factory. Unfortunately, this is not perfectly applied in the area around the punch-hole front camera. At least on our test model. A slight damper.

Bright and fast OLED display

  • 3,000 nits peak brightness
  • High-color and high-contrast OLED panel
  • 60-120 Hz frame rate

One of the stars of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ is undoubtedly the OLED display, which has a diagonal of 6.67 inches and a resolution of 2,712 x 1,220 pixels. It is also protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has a refresh rate that adjusts adaptively between 60 Hz and 120 Hz – depending on the content.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+

The screen achieves an outstanding brightness of up to 3,000 nits for HDR content and around 1,400 nits for SDR images, making it very easy to read even in direct sunlight.

The screen scores with deep blacks, rich colors and excellent contrasts and naturally also has the necessary speed to handle the latest games.

Features, software and performance

  • Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 in the Pro+ model
  • Good system performance
  • Weaknesses in gaming performance

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ offers well-rounded and coherent features. Compared to the Note 14 Pro (without Plus), the manufacturer has also given the device a faster processor with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3.

The 8-core CPU is based on three clusters. Four cores calculate at 1.8 GHz, three cores at 2.4 GHz and one at 2.5 GHz. Nevertheless, the device cannot stand out from its predecessor’s MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Ultra in terms of system performance, but delivers a very convincing single-core performance. It also comes with 8 or 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of system memory.

In practice, the smartphone performs well, even with multi-tasking and computing-intensive tasks, and masters everyday tasks flawlessly. However, a few compromises have to be accepted when gaming. The results here are somewhat more sobering: The cheaper Nothing Phone 2a Plus, for example, delivers noticeably better results here.

Benchmark Results
PCMark Work 3.0 10,216 points
Geekbench 6 Multi-Core 3,242 points
Geekbench 6 Single-Core 1,159 points
Geekbench 6 GPU 3,300 points
Geekbench AI 792 / 827 / 1,278 points
3DMark Wild Life Extreme 1,052 points; 6.31 FPS
3DMark Steel Nomad Light 362 pts; 2.68 FPS
3DMark Steel Nomad Light stress test 97.8 percent

Coherent configuration with plenty of bloatware

  • Dual SIM; 5G
  • Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6E
  • Pleasant Hyper OS; but lots of bloatware

Otherwise, the features of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ leave little to be desired. Particularly noteworthy are the two built-in speakers with Dolby Atmos support, which are pleasantly loud and deliver a detailed sound.

The smartphone accepts two nano SIM cards, but is also eSIM-compatible. It also works on the 5G network, supports Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6E, where it achieves excellent transmission speeds. NFC is of course also on board, as are GPS and various sensors.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+

The operating system is Xiaomi Hyper OS based on Android 14. The manufacturer promises three major system updates and four years of security updates. Google’s AI assistant Gemini is also included, along with Circle to Search, AI interpreter, AI recorder and a few other nice games.

The operating system looks very tidy, but this is of course a matter of taste. I find Hyper OS very pleasant. However, Xiaomi packs a lot of bloatware into the system, most of which can be easily uninstalled.

Very good battery life and fast charging

  • 5,110 mAh
  • 120 watt charging speed, …
  • … but no wireless charging

The battery of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ is also noticeably improved. The smartphone has a capacity of a whopping 5,110 mAh – that’s even more than in its own flagship Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

Power adapter and protective cover are included in the scope of delivery

Charging is also extremely fast with 120 watts via USB-C, which is also flagship level. The manufacturer includes the matching power adapter in the scope of delivery. Unfortunately, wireless charging is not supported. Nevertheless, the empty smartphone is fully charged in around 38 minutes. Top.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+

The battery life is at a very good level, but cannot quite keep up with the top models. Even the Nothing Phone 2a Plus is more efficient in the PCMark Work 3.0 battery test. In the end, the Redmo achieved a very good 15 hours and 35 minutes – not a peak value, but very good for achieving one and a half to two days of battery life.

Good main camera, the rest… well

  • 200 MP main camera with good results
  • decent ultra-wide-angle camera
  • Macro lens barely usable; overexposed selfie cam

The main camera of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ boasts a whopping 200 megapixels. However, photos taken are downscaled to 12.5 megapixels thanks to pixel binning, which naturally reduces the file size considerably. If you still want to take photos in full resolution, you can select a corresponding mode in the clear interface.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+

Unfortunately, there is no telephoto lens. However, the sensor of the main camera allows a digital zoom factor of 2x and 4x, which is possible with fairly low loss – but of course this cannot replace a real zoom lens. A maximum of 30x digital zoom is possible, but the results are hardly any more useful.

There is also an 8 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera and a 2 MP macro sensor. While the UWW camera achieves decent results, the macro sensor is hardly usable.

Especially in daylight and good lighting, the photos from the main camera score with vivid, realistic and by no means overemphasized colors and a decent level of detail. However, when you get closer to the picture, the lack of smaller details, which you can still see very well in top-class cameras, becomes apparent quite quickly. The photos quickly become blurred, especially towards the edges.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ also masters night and low-light shots quite well. The image noise is limited and there is no excessive sharpening. But even here, there is a lack of detail on closer inspection.

The selfie camera has a resolution of 20 megapixels and delivers decent results, but they should be a little sharper and more detailed – especially in artificial light. The device also tends to be noticeably overexposed, resulting in flat, low-contrast photos.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+
Selfie camera

The video quality is okay. A maximum of 4K recordings with 30 frames per second are possible, the Note is capable of slow-motion videos with a maximum of 120 fps in 1080p or 240 fps in 720p.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ Review: Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ is a powerful attack on the mid-range smartphone segment and the best smartphone from Xiaomi’s Redmi division to date. Here you get convincing features including a fast chip, plenty of memory, very good battery life and a good main camera at a fair price. And all this in an absolutely appealing design with convincing workmanship.

With the exception of the wireless charging option, there is not much missing from the features. Thanks to the 120 watt charging speed, the battery is also recharged extremely quickly. Nevertheless, the Note 14 Pro+ is not quite at the top of the mid-range in terms of performance. Nothing and Co have shown what MediaTek’s chips are capable of. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is slightly behind here, but this is not necessarily noticeable in practice – apart from demanding tasks and games.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ delivers an almost completely convincing performance at a reasonable price, making the smartphone an exciting option in the price range up to 500 euros. However, those who attach particular importance to good cameras across the board will not be happy here.
