Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G review: The best mid-range smartphone under 400 euros?

With the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G, the manufacturer is once again sending a serious mid-range contender into the race. The new edition improves significantly on its predecessor in almost all relevant areas. After intensive use, it can be said that what Xiaomi has achieved here for less than 400 euros is remarkable in this price range. But there are also some weaknesses that you should be aware of.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G review: design and workmanship

The first thing you notice when you pick up the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is the significantly modernized case. Compared to its predecessor, the display is no longer stretched across the corners, but is now straight. There is also a flat, all-round metal frame, which immediately gives the new 5G smartphone more value. The display-to-body ratio has been increased to an impressive 90%, which is unusual even for the upper mid-range.

The black edges around the screen of the 163.61 mm x 78 mm x 7.96 mm Note 15 Pro 5G, which weighs 210 grams, are so thin that they are barely noticeable in everyday use. Xiaomi has also not skimped on the glass protection: Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the display. A material that is usually found in the premium class.

In addition, multi-stage shock absorption is used to make the phone more resistant to everyday mishaps. Thanks to the IP68 certification, the smartphone can even withstand an accidental fall into the sink or brief immersion.

The matte back of the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is available in three colors: black, light blue and titanium. Despite its size of 6.8 inches, the device is comfortable to hold. If you are looking for absolute compactness, you won’t necessarily be happy here, but you do get a really large display. On the other hand, if you are looking for a robust everyday device with a modern look, this is the perfect choice.

One small drawback: with bare hands and a little pressure, the back gives way slightly and makes a slight creaking noise. However, this is not really annoying.

High-quality display in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G

The 6.8-inch AMOLED panel is definitely one of the strengths of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G. The resolution is 2,772 × 1,280 pixels and thus slightly surpasses its predecessor. At 447 PPI, the display is razor-sharp. Text is easy to read and even small details in photos or videos are clearly recognizable.

The 120 Hz refresh rate ensures a smooth scrolling experience, which you take for granted after a short time and immediately miss when switching back to cheaper devices. At the same time, the screen scores with rich and accurate colors including a depth of 12 bits.

The brightness is a real showpiece: in everyday use, the screen reaches up to 3,200 nits at its peak or 1,800 nits across the entire screen, which keeps readability at the highest level even in direct sunlight. Outside in the summer in bright sunshine, the device can be used without any problems. At least I think so, since it’s not summer.

The DCI-P3 color space is almost completely covered, the colors look rich and vivid. In “Original Color Pro” mode, however, there was a slight blue cast in the test. Blue tones in particular deviate slightly from the ideal.

Features and performance

Under the hood of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultra. A chip that is essentially based on the Dimensity 7400 and 7400X and therefore does not represent a revolutionary performance update compared to its predecessor.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G

In Geekbench 6, the device achieved 1,054 points in single-core and 2,958 points in multi-core. Solid scores for the price range, especially as the GPU performance is also on a comparable level. There is not much to complain about in terms of everyday performance. Apps open quickly, the system scrolls smoothly and even working with several apps at the same time works without any noticeable hangs. Solid mid-range performance. No more, but also no less.

In terms of features, the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G impresses with a complete package: 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC for contactless payment and even an infrared transmitter for controlling TVs or air conditioners. Dual SIM is possible, with slot 1 also supporting an eSIM. The internal memory is available in three variants: 256 GB / 8 GB RAM (€399.90), 512 GB / 8 GB RAM (€429.90) and 512 GB / 12 GB RAM (€449.90). It fits.

The Wi-Fi performance is a small weak point: although the device supports Wi-Fi 6, it does not access the 6 GHz band. In the practical test, it therefore achieved noticeably lower speeds than comparable competitors. Anyone who regularly transfers large files via Wi-Fi will definitely notice this.

In gaming, the device proves to be a solid, but not exciting gaming companion: Call of Duty Mobile runs consistently at just under 60 fps, but more demanding titles such as Genshin Impact or PUBG Mobile reach their limits much faster. More than sufficient for casual gamers, but probably not enough for ambitious mobile gamers.

Strong battery life, fast software in the Note 15 Pro

The 6,580 mAh battery of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is a real battle cry. Not only on paper, but also in everyday use. Over 30 hours of Wi-Fi use and video playback are no problem at all for the mid-range smartphone.

Even in intensive gaming benchmarks, the Note 15 Pro achieves over 5 hours of display usage time, which is a very good value in this price range. For normal use, this means that two days without a charging cable are no problem, and even more with moderate use.

Charging takes place via USB-C with a maximum of 45 watts. Not a peak value, but sufficient for a quick top-up. The battery is fully charged after around 1:30 hours, with only around 43 percent of the charge level being reached after 30 minutes. Those who are used to faster charging, for example from other Xiaomi devices, will be served a little slower here.

On the other hand, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G completely lacks wireless charging. Nevertheless, the device can charge other devices via reverse charging with up to 22.5 watts wired.

On the software side, HyperOS 2 runs on Android 15, so Android 16 is still missing. However, Xiaomi promises security updates until 2032, i.e. for six years. HyperOS itself comes with some useful customizations, but these are accompanied by advertising, bloatware and more. The only solution here is the cumbersome uninstallation.

How good are the cameras on the Note 15 Pro 5G?

On the rear, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G uses two lenses and combines a 200 MP main camera with an 8 MP ultra wide-angle sensor. A 20-megapixel camera is added at the front for selfies.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G

On paper, the 200-megapixel main camera sounds like a real flagship feature. In fact, it is based on the Samsung Isocell HP3, a 1/1.4-inch sensor that was already installed in the predecessor. In standard mode, the camera uses 16-in-1 pixel binning and thus produces 12.5-megapixel images with larger, more light-sensitive pixels. The full 200-megapixel potential can be activated in a separate mode.

In good lighting conditions, the camera delivers decent results: Details come out well, noise is hardly an issue and even without a dedicated telephoto lens, digital cropping can achieve up to 4x magnifications in passable quality. However, the overall sharpness is only average. The level of detail in the photos is rather washed out, and colors are very oversaturated in places. Or completely pale.

The aggressive sharpening by the software is particularly noticeable: In daylight, edges appear overemphasized and fine structures lose their naturalness. This impression is significantly intensified in low light conditions. The images look noticeably smoothed out and reflective surfaces are sometimes sharpened excessively. The autofocus also quickly reaches its limits in low light.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G

The ultra-wide-angle camera is suitable for panoramic shots, but noticeably loses detail sharpness. The 20-megapixel selfie camera delivers good results at first glance, but there is a certain lack of sharpness in the details. The device records videos in UHD (4K) at 30 fps, with the main camera’s optical image stabilizer reliably reducing camera shake in everyday use.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G Review: Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is one of the most complete mid-range smartphones that you can currently get for less than 400 euros. The combination of an almost frameless design, extremely bright AMOLED display, a huge battery with over 30 hours of Wi-Fi endurance, IP68 protection, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and six years of security updates is unparalleled in this price range.

However, if you are looking for high-level mobile gaming or a camera that delivers photos with maximum naturalness and color precision, you will have to look elsewhere. The performance of the Dimensity 7400 Ultra is suitable for everyday use, but falls short of what competitors in a similar price range can offer. And the AI-supported sharpening of the camera software produces images that are impressive at first glance, but lose their naturalness on closer inspection.

If that doesn’t bother you, you get an otherwise complete and high-quality overall package at an attractive price.
