Logitech MX Anywhere 3 – Compact all-rounder in test

The MX Anywhere 3 is the latest model in the popular series. In addition to the typical convenience features of the MX series, such as multi-device connectivity and Logitech Flow, the mouse offers a magnetic mouse wheel and USB-C for charging. Furthermore, it can be used on almost any surface, including glass, thanks to the Darkfield sensor. The MX Anywhere 3 thus has the potential to be the perfect all-rounder, not only at home but also on the go due to its compact size.

We have tested the MX Anywhere 3 in graphite in detail. Whether it lives up to the high expectations, we clarify in the following test.

Scope of delivery

The MX Anywhere 3 comes in a compact black box, with a few features advertised on the back as usual. In addition to the mouse itself, the box includes a USB-C charging cable, a USB receiver, and a user manual. The USB-C cable is one meter long and rolled up with Velcro. Like other Logitech mice with a lithium-polymer battery, the USB receiver is not included in the mouse, but is in the box separately.

The scope of delivery thus turns out to be manageable, but offers everything that is really needed.

Design and workmanship

The MX Anywhere 3 is very compact and flat. It can be used ambidextrously, without special adaptations, for the usually right hand. Both sides are also slightly curved outwards towards the bottom, rubberized and also textured, so that the fingers rest comfortably.

There are two additional buttons on the left side, another one is below the clickable metal scroll wheel. By default, this switches the mouse wheel mode between line-by-line scrolling and free-running, but the button can also be assigned differently. While the line-by-line mode is very precise and gives a haptic feedback, you can scroll up to 1000 lines within a second without any resistance in the free-running mode. Besides the manual change via keystroke, the free-running mode can also be activated automatically when the mouse wheel turns fast enough. In combination with the side buttons, lateral scrolling is also possible. Furthermore, there is an LED underneath the middle additional key. This glows green when the mouse is charging, fortunately via USB-C, and red when the battery is running low.

On the bottom of the mouse, next to the sensor, there is an on/off switch and another button that can be used to switch between connected devices. An LED indicates on which of the maximum three simultaneously connected devices the mouse is active.

The mouse’s material quality and workmanship are very good. It is mostly made of plastic, which feels high-quality, as does the rubber coating on the sides. The scroll wheel also leaves a very good impression. The metal wheel is very well workmanship and also the operation works very well and pleasantly in combination with the texture at all times. At 99 g, the MX Anywhere is not particularly light, but we found the weight to be pleasant.

Software

As usual, the software relies on Logitech Options. The software enables the most important functions, such as swapping the left/right keys, adjusting the pointer speed and assigning the additional keys. These settings can be made globally for all applications or for individual programs. Logitech also offers the user ready-made profiles for browsers, photo editing, video editing, office and other software.

Furthermore, several settings for the scroll wheel can be specified here. The required force for the electromagnetic wheel and the scroll mode can be set, if you want to choose one. In addition, you can set how fast the mouse switches from line-by-line to free-running mode via the SmartShift sensitivity. The type of connection and battery status are also visible in the software. In addition to the red LED, a notification in the Windows notification center is also possible when the battery is low.

The MX Anywhere 3 also supports Logitech Flow in addition to these things. With the help of this option, you can easily switch between several devices at any time. The cursor can thus be moved over the edge of the screen, for example, and thus automatically switches from the PC to the notebook. Text, images and files can also be transferred between devices using Flow.

In addition to a Flow-enabled mouse, two computers on which the Logitech Options software is installed are required for use. Both must be on the same network, and the mouse must be paired with both computers. Whether via Unifying receiver or Bluetooth is irrelevant. After Flow has been activated in the software, the software searches for the devices and we can continue with the settings. We can now arrange the monitors, for example, or set whether the mouse automatically switches to the other device when we cross the border, or whether we have to have the Ctrl key pressed while doing so. The latter prevents us from unintentionally switching devices while working. A similar function is performed by the screen corner setting, which disables switching at least at the four screen corners. Flow also makes it possible to copy and paste text, as well as files, between computers.

Practical test

In practice, we found the size and weight of the mouse to be very good. Due to the small dimensions, the MX Anywhere 3 is especially suitable for on the go, but the mouse also pleased at home at the desk. Thanks to the Darkfield sensor, the mouse also works very well on all surfaces, whether on a wooden desk, on glass or even on the sofa.

Besides the sensor, the pressure point and the clicking noise of the buttons also left a very good impression. Furthermore, the scroll wheel could also convince us in terms of workmanship and functionality and turned out to be a highlight of the MX Anywhere 3. The two different modes proved to be very practical, the freewheel was especially advantageous when working with larger Excel spreadsheets. The automatic switching also worked very reliably. Logitech Flow also proved to be an advantage again and again when working and saved us time and effort. The feature was set up quickly and worked reliably at all times afterwards.

We cannot make a statement about the battery life because the Logitech Options software does not show an exact value for the battery state. Within the last 2 weeks, we used the mouse for 8-10 hours a day during the week, less on weekends. However, a charging process has not been necessary for a long time yet.

Overall, the MX Anywhere 3 can convince us. The mouse is very well workmanship, offers many practical features and is very suitable for on the go due to its small size.

Conclusion

The Logitech MX Anywhere 3 leaves a very good impression in the test. The compact mouse convinces with high material quality and very good workmanship. It is also technically appealing with its Darkfield sensor, sufficient additional buttons and the magnetic scroll wheel including two different scroll modes. Additionally, Logitech Flow and the general connection of up to three devices offer practical features that can further facilitate the work routine. The battery life and the USB-C port are also positive. The price is relatively high for a portable mouse, but it is justified by the mentioned factors.

If you are looking for a compact and very well-made mouse, you should definitely take a closer look at the MX Anywhere 3.
