ADATA SE770G – external RGB-SSD in test

ADATA – known for various forms of storage media – brings a high-performance, illuminated SSD to the market with the SE770G. Optics and performance are combined here – can that work well?

ADATA advertises 1000 MB/s read rate and 800 MB/s write rate, and the SSD is available in 512 GB as well as 1 TB. These are remarkable values for an external SSD – the SSD is connected via USB 3.2 Gen 2 – the port is thus almost completely utilized. We tested the 512 GB version to see if the SSD can reach these values.

Lighted SSD as an eye-catcher

High-performance SSDs – internal as well as external – are becoming more widely available. Something new is needed to freshen up the market. This is what ADATA is trying to do by giving the SSD some RGB and making it an eye-catcher. There is no software to control the lighting, but the color changes constantly, similar to a rainbow effect of common ARGB controllers.

Turned off, the SSD is inconspicuous, but when the SSD is connected to the PC, the cube pattern lights up. The SSD thus stands out despite its compact size.

With 136 grams, the case is quite heavy – but it also looks very valuable as a result. On the bottom are some grooves that remind of a heat sink, additionally there are some holes on the outside – these serve to cool the SSD.

Besides the SSD, there is a manual and two cables in the box. It’s nice that a USB-A connection cable is used in addition to the USB-C one. Thus, the SSD is compatible with almost every PC (and console) – to achieve the maximum performance, of course, you have to make sure that a USB 3.2 Gen2 port is used. If this is not available, the SSD can of course also be used on older ports.

Test system

The following system is used for the following test:

Performance – also to look at?

In addition to the appearance, of course, the performance is also important. What good is RGB to us if the performance is not right? We put the external SSD through a course of various benchmarks to be able to compare the performance against other SSDs.

In a direct comparison with the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2, which uses the same USB 3.2 Gen2 interface, we see that they go head-to-head. However, the ADATA SE770G clearly wins in longer write/read processes. This is particularly noticeable in the HD Tune Pro.

The specified values can be roughly maintained in the Crystal Disk Mark and are thus fully within expectations. USB 3.2 Gen 2 is very close to the realistic maximum with these rates – we won’t be able to expect great performance leaps. The next upgrade would be USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (e.g. the ADATA SE900G) – but the standard has not yet fully penetrated the market. Even our test system, which is based on the current AMD B550 chipset, does not yet have one of these ports.

Conclusion

The ADATA SE770G is an SSD that wants to set itself apart from other external SSDs. The performance of the current top products is becoming more and more similar, so other features are needed. ADATA chooses the RGB way. So, if you want a high-quality manufactured external SSD, which is chicly illuminated and also scores well to very well in terms of performance, the SE770G is a good choice.

However, as it is always the case with RGB products, the SSD comes with a surcharge. And this cannot be ignored – because at the time of testing, the SE770G with 512 GB is about 10 € more expensive than the SanDisk Extreme Portable V2 and is about the same as the Teamgroup PD1000 – but both competitors offer IP certifications.  No matter how we spin it, the advantage is weightier in reality than RGB lighting.

Nevertheless, we think that the SE770G has its right to exist. Especially if the lighting appeals to you and you possibly find the SSD on offer, it is definitely worth considering.
