There was a time when 240 Hz simply wasn’t an option for affordable gaming monitors. The AOC Gaming Q27G4ZR now significantly lowers this barrier to entry, and that’s exactly what makes it one of the most exciting value-for-money devices in the current 27-inch class, in my opinion. With a street price starting at around 192 euros, it offers a combination of QHD resolution, a high refresh rate, and a surprisingly bright display—features that are anything but a given in this price range. Design and Build Quality
With the Q27G4ZR, AOC stays true to the proven design approach of its gaming series, and that’s certainly no drawback here. The monitor features the same solid build quality and craftsmanship typically found in the brand’s more expensive models. Virtually all visible components are made of plastic—the housing, back panel, and all bezels. This ensures sufficient rigidity while keeping the weight low at 5.32 kg, including the stand. It doesn’t feel premium, but at a price under 200 euros, it’s hard to justify any criticism.
Visually, black dominates, accented by a few subtle red details: the red cable pass-through hole and the red circle where the stand meets the panel. I would have liked to see a few more of these design touches on the main housing, but that would probably have been too flashy. The front bezel is frameless on three sides and has a matte finish.
There’s nothing to complain about when it comes to ergonomics. The base, neck, and panel snap together without tools. The stand offers 130 mm of height adjustment, ±90° pivot, ±28° swivel, and a tilt range of about 24°. This makes it easy to position the monitor exactly as you want it in your setup, and if you prefer to use a wall mount, you can quickly install one thanks to the 100×100-mm VESA mount. The stand, developed in collaboration with eSports professionals, is also designed to minimize the footprint on your desk.
I’m less impressed with the cable management. The hexagonal shape of the monitor neck makes a central cable pass-through impossible, which is why AOC has instead incorporated two offset cutouts on the sides. The result doesn’t look particularly tidy, and the red accents on the cutouts tend to draw even more attention to the cabling. Interestingly, the reviewer from Creative Bloq specifically praises the cable management—so opinions differ here, likely depending on one’s own standards for tidiness.
Specs & Features
At its heart is a 27-inch Fast-IPS panel with native QHD resolution (2560×1440), which works out to about 109 pixels per inch at this screen size. This keeps the image pleasantly sharp—sharper, by the way, than a 24-inch Full HD alternative with 92 PPI, and I consider the extra cost for this more detailed image money well spent. The native refresh rate of 240 Hz can be boosted to 260 Hz via built-in overclocking.
In terms of ports, AOC includes one DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 ports. However, there’s a detail hidden here that you should be aware of: Only the DisplayPort drives the panel at full refresh rate via Display Stream Compression (DSC), while the HDMI ports are capped at 144 Hz (according to AOC’s specifications, even 144 Hz—or 120 Hz for consoles). HDMI 2.1 would have boosted all three ports to 240 Hz, but it would have increased manufacturing costs—so omitting it to keep the price down is understandable. The monitor uses a C13 power connector with an internal power supply, eliminating the need for a bulky external power adapter. It also features a 3.5-mm jack output for a headset or speakers via HDMI audio pass-through.
The two built-in 2-W speakers are no substitute for decent bookshelf speakers or a headset. They lack bass, and the sound comes across as tinny. However, they’re sufficient for YouTube videos or Windows notifications. What’s clearly missing is a USB hub. In my view, this is more of a “nice-to-have” than a must-have, especially for a budget monitor, but there are similarly priced alternatives that offer such ports—though usually with a lower refresh rate. So it comes down to a question of priorities: ports or panel? I lean toward the panel.
For variable refresh rates, AOC relies on Adaptive Sync without official AMD or Nvidia branding; the manufacturer nevertheless lists the device as G-Sync Compatible. In my test with G-Sync enabled, everything worked flawlessly and delivered a pleasantly tear-free experience in the 48–240 Hz range. HDR is supported via VESA DisplayHDR 400.
Controls and OSD
The OSD controls are located at the bottom of the AOC Q27G4ZR in the form of five buttons. And no, unfortunately, there’s no joystick. The ease of use is okay, but could be better. AOC has printed the corresponding icons on the bezel, but this only helps in a well-lit room—they’re not visible in the dark. As with earlier AOC models, I’d like to see a switch to joystick controls here; until then, the G-Menu software serves as a useful alternative, allowing you to conveniently configure the monitor from your PC. If you want to create profiles for different workflows, you can do so with minimal effort.
Aside from overclocking to 260 Hz, there’s really no need to delve into the deeper menus, as the factory settings are solid. A practical tip: It’s worth using the reset function to bring up the power-saving pop-up again if you missed it the first time.
If you skip the efficiency measures, the screen brightness increases significantly. I really like the brackets for the sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces, as well as the extensive selection of image controls for fine-tuning. In addition, the OSD offers a crosshair and a frame counter—features I’ve never personally used, but which competitive gamers are likely to appreciate.
Image Quality of the AOC Q27G4ZR
In practice, you can feel the advantages of the 240-Hz panel over 60 or 120 Hz across all games, but most noticeably in first-person shooters. During sessions lasting several hours in The Finals, Fortnite, and Rainbow Six Siege at 240 fps, the low frame times reduce input lag and ensure faster responsiveness, while the improved motion sharpness makes it easier to track targets. AOC sets Overdrive to “Normal” by default; I was able to use the “Fast” and “Faster” settings without visible artifacts, but “Fastest” goes a step too far and causes noticeable inverse ghosting. My advice: Stick with “Standard” for most games and only switch to “Fast” or “Faster” in competitive titles where you can reliably maintain 240 fps.
When it comes to colors, the panel isn’t the most vibrant LCD I’ve seen, but it does a pretty good job of rendering the colorful watercolor-like look of strategy games like League of Legends. Don’t read too much into the DisplayHDR 400 certification: Since the panel lacks local dimming, it doesn’t deliver a compelling HDR experience. For true HDR, there’s no getting around Mini-LED or OLED. A peak brightness of 400 nits is the absolute minimum most HDR users would expect. However, this criticism applies to nearly all displays in this price range, and the SDR performance remains strong.
For creatives, the monitor is definitely worth considering: no issues with distortion or accuracy, even at the outer edges, and a reliable, vibrant picture. Those working in video, animation, or motion graphics will particularly benefit from the smooth motion rendering. Color graders and photo retouchers, however, need a wider color gamut than this device can reliably provide.
Lab Test
In the lab, the AOC Q27G4ZR delivers mixed results, though it’s generally impressive. It provides full sRGB coverage, but its DCI-P3 coverage of 86% places it in the middle of the pack; Adobe RGB coverage is correspondingly low at 80%. Comparable IPS panels in this price range often achieve 90% or more—so this panel’s coverage is comparatively limited. AOC itself reports higher values based on the CIE 1976 method (123.6% sRGB, 95.2% DCI-P3, 91.4% Adobe RGB), which reflects the differences in measurement methods.
In terms of color accuracy, however, the device impresses: An average Delta E of 0.72 is an excellent result and ranks among the best measured in this class. A single blue cast pushes the maximum value to 2.27, but the second-highest outlier is an impressive 0.94. This isn’t noticeable in everyday use.
The brightness is truly impressive: a peak of 440.1 nits is far higher than that of other panels in the 150–250 euro range and significantly improves usability in bright rooms. When it comes to contrast, however, the IPS technology can’t work miracles: 1,050:1 is decent for IPS, but a VA panel is clearly superior here. Black levels rise to as high as 0.45 nits, which makes dark areas of the image appear grayish—a typical problem with all backlit displays except for expensive Mini-LED devices.
In terms of uniformity, the test unit performs decently but isn’t flawless: there is visible IPS bleeding, especially on the left and bottom-left, with luminance deviations of up to 15%. Color uniformity is better across almost the entire screen; the peak value of 4.3 in the corners is barely noticeable in real-world use.
Power consumption, at 16–38 W (AOC lists a typical value of 30 W), is slightly higher than that of other LCDs tested, but remains well below the power consumption of QD-OLED screens, which, according to measurements, start at 56 W.
AOC Q27G4ZR Review: Conclusion
After spending an extended period of time with the AOC Q27G4ZR, I’ve come to a firm conclusion: For around 192 to 200 euros, this monitor offers one of the best values on the market when it comes to QHD monitors with a 240 Hz refresh rate. The Fast-IPS panel outperforms numerous cheaper VA alternatives in terms of brightness and responsiveness, and both gamers and creatives who also play games will find this to be a well-rounded package.
The compromises (narrow color gamut, lack of a USB hub, mediocre HDR, and slight uniformity issues) are acceptable in this price range, and none of them detract from the overall package. For a successor, I’d like to see broader color gamut coverage and more uniform luminance.
