ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE review: design and build quality
The ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE makes it unmistakably clear at first glance that we are dealing with an enhanced version of the Falchion Ace HFX (our review). More grown-up, more modern and also larger, the new keyboard uses the currently very popular 75 percent layout (instead of 65%).
In contrast to 60 or 65 percent keyboards, dedicated arrow keys and a complete upper row of F-keys are retained here, which makes the switch particularly pleasant for frequent typists and strategic gamers.
As is typical for ROG, the workmanship is at an absolute premium level. The case appears solid, torsion-resistant and excellently insulated. ASUS relies internally on a multi-layered damping concept with a total of six layers of PORON foam, silicone and sound-absorbing materials. This construction effectively reduces resonances and ensures a controlled, rich sound character that clearly stands out from many hollow gaming keyboards. Even with a hard stroke, the board remains pleasantly restrained acoustically.
The PBT keycaps are double-injected, pleasant to the touch and resistant to gloss formation – even after prolonged use. The lettering is, as is typical for the manufacturer, once again very futuristic. You have to like it… or replace it, which is of course no problem thanks to the hot-swap capability.
Of course, the ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE should not be without detailed, customizable RGB lighting, which is perfectly integrated here. As with the smaller model, there are various buttons and features on the top. These include a quick-release toggle (for Rapid Trigger), a pleasantly grained scroll wheel and a multifunction button on the upper left edge, which, in combination with the touch panel (which takes up the entire top), enables the control of volume, media playback, lighting effects and individual commands, for example.
Practical: The integrated LED light bar above the row of F buttons shows which functions have been set and to what extent.
The only point of criticism in the design area is that the keyboard can only be used wired. Wireless operation is not even considered, which I consider somewhat questionable in this price range. But well.
ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE with top features
In terms of features, the ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE is currently one of the most technically exciting keyboards on the market. At its heart are the new ROG HFX V2 and V2X Hall Effect switches, which operate magnetically and are therefore completely wear-free. The decisive advantage lies in the extremely fine adjustability of the trigger point: this can be configured between 0.1 mm and 3.5 mm in 0.01 mm increments. In practice, this allows for an adjustment that can be precisely matched to the game genre, personal preferences or even individual keys.
- What are the differences between ROG HFX V2 and ROG HFX V2X? Both switch variants differ primarily in terms of their trigger feel. The HFX V2 offers an actuation force of 32 gf and a total force of 49 gf. The ROG HFX V2X, on the other hand, is somewhat softer at 30 gf and 45 gf respectively.
The Falchion Ace 75 HE offers everything you would expect from a magnetic Hall-effect keyboard. The Rapid Trigger function is particularly noteworthy. It ensures that a key is reset as soon as it is released. An enormous advantage in fast-paced shooters or action games. In combination with the extremely high polling rate of up to 8,000 Hz, this results in an input behavior that feels measurably and subjectively faster than with classic mechanical keyboards.
ASUS complements this technology with physical controls. An integrated touch panel on the side allows quick adjustments to volume, media control or RGB effects without having to leave the game. Profiles and trigger settings can also be changed directly on the keyboard.
The only problem with the switches is the same one that all reverb effect keyboards suffer from: The magnetic switches are proprietary. There is currently no provision for free replacement with third-party switches, which is likely to restrict modding fans. For the target group of competitive gamers, however, this point is of secondary importance.
App connection: Gear Link in the browser
Instead of classic desktop software, ASUS relies on the web-based ROG Gear Link for the ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE. Configuration takes place directly in the browser and includes all relevant settings: Trigger point, rapid trigger, RGB effects, macros, key assignment and profiles. In practice, this works surprisingly reliably and quickly.
A major advantage is the platform independence. Settings can easily be made on different computers without having to install software. Profiles can also be saved in the cloud, which is particularly practical for users with multiple systems.
However, this approach requires an active internet connection. In addition, the interface is functional but less visually sophisticated than classic desktop solutions. Power users will quickly find their way around, but beginners will need some time to get used to it. Overall, the concept is convincing due to its flexibility, even if it may not suit everyone’s taste.
Practical test, typing feel and sound
In everyday use, the ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE shows what magnetic Hall Effect switches can achieve. The new gaming keyboard makes it unmistakably clear that ASUS ROG is clearly targeting gaming professionals and competitive gamers (and no, not just in terms of price). Even after the first few hours, it is noticeable how immediate and at the same time controlled every input feels.
Unlike classic mechanical switches, there is no feeling of fixed mechanical resistance, but rather a linear, almost “floating” movement that nevertheless provides precise feedback at all times as to where the button is located. The decisive factor is the finely adjustable trigger depth. In practice, this function is not a gimmick, but a real game changer. For fast shooters, the WASD and action buttons can be set to extremely low trigger values so that even minimal movements are registered.
The rapid trigger function is particularly impressive. Compared to conventional linear switches, where the reset point is fixed, the Falchion Ace reacts dynamically to the actual position of the button. This means that as soon as the finger is released slightly, the key is immediately ready for the next input. In practice, this results in much more precise strafing, faster directional changes and overall smoother movement control. Particularly in competitive shooters or action titles with a high input frequency, this is a clear advantage that is difficult to miss after a short period of familiarization.
However, this alone does not set the ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE apart from other Hall Effect keyboards, some of which are significantly cheaper(HATOR Skyfall 80 MAG ULTIMA 8K) or integrate additional features such as a display(Corsair Vanguard Pro 96).
What I particularly like about ASUS is the combination of performance, ergonomics, grip of the keycaps and practical additional features such as the touchbar on the top. The pre-lubricated ROG HFX V2 switches are simply outstanding. Smooth, precise and, thanks to their box design, without any unwanted movement.
In my opinion, the combination of high-end features and the quick and easy adjustment directly on the keyboard sets the Falchion Ace 75 HE apart from many other magnetic keyboards. Trigger points and much more can be adjusted directly during the game without having to go through the software.
The keyboard also shows its versatility when writing longer texts. With the release point set slightly higher, a very controlled, even typing feel develops that hardly causes any fatigue. It is striking how consistently each key responds: There are no deviations in resistance or uneven feedback, which indicates the high manufacturing quality of the Hall sensors.
Sound of the ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE
A significant part of the positive overall impression is due to the sound. ASUS has equipped the ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE with an elaborate internal damping system, which is not a matter of course even in the high-end segment. The six damping layers almost completely eliminate disruptive resonances. Instead of metallic reverberation or a hollow “ping”, the result is a deep, controlled sound with a slightly muted character. The typing sound is mature and of high quality without being dull or lifeless.
Sound test of the ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE:
The PBT keycaps contribute to the acoustic and haptic impression. Their slightly rough surface provides a secure grip, even with sweaty hands, and enhances the feeling of control. At the same time, they effectively prevent the tonal peaks that often occur with thinner ABS caps. Even after prolonged use, there is no noticeable smoothing or wear, which further confirms the high-quality impression.
ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE test: Conclusion
No question: The ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE does not reinvent the wheel of magnetic Hall Effect gaming keyboards. 8,000 Hz, customizable trigger points, rapid trigger, hot-swap,… we have already seen all of this on other keyboards. What I particularly like in this case, however, is the implementation.
The operating concept on the keyboard itself seems well thought out. The combination of scroll wheel, touch bar and Rapi trigger switch allows me to adjust my settings in no time at all (and while playing) without having to call up the software. The keyboard rounds it all off with excellent switches, convincing ergonomics and a form factor that (at least for me) represents the absolute sweet spot of size and functionality.
The ASUS ROG Falchion Ace 75 HE hardly gives cause for criticism. The futuristic lettering on the keycaps is a matter of taste, albeit more restrained than on many other keyboards from the manufacturer. What I’m missing is wireless connectivity – even with a reduced polling rate – but I’m simply not a fan of wires on my desk. And then, of course, there’s the high price. But the well-known competition has that too. However, I do have one point of criticism. ASUS, your included switch and keycap puller is really crap. Really. For the price, you could have used a better quality tool, couldn’t you?
