Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless review: The perfect mouse for gamers and creators?

The Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless comes with a technology package that, on paper, clearly positions itself in the enthusiast segment. At the heart of the successor to the Nightsword RGB from 2019 is the in-house MARKSMAN S sensor, which offers a resolution of 100 to 33,000 DPI in individual steps and achieves a tracking speed of 750 IPS and an acceleration of 50G. But the new edition of the gaming nager also has a lot to offer beyond the new sensor, as our Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless test shows.

Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless review: design and workmanship

What a surprise: with the Nightsword v2 Wireless, Corsair is bringing back its ergonomic gaming mouse and giving esports rodents such as the Sabre v2 Pro Wireless MG (our test) or Ironclaw Wireless SE a sibling that should satisfy the demands of ambitious gamers and creators alike. Let’s start with the biggest limitation: left-handers (like me) are still left out.

The Nightsword v2 Wireless is an ergonomic mouse designed exclusively for right-handed users and this is immediately apparent. The curved shape with the distinctive thumb rest on the left side feels comfortable in the hand from the very first minute. Corsair has developed a geometry here that works well for both the palm grip and the claw grip, although players with very small hands may need some time to get used to the volume.

At 129.6 mm x 78 mm x 40.9 mm, the v2 Wireless is anything but compact and, with a weight of 89 grams, not exactly light either. But: It fits perfectly in the hand. And that’s what matters in the end.

The workmanship is extremely solid and of high quality. The matte black surface hardly attracts fingerprints and offers enough grip to prevent the mouse from slipping out of your hand, even during intensive gaming sessions. The thumb rest is lightly textured and gives the thumb and ring finger a natural anchor when gripping the mouse from the side. The forward and backward buttons are located on the left-hand side and are ergonomically easy to reach without being triggered unintentionally.

The dedicated Elgato stream deck button on the thumb side is one of the most striking design features and at the same time the most interesting innovation compared to conventional gaming mice. It is well positioned and can be operated intuitively with the thumb. The scroll wheel has a left and right tilt, which is useful for button configuration. The DPI buttons on the top are kept small and are slightly raised so that they cannot be hit accidentally during gaming.

One small point of criticism concerns the power switch on the underside: switching between 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and Off requires deliberate gripping if you don’t lift the mouse. This is not a deal-breaker, but an aspect that you will find slightly cumbersome after prolonged use as soon as you regularly switch between the connection modes.

The UPE sliders on the underside glide very smoothly on standard gaming mouse pads. Corsair also offers a surface selection in the software, which can be used to calibrate the sensor to different surfaces. Overall, the Nightsword v2 Wireless is a mouse that has been built for intensive, continuous use.

The features of the Nightsword v2

On paper, the Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless is a mouse that leaves nothing to be desired and this is reflected in everyday use. The most important and unusual feature is the native Elgato Stream Deck integration. The dedicated button can be used to display a virtual Stream Deck on the screen, which can be fully configured using the Stream Deck software (version 7.4.1 or higher).

You can create up to four virtual decks and assign hotkeys, macros, scene switching, timer functions or application shortcuts to them. Profiles can be activated automatically as soon as a certain application comes to the fore, which is particularly useful in gaming: the profile for Genshin Impact, CS2 or another frequently played game is loaded automatically without the need for manual intervention.

Apart from the stream deck function, the mouse offers 11 fully assignable buttons, five DPI levels plus a sniper level (the latter can only be activated via software), three RGB lighting zones and up to five onboard saved profiles. There is also a pleasantly rasterized four-way scroll wheel, which can also be tilted to the left or right. The tri-mode connectivity with 2.4 GHz SLIPSTREAM, Bluetooth 5.2 and USB-C makes the mouse flexible to use: suitable for gaming via SLIPSTREAM, via Bluetooth for office use or the second computer.

The included USB adapter allows the wireless dongle to be moved closer to the mouse to maximize the connection quality. The optical switches are designed for up to 100 million clicks. Compared to mechanical switches, they react without a physical bounce effect and are therefore theoretically faster and more resistant to errors. The click characteristics are defined and provide clear feedback without being too loud or too hard. A clear plus point for frequent clickers.

What limits the features somewhat: Bluetooth is explicitly intended for productivity and office applications and is not optimized for gaming, as the latency is correspondingly higher. In addition, the mouse can only be paired with one device at a time via Bluetooth. If you regularly switch between two devices, you have to switch to re-pairing mode each time, which requires a brief but deliberate intervention.

Up to 170 hours of battery life

Corsair’s Nightsword v2 Wireless boasts an impressive battery life of up to 170 hours, albeit under optimum conditions, i.e. with the lighting deactivated, 1 kHz polling and a 2.4 GHz connection. In Bluetooth mode without lighting, it is up to 164 hours. These are figures that clearly stand out in direct comparison with many competing products.

In practical use with activated RGB lighting and 1,000 Hz polling, the runtime is reduced to 42 hours via 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth. If you switch up to 8,000 Hz, the runtime drops to around 25.5 hours in 2.4 GHz mode. This is still very solid for a wireless mouse in this class, but puts the maximum specification into perspective considerably. If you regularly play with 8,000 Hz and lighting, you will have to connect the mouse to the cable much more often than with a more economical configuration.

The mouse is charged via the USB-C port on the front, which is practical as you can continue playing while charging without any problems if the cable is routed accordingly. The battery capacity is 500 mAh (Li-ion polymer). The remaining battery charge is communicated via the lighting zones: Flashing green = full, flashing amber = medium, flashing red = low, breathing red throughout = critical. This works well in everyday use, but requires you to actively pay attention to the status display when the lights are switched off.

App connection: full throttle in the browser

The Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless is configured via two software solutions: the CORSAIR Web Hub and the Elgato Stream Deck app. Both cover different areas and complement each other well, but also mean that you have to work with two programs for full functionality. The CORSAIR Web Hub is a browser-based solution without installation. You open the relevant URL, authorize access and select the mouse.

From there, DPI levels can be configured (up to five levels plus sniper), all buttons can be reassigned (keystrokes, macros, media functions, special system functions), lighting zones can be adjusted, device settings such as polling rate, brightness, sleep timer, angle snapping, lift height, surface selection, motion sync and ripple control can be controlled and firmware updates can be imported. The concept of no software installation is commendable, but only works reliably as long as you are using a modern browser and have a stable connection to the Web Hub.

The Elgato Stream Deck app (from version 7.4.1) manages the Virtual Stream Decks. Here you can create your own profiles for each recognized application context, drag and drop icons onto the virtual buttons, set hotkeys, timers, soundboard functions and multi-action sequences. The app is sophisticated and intuitive to use for anyone already familiar with a physical Stream Deck. What’s new is that the Nightsword v2 Wireless appears directly as a device in the Stream Deck software and is treated as a virtual device, completely equivalent to a physical Stream Deck.

If you don’t want to use the Stream Deck function, you can do without it, but you will lose the most interesting feature of the mouse. Overall, the combination of Web Hub and Stream Deck app is absolutely coherent, as most people will probably be able to manage without installing any software.

Performance and practical test

In everyday use, the Nightsword v2 Wireless demonstrates what Corsair designed it for: a mouse that is designed to impress in both competitive gaming and productive everyday work. The MARKSMAN S sensor delivers consistent, clean tracking performance in both areas of use. At medium DPI values between 800 and 1,600 DPI, the typical range for FPS titles, the sensor works precisely and without any noticeable jitter or unwanted tracking deviations. The ripple control function in the software noticeably reduces fine cursor jitter at high DPI values, which is particularly relevant for MOBA and MMO gamers who work with higher sensitivities. At my preferred setting of 3,600 DPI, the mouse works flawlessly, but even at 20,000 DPI and above, the performance remains excellent.

The 8,000 Hz polling rate is noticeable in direct comparison to 1,000 Hz, especially when playing very fast, responsive games. The input advantage over standard polling is real, but subtle: the cursor follows the hand movement slightly more directly, which becomes noticeable after a familiarization phase in tense gaming situations. In the practical test over several gaming sessions, the 2.4 GHz connection via SLIPSTREAM was stable at all times, without any measurable dropouts or connection interruptions.

The Elgato Stream Deck integration proves to be a real added value in gaming if you are prepared to invest time in setting it up. A separate profile for the respective game, which is automatically activated at startup, and assignable shortcut keys for inventory, skills or communication functions, which noticeably speeds up recurring actions. The function is particularly useful in MMOs and MOBAs, where many skills need to be accessed quickly. In FPS games, the benefit is more limited, as the mouse buttons are limited to fire and ADS anyway.

The optical switches leave a positive impression: fast, clean triggering without bouncing, consistent feedback over many hours. The side buttons can be operated securely in gaming mode. However, I find the two upper side buttons, which are intended for switching between DPI settings by default, a little too smooth. During the Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless test, I accidentally triggered them several times.

In office mode via Bluetooth, the mouse is unobtrusive and responsive enough for all productive tasks. Switching between gaming mode and office setup is accomplished by flipping the power switch on the underside, which, as already mentioned, is a minor inconvenience in the workflow, but not a fundamental problem.

The Corsair Nightsword v2 Wireless is a well thought-out gaming mouse for right-handed users that can do much more than just perform strongly and quickly (okay, it can do that too). The MARKSMAN S sensor with 33,000 DPI and 8,000 Hz hyper-polling delivers what competitive gamers expect: precise, lag-free input even in fast-paced gaming situations. The tri-mode connectivity makes the device versatile and the battery life of up to 170 hours is impressive in this class, even if the practical values in operation with lighting and a high polling rate are significantly lower.

The real unique selling point is the Elgato Stream Deck integration. If you know and use this feature, you get a gaming mouse that combines productive and gaming workflows in a way that no other product on the market currently offers in this form. The setup requires a second app and some training time, but pays off in daily gaming at the latest.
