Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless review: design and workmanship
When you take the Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless out of its packaging for the first time, you immediately notice that no compromises have been made when it comes to materials. The case consists of a solid aluminum frame, which gives the keyboard a rigidity that is rarely found on low-profile boards. There is no creaking, no bending. The chassis feels like it has been milled from a single piece. Extremely robust and high quality. Available in black and white, the keyboard fits seamlessly into any modern setup style, whether minimalist home office or RGB-packed gaming desk.
The slim, low-profile 99% form factor keeps the footprint on the desk small without sacrificing function keys. Personally, I’m a big fan of low-profile keyboards and really appreciate the ergonomics. And Corsair has done an excellent job with the Vanguard Air 99 Wireless. Weighing in at 915 grams, the keyboard is pleasantly high-quality, but not too heavy. Only the large full-size layout is a matter of taste: with dimensions of 426 mm x 138 mm x 226 mm, the Vanguard Air 99 Wireless takes up a little more space than the popular TKL or 75 percent form factors.
The keycaps are shinethrough-capable and relatively abrasion-resistant. Unfortunately, Corsair only uses ABS keycaps for the German version, while the US model is equipped with higher-quality PBT Doubleshot keycaps.
A special feature of the Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless is the 1.9-inch color display (IPS, 320×170, 350 cd/m²), which is located on the right edge in the upper area of the keyboard. It displays animated GIFs, static images or real-time feedback. A real eye-catcher with practical functions. The multifunctional rotary control next to it is mounted precisely and responds cleanly to every turn. The Vanguard Air 99 is a very good choice for anyone looking for an elegant, durable device that also looks good.
The second special feature of the low-profile keyboard are the six blue “SP” keys on the left edge. These can be assigned the functions of a Stream Deck from Corsair subsidiary Elgato, for example. Although this is not quite as convenient as the implementation on the Corsair Galleon 100 SD (our test), it also works perfectly in practice.
Features of the Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless
Corsair leaves hardly anything to be desired when it comes to technical features. At the heart of the Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless are the Corsair OPX Low-Profile Optical-Mechanical Switches, which combine the best of both worlds in many respects. Optical switches work without mechanical contact: Instead, the key shaft interrupts a beam of infrared light when pressed, which registers the input at almost the speed of light.
This eliminates mechanical bouncing and enables exceptionally low latency. The switches are factory pre-lubed, which is clearly noticeable in direct comparison to non-lubed switches: the typing feel is smooth, even and without the typical grinding or scratching noises of cheaper alternatives from the very first second.
The technical data of the OPX switches speak for themselves: 45 g actuating force. Light enough for fatigue-free typing, but not so light as a feather that unintentional inputs occur. The actuation point is 1.5 mm and the total key travel is only 2.5 mm. The stated service life of up to 80 million keystrokes is not just an empty marketing promise, but an understandable advantage of optical technology: as there is no mechanical wear, these switches simply last longer. A curved lens design also ensures a more even and brilliant RGB illumination of each individual key.
The absolute technical highlight is the True 8K polling rate (8,000 Hertz), which the Vanguard Air 99 Wireless achieves both wired and wirelessly via Slipstream v2. This is made possible by Corsair’s proprietary AXON technology in combination with the newly developed Slipstream Wireless v2 protocol. In practice, an 8,000 Hz polling rate means that the keyboard reports its status to the computer up to 8,000 times per second. Every input is transmitted without any perceptible delay, which can make all the difference, especially in competitive gaming situations.
If you prefer, you can also pair the keyboard via Bluetooth thanks to tri-mode connectivity. Although this is slower, it is a practical advantage if you often change systems or want to use the device with tablets and the like.
Further features:
- 7 programmable special keys: 6 dedicated Stream Deck SD keys for assignment via the Elgato Stream Deck app and 1 dedicated Stream Deck launch key for immediate access to the Virtual Stream Deck
- FlashTap SOCD handling: Users can choose how simultaneous opposite inputs (e.g. pressing A and D at the same time) are handled – First Input, Last Input or Neutral Priority. Deactivated by default, can be activated via FN + Right Shift
- Game Mode Button: Dedicated button instantly sets the keyboard to a tournament profile with static lighting, Winlock enabled, customized polling rate (default: 1,000 Hz, adjustable up to 8,000 Hz) and a scan rate of 4,000 Hz
- 5-layer internal sound damping and gasket mounting for a rich, acoustically pleasant typing experience – the board sounds muted and “thocky”, not cheaply rattling
- Per-key RGB illumination with curved lens design for even, brilliant illumination of each key
App connection: configuration in the browser
The software side of the Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless is complex, but well thought out. Corsair relies on an approach consisting of two apps: the Corsair Web Hub for configuring the keyboard directly in the browser and the Elgato Stream Deck app for… Stream Deck functions. Both solutions complement each other, but cover different areas.
The Corsair Web Hub is a browser-based configuration interface that requires no local driver installation. This is a big advantage over the iCUE software, which is resource-hungry and unstable on some systems. The Web Hub can be used to program macros, reassign keys, personalize RGB effects and save up to 5 individual profiles that are stored directly on the keyboard. The associated firmware update utility is also browser-based and enables fast, uncomplicated firmware updates without having to install a separate application.
The Elgato Stream Deck app takes full control of the 6 SD Keys and the Virtual Stream Deck. The app is known from the Elgato ecosystem and has established itself over the years as a reliable, intuitive solution for streamers and content creators. Actions can be assigned to the SD keys using drag-and-drop. From OBS scene changes and Photoshop shortcuts to gaming macros or muting the microphone and speakers.
There is also the Virtual Stream Deck, which appears immediately on the screen via a dedicated launch key and provides an unlimited number of virtual keys. With customizable shapes, sizes, designs, icons and actions. If you already own a physical Stream Deck, you can transfer profiles and settings directly, making it much easier to get started. The Elgato Marketplace also offers a growing library of plugins, profiles and extensions that can be used to expand the system almost indefinitely.
Battery life of the Vanguard Air 99 Wireless
Corsair delivers solid figures when it comes to battery life. The manufacturer claims a runtime of up to 55 hours. And this figure is technically correct, but only applies under very specific conditions: Connection via Slipstream Wireless v2, RGB lighting completely disabled, LCD display set to 20% brightness and polling rate at 1,000 Hz. Under these almost ideal conditions, this is a respectable value that can keep up with the premium segment.
In everyday use, the calculation naturally looks different. If you activate the per-key RGB lighting and run the display at full brightness, you will fall well short of the 55-hour mark and end up with somewhere between 20 and 30 hours. RGB lighting and the 1.9-inch color display are the board’s biggest energy consumers. If you use the keyboard for 8-10 hours a day with the lighting and display activated, you will realistically have to plug it into the charging cable every 2-3 days.
Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless in a practical test
In everyday use, the Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless consistently does what Corsair promises: It is a seamless companion that switches effortlessly between intensive office work and long gaming sessions without you having to get used to it or reconfigure anything. The first impression when typing is excellent: the OPX low-profile switches with their short travel of 2.5 mm and early actuation point at 1.5 mm provide immediate, direct feedback. In combination with the gasket mounting and the 5-layer sound damping, this creates a typing feel that is a far cry from cheap low-profile plastic boards. The keys sound muted, rich and pleasantly “thocky”. Anyone sitting next to other people in a shared office or home office will appreciate the quiet operation.
The keyboard reveals its full potential in gaming. The 8K wireless polling rate via Slipstream v2 is noticeable in direct comparison with standard 1K boards: In fast, competitive games such as shooters, where milliseconds make the difference between winning and losing, the Vanguard Air 99 Wireless responds with an immediacy that must be experienced. The FlashTap SOCD function is a real feature for experienced players: counter-punishing in tactical shooters or jiggle-peeking behind cover are clean and controllable thanks to the precise SOCD prioritization. Once you’ve had control of simultaneous counter directional inputs in your own hands, you won’t want to do without it again.
Stream Deck Integration shows its full potential, especially in everyday streaming and content creator work. The 6 SD keys on the keyboard replace a separate physical Stream Deck on the desk in many situations. The Virtual Stream Deck, which appears immediately on the screen with a launch key, extends these possibilities to literally unlimited virtual buttons. Ideal for complex workflows that require more than 6 physical SD keys.
The 1.9-inch LCD display also turns out to be much more useful in everyday use than expected. When turning the rotary dial, it immediately shows which parameter is currently being changed and by what value. Without the need for eye contact with the on-screen software. The Game Mode is surprisingly practical in everyday use: a single press of a button is all it takes to switch from a colorful productivity configuration to a reduced tournament profile.
The only disadvantage in practice: Setting up the two-software system consisting of Corsair Web Hub and Stream Deck App initially requires some time and patience. Especially if you want to combine both systems optimally. Anyone expecting a simple plug-and-play solution without any software configuration will need a short start-up time, but the effort is worth it.
Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless Review: Conclusion
The Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless is without doubt one of the most technically powerful low-profile keyboards currently available. The manufacturer once again impressively proves that it has understood what gamers and creators really value.
It combines everything a modern high-end keyboard needs in a slim low-profile housing: lightning-fast optical switches with outstanding haptics, true 8K wireless performance, in-depth Stream Deck integration, an elegant design made of aluminum and PBT, as well as a smart color display with rotary control. I particularly liked the typing feel and acoustics during the test. It is also commendable that the customization is once again done directly in the browser.
Points of criticism can be counted on one hand. The battery life is solid, but doesn’t pull out all the stops. Setting it up using two software solutions takes a little more time and the price is high. If you are prepared to invest in a real flagship keyboard, the Corsair Vanguard Air 99 Wireless is a device that is really fun in the long term. For ambitious gamers, streamers, content creators and anyone who wants to take their workflow to a new level, it is a clear, unreserved recommendation.
