DeepCool MG350 – Review of the futuristic FPS mouse

In September, DeepCool introduced its first mouse, the MC310, which was supposed to stand out due to its particularly low weight. Two more models followed with the MG350 and MG510 Wireless, and the former mouse is in our review today.

DeepCool advertises the MG350 as a mouse for shooter gamers, which is expressed by a Rapid Fire button under the thumb joint, among other things. The company relies on a PixArt PAW3335 for the sensor, the switches are supplied by Omron and an LED illumination is of course also included.

At launch, the DeepCool MG350 is to come onto the market for a price of 60 Euros. Whether the total package is worth it for this price, and where the strengths and weaknesses of the mouse lie, we clarify in the following.

Scope of delivery

The DeepCool MG350 is delivered in a white, color-printed cardboard box. In it, besides the mouse itself, there is only a short product overview. This explains the layout of the mouse. There are no other accessories: The two meter long and sleeved cable is soldered to the mouse.

Design & Workmanship

The MG350 features a relatively short and tall case. In terms of design, DeepCool goes futuristic: transitions between the individual housing parts are emphasized with indentations, and the design of the back and forward buttons in particular is striking. These are very large compared to other mice, and a semi-cylindrical mouse cover is unlikely to be found on any other device. In addition, the mouse also has the aforementioned extra button for the thumb as well as two DPI buttons behind the mouse wheel.

Apart from the basic shape, the use of two different materials for the case is also unusual. The entire underside of the MG350 is colored cyan, whereas the surface relies on matte black plastic. This is rubberized almost everywhere, only the thumb area is roughened instead.

Visually, the interplay of the two plastics in particular is very successful in our eyes: Since the black plastic never goes all the way to the bottom, there is always a small colored stripe on the underside. In addition, there is the mouse wheel, which is illuminated in the same color, as well as an equally illuminated DeepCool logo behind the additional keys on the side. Otherwise, the MG350 has an interesting look as well, but it’s not quite as playful – or even “cluttered” – as some other gaming designs.

DeepCool’s newcomer can also convince with the basic construction: The surfaces built into the mouse are haptically very pleasant, and the case is also torsionally stiff and optically flawlessly processed. We only found a small conspicuity at one point: The thumb rest installed on the left side can be pressed in a bit at the middle tip, directly behind the DeepCool logo. It also protrudes slightly further than the adjacent mouse back. This is not visible when you run your finger over this area, but then you can feel the slightly outstanding plastic. Since this area of the mouse is never touched in normal use, this shouldn’t be a problem in practice. However, it could still have been avoided, of course

Practice & Ergonomics

DeepCool recommends the MG350 for use in either the palm or claw grip. Due to the squat housing shape, depending on hand size, both grip techniques and also fingertip grip are well possible in our eyes. The mouse was a bit unfamiliar to us at first, but after a short time it can be used comfortably for a long time. Thus, nothing stands in the way of an extended work or gaming session.

In addition, the built-in keys are also very easy to reach. The thumb key can easily be triggered by a movement of the thumb joint, and the forward and back keys are easy to use without getting used to them due to their very large caps. On top of that, the pressure points of all built-in keys are also pleasantly precise. Thus, the MG350 can fully convince us here.

The sensor installed in the mouse also does well. The PAW3325 worked very precisely and always without delays in our test. Furthermore, an extensive adjustment is possible via the software, which allows the sensor to cover all common purposes. More about this in the next section.

Software & Configuration

For further configuration of the MG350, DeepCool also offers a software that is available for download via the manufacturer’s website. The program is a good 10 MB in size and can be installed very quickly as well as without the need for registration.

The configuration software has a tidy and quickly understandable layout. In the program, you can make settings on the sensor, the key assignment as well as the illumination, which are transferred live to the device and saved there. After configuration, it is therefore no longer necessary to open the software.

With regard to the monochromatic lighting, the tool offers a breath effect configurable in speed and brightness (four levels + off), as well as a static glow. More effects would also not be necessary with the two installed, single-color LEDs.

As for the sensor, the MG350 offers four DPI levels that can be adjusted in increments of a hundred in the range between 100 and 16,000 DPI. In addition, the lift-off distance (1mm, 2mm) and the polling rate (125-1,000 Hz) can be adjusted.

Lastly, there are settings for the key assignment in the software. These can be selected directly on a replica of the mouse and then assigned a new function. The selection of the respective key works well: The activation fields are appropriately located above the mouse’s image.

All eight keys of the MG350 can be freely assigned a different function in the software. Among other things, keyboard and multimedia hotkeys as well as a rapid fire function are available. The latter is the standard assignment of the additional thumb key. Here, too, most wishes are covered by the software – because the missing macro function is only of limited use for mice. However, some users might possibly wish for an Aim function, which would have been suitable for the thumb key.

Conclusion

DeepCool’s new MG350 mouse is expected to hit the market for a price of 60 euros, and for that, the device promises many typical gaming features, such as a high-resolution sensor and various additional buttons. The former did its job impeccably in our test, and we also liked the (additional) buttons of the MG350 very much in terms of ergonomics and pressure points. In addition, the mouse generally feels good in the hand, and the modern design of the mouse should also find many friends.

Thus, the MG350 can convince in the core competencies, but there are unfortunately also a few areas where potential has been given away. This is especially true for the minimally protruding bezel on the left side of the case and the use of a single-color instead of RGB illumination. To what extent these points are critical is probably an individual decision. Especially with the illumination, we can understand why a turquoise illumination together with the same-colored case base results in a coordinated look.

Should one buy the MG350 now? That might mainly depend on your own demands and the price. After all, there are other mice with similar features and for example RGB lighting for 60 Euros. On the other hand, the mouse, like many other products, should probably be a bit cheaper than the MSRP, and it fulfills its basic functions well. Thus, for anyone who likes it in terms of looks, features and ergonomics, it should be a good choice.
