EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC Review: design and workmanship

  • tool-free mounting
  • Simple, high-quality design

The EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC arrives securely packed in a recyclable cardboard box weighing around 20 kg. All components are individually packed inside. The monitor must be connected to the stand before it can be used, which can be done quickly and easily without tools using two wing screws.

The underside of the stand is rubberized for a secure hold. The latter comes in a wide U-shape, which ensures a secure hold for the screen weighing around 9.7 kg. Mounting using a VESA mount is also possible without any problems thanks to the 100 x 100 hole, should this be desired.

Visually, the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC cuts a very sleek and business-appropriate figure. It is completely black and frameless on the sides. At the back, a white EIZO logo is set off at the top.

The manufacturer has integrated a 5-megapixel webcam with infrared sensor into the top frame, while the speakers, sensor buttons and status LED are located at the bottom. The monitor with a very discreet 3800R curvature can be adjusted in height by around 20 cm and is then only around 3 cm above the table.

Lateral rotation of up to 90° is also possible. The tilt is between -5 degrees and +35 degrees. However, it is not possible to rotate into portrait format (pivot function), which is not common with curved monitors.

The manufacturer has installed a simple cable management system in the monitor stand, which allows the cables to be routed through a thin plastic holder. The monitor’s power supply unit is integrated directly into the housing.

Connections, features and operation

  • Many connections
  • Well thought-out position on the side
  • USB-C with 94 watt PD

The connection selection of the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC is very similar to the EV3240X, which we tested back in April, and leaves nothing to be desired. There are two HDMI ports at the back of the panel, one DisplayPort 1.3 and one USB-C for image playback, with the latter also offering PowerDelivery with up to 94 watts.

There is also a USB-B port and an RJ45 LAN port. The ports can also be protected by a cover if required. There is also a power connection and power switch on the right, and on the left side you will also find another USB-C port (downstream and 15 watt power delivery), two USB-A ports with 5 GBit/s and a 3.5 mm jack connection.

The device is operated via six controls on the underside, the position of which is easily recognizable thanks to the contrasting lines on the front. Operation via the touch buttons works flawlessly and very precisely, while the on-screen display (OSD) is pleasantly simple and tidy, so that anyone can quickly find their way around.

In the OSD, you can choose between different picture modes, including an sRGB mode. There is even a DICOM mode for displaying digital images for medical purposes. In the EcoView settings, you will find options for saving power, such as the option to switch the ambient light sensor on and off, which adjusts the brightness based on the ambient light.

Of course, all picture settings can also be adjusted in the OSD, including adjustments to the color, contrast and brightness values.

Features of the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC

  • Webcam with good image quality…
  • … but requires USB connection
  • Good microphone quality and speakers

The EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC displays in UWQHD with 3,440 x 1,440 pixels on a screen diagonal of 34.1 inches. The glossy IPS panel achieves a brightness of 300 nits and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1. The manufacturer does not provide any information on the color space coverage, but thanks to a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz and a grey-to-grey response time of 5 ms, the monitor is not really suitable for gaming.

A special feature is the 5-megapixel webcam with microphones, which has a field of view of 80° and also enables login with facial recognition thanks to WindowsHello. The camera also has a privacy shutter: a privacy screen can be moved in front of the lens using a simple slider on the top.

The camera has a resolution of 2,592 x 1,944 pixels at 30 frames per second and delivers really convincing image quality in good lighting conditions, which is absolutely sufficient for online meetings and the like. The microphone quality is also fine.

The webcam delivers good image quality

A little awkward, however: in order to use the webcam, the monitor must also be connected via USB-B if you want to use it via DisplayPort or HDMI. Only then will the webcam be recognized in the Windows settings. However, if you use USB-C for image processing, a second cable is not necessary.

There are also two 4-watt speakers that produce a good sound – at least for monitor speakers. All in all, the features are really appealing, even considering the price.

Image quality of the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC

Subjectively speaking, the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC delivers good to very good picture quality. The picture scores with accurate, but somewhat very pale colors and the contrast ratio is – for an IPS panel – really impressive.

The monitor is also very stable in terms of viewing angles and can be viewed very well even from an unfavorable angle. The 21:9 format in combination with the resolution of 3,440 x 1,440 pixels proves to be pleasant. This provides plenty of space on the desktop and for applications.

Especially those who like to use two apps or windows in parallel will appreciate the extra space in width. The fonts are crisp and easy to read, despite the rather low pixel density of 109 ppi – which is perfectly normal for this size.

Color fringing and similar problems are also very limited, resulting in an overall good result, with which the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC not only cuts a good figure for office work, but also for everyday tasks, surfing or media streaming.

Light gaming is also possible, but not necessarily recommended due to the 60 Hz and rather slow response time. As with the EV3240X, I liked the sRGB mode best.

Lab test of the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC

As always, we also took a look at how good the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC really is in the lab. Here, the monitor achieves quite good values. However, it quickly becomes apparent that it is not really suitable for color-critical work.

The sRGB color space is covered 96 percent, which is quite good. AdobeRGB and DCI-P3, on the other hand, are only covered by 74%, which is too little for creative work that requires accurate colors.

EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC

The color fidelity is absolutely fine. The EIZO monitor achieves an average DeltaE value of 1.53, which is a good result. However, there are noticeable deviations in the blue gradations in particular, with a peak DeltaE of 5.00.

EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC

However, the gamma curve and brightness are at a very good level and correspond to the manufacturer’s specifications. In particular, the maximum brightness of 298.6 nits is close to the promised 300 nits, while the contrast ratio of 1,070:1 is even slightly above the specification.

EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC

The EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC achieves good, but by no means outstanding, results in color homogeneity, i.e. the balance of the color display. Here, at maximum brightness, deviations of up to DeltaE 4.2 in the upper third can be seen. This is still within the completely normal range.

The luminance homogeneity, i.e. the balance of the illumination, shows significantly greater deviations. We measured up to 17 percent on the right in the center of the picture, and even at 100 percent brightness, the deviation of 16 percent is a little too high.

The difference of almost 50 nits (296.5 nits in the middle compared to 250.3 nits to the right) can be seen quite clearly in practice. Unfortunately, this is too much.

EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC test: Conclusion

With the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC, the manufacturer delivers a good, ultra-wide office monitor. Not only is the wide and well thought-out selection of connections pleasing, the FlexScan also scores with its versatility in terms of ergonomic options.

A unique selling point is the built-in webcam, which scores with really good image quality. In combination with the good microphones and speakers, the monitor makes additional peripherals unnecessary.

The picture quality is also at a good level, but cannot set itself apart from the noticeably cheaper competition. Brightness, color reproduction and contrast are merely standard fare, as you would expect to find in monitors half the price.

The LC-Power LC-M34-Q-C-PRO, for example, is noticeably ahead in terms of image quality and frame rate and costs only a third of the price. In return, the EIZO FlexScan EV3450XC offers more connections, useful office features and a significantly longer manufacturer’s warranty, which could justify the high price – depending on the area of application.

PRO

  • Many connections
  • Good webcam and speakers
  • Good image quality
CONTRA

  • Average brightness
  • Strong luminance deviations
  • High price
