Huion Kamvas 13 (Gen 3): New graphics monitor in test

Anyone looking for a new graphics monitor will soon be familiar with the Kamvas series from Huion. On September 5, a new product joins the range – the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3). This is an improved version of the Huion Kamvas 13, which we were able to test in advance and gather some impressions. Find out here whether it’s worth buying or whether you should perhaps look elsewhere.

Features

Of course, the Kamvas 13 Gen 3 does not come without accessories. The monitor comes with an adjustable stand, two cables (USB extension and USB-C connection cable for the monitor with one HDMI and two USB ports), a pen and holder with replacement tips, a drawing glove and a cleaning cloth for the monitor. So we have everything we need to get started with Windows. If you prefer to work with Android, you will need an additional power supply. If you don’t have one to hand, you can order one directly from the Huion store.

Look and feel

As always, the first thing that catches the eye is of course the exterior. And Huion hasn’t let itself get carried away here – the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) looks sleek and modern at first glance. The corners and edges have been rounded off and the black is rather matt. If you prefer a little more color in your life, you can also get the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) in pink.

There are five buttons on the left side, as well as wheels at the top and bottom, which can be assigned as desired. The wheels have buttons in the middle which can be used to adjust the current function of the wheels.

The stand is made of metal and plastic, with the surface covered with rubber in some places to prevent it from slipping. Six different angles can be set, this can be done within a few seconds and does not require the monitor to be removed from the stand.

The pen has three buttons, which can also be freely assigned. The surface is made of plastic, which is slightly rougher in the grip area to provide a better grip. It sits comfortably in the hand and the buttons are positioned in the grip area, as is usual, so that you can use them comfortably when drawing. It does not require batteries, so it is not too heavy.

To prevent the pen from rolling off your desk, it also comes with a holder that looks stylish and elegant. Inside are ten spare tips for the pen. A tool for removing the current tip from the pen is also integrated here – after you have unscrewed the holder, you can use the hole in the underside for this.

Software

The driver can be downloaded from the Huion website. This is the same driver that is used for other Kamvas 13 pens. It automatically recognizes which model and which pen is currently being used, making it easy to switch between different graphics monitors on the fly.

Here we find an intuitive user interface to customize the graphics monitor to our liking. Both the key assignment, the work surface and the pressure sensitivity can be calibrated, either fundamentally or only for specific programs.

Working feel

Working with the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) is smooth and pleasant. The surface of the FHD screen feels paper-like, but a little smoother. Due to the full lamination, the parallax is 0.4 millimeters, the difference between the pen tip and the cursor is minimal. The work surface is a little smaller than A4 paper and therefore offers enough space to work. The workflow is also efficiently supported by the buttons. The wheels, for example, make zooming very convenient.

A major feature of the new Kamvas is the pen, which has also been upgraded. After the larger models already use the Huion Pen 4.0, the Kamvas 13 is now following suit. The Pen 4.0 offers greater accuracy and greater pressure sensitivity with over 16,000 different levels.

Conclusion

The work goes smoothly, the default settings for the key assignment are sensible, so that hardly any adjustments should be necessary for many users. For * you get an inexpensive graphics monitor, which could be of particular interest to beginners. If you want to spend a little more money and value a slightly larger work surface and better resolution, you should look at the Kamvas 13 Pro (2.5K). However, it is not yet compatible with Pen 4.0 technology – meaning less pressure sensitivity and accuracy.

All in all, the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) is a solid upgrade to the previous generation.
