Logitech G435 Lightspeed – Review of the small and colorful gaming headset

Scope of delivery of the Logitech G435 headset

With the G435 Logitech has written sustainability on the flag, this is already evident in the packaging. Where plastic and synthetic materials are usually found, the manufacturer relies on cardboard or at least recycled material to a certain extent.

The gaming headset is delivered in a dark gray cardboard box with light blue lettering. Inside is the G435 itself, whose headband and ear pads are only protected by a paper cover. Next to it is a small cardboard box that contains the USB-A to USB-C charging cable, the USB-A dongle, a quick start guide and a Logitech G sticker.

Design and finish

“What a lightweight” was my first thought when I picked up the Logitech G435. In fact, the wireless gaming headset only weighs around 165 grams, making it noticeably lighter than most of its competitors. Even the Razer Barracuda X, which is also quite light anyway, looks like a heavy lump in direct comparison.

The striking color scheme also immediately catches the eye. Our test device in the “Blue/Raspberry” color variant relies on a matte blue exterior that is accentuated by pink ear pads and a slightly darker fabric cover of the headband.

While the right ear cup remains untouched, all controls are found on the left side. At the bottom, the manufacturer positions the USB-C input for charging, above that is a button to mute the microphone, a two-way volume rocker and the button to turn the device on and off including a status LED.

Two dark, oval “holes” testify to the built-in dual beamforming microphones, which the G435 uses for voice transmission – there is no classic microphone arm in this case.  The basic shape of the G435 is somewhat reminiscent of its big brother, the Logitech G733, but it weighs just under half as much.

Workmanship of the Logitech G435

In order to save weight, compromises in terms of build quality had to be accepted, of course. Thus, the headset is mostly made of (at least 22 percent recycled) plastic and is accordingly not as stiff as corresponding counterparts with built-in metal parts.

The gaming headset feels quite wobbly during fast movements. The headband also yields slightly under pressure, while Logitech does without a fabric cover on the inside of the ear cups. Thus, the drivers rest directly on the ears behind the plastic lid.

The headband’s mounts work very smoothly, but don’t offer a noticeable click. Thus, it can happen that the position is inadvertently adjusted during gaming. However, we are more concerned about the headband’s attachment to the ear cups, which has too much play for our taste. Only a long-term test will show whether the earpieces can withstand permanent stress. Nice detail: Behind the temples of the G435, Logitech hides the symbol of the world in the shape of a heart to once again acknowledge the sustainability factor.

Comfort of the Logitech G435

While the Logitech G435 still has to endure criticism in terms of workmanship, there is not too much to complain about in terms of wearing comfort. The very soft ear pads stand out positively, and their thickness of around 18 mm ensures a comfortable fit even in the long term.

In addition, they have an inner size of 67 mm x 36 mm (length x width) and rest comfortably over the ears, even for large ears. At the same time, the passive sealing is also excellent, so that a considerable amount of ambient noise is effectively blocked out.

Only the headband leaves a not quite as positive impression, because Logitech almost completely omits padding here. The headband, which is hidden under the fabric, is immediately felt on the head. Due to the headset’s low weight, however, this circumstance can be gotten over. The headband isn’t really oppressive or uncomfortable.

Operation and Practice

The operation of the Logitech G435 works flawlessly. All buttons are comfortable to reach and offer a good pressure point. If you hold down the on/off button, the gaming headset turns on immediately.

The headset is then immediately recognized in Bluetooth mode and is ready for use on a smartphone, tablet or notebook within a few seconds. The connection via USB-A dongle, with which the G435 transmits via the 2.4 GHz network for light-speed transmission, works similarly well. Simply connect it to the PC and the headset is ready for use.

This also works on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, but not on Nintendo Switch or Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One. However, the fact that Logitech omits a 3.5 mm jack connector here is not quite understandable from our point of view.  The wireless range is a good 10 meters, and the battery life is also good at around 18 hours of continuous use.

Thanks to plug-and-play connectivity, the gaming headset is also ready for use immediately and without additional software. Logitech’s own companion software, G Hub, recognizes the headset but doesn’t offer any features like presets or equalizer settings.

Logitech G435 review: sound and microphone

In our sound test, the Logitech G435 Lightspeed then has to show what it is really capable of. First of all, the technical data: Here, the manufacturer relies on dynamic drivers with a diameter of 40 mm and covers a frequency band of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz in it. These are pretty much the standard values that you would expect from a gaming headset.

The impedance, on the other hand, is 45 ohms, whereas most similarly priced representatives are at 32 ohms. Accordingly, the G435 is not quite as loud as we would like it to be, even at the maximum level.

We are also not completely convinced by the sound quality. Especially those who know similarly expensive headsets like the Logitech G Pro X, Razer Barracuda X or Astro A20 will be disappointed by the sound. Although the headset offers quite a good and precise tuning in gaming mode, the colorful headphones lack a bit of boom, which is why bass tends to fade strongly into the background. At the same time, the mids lack a bit of presence, which is why dialogs in particular do not reproduce all the nuances of the voices depicted.

Basically, however, the sound quality is on a good and quite balanced level, but it lacks the necessary brilliance in all frequency ranges. Other, similarly priced headsets manage this much better. At least Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos even provide simulated surround sound, which is also on a good level.

How good is the microphone of the G435 Lightspeed?

The dual beamforming microphones used in the Logitech G435 Lightspeed come with a sensitivity of 83.1 db SPL/mW and offer a frequency range of 100 Hz – 8,000 Hz. However, since there is no microphone boom, the user’s own voice is only reproduced quite quietly due to the distance to the mouth. In return, the quality is always the same, since the position cannot be changed.

The user’s own voice is reproduced quite clearly, but it lacks a bit of dynamics and fullness here as well. However, there is only little of the promised, effective suppression of background noise: Even mouse clicks and other noises are audible, while a quiet background noise can always be perceived.

Thus, the microphone quality of the Logitech G435 is only on a mediocre level. You can listen to how the headset sounds in the following video.

Summary of the Logitech G435 Lightspeed Gaming Headset

Logitech’s approach to build a particularly sustainable headset with the G435 Lightspeed is commendable. However, you won’t find any real unique selling points apart from the materials used. The build quality is decent, but the headset does not feel really high-end.

On the other hand, it is a real all-rounder thanks to two different wireless modes, which can be connected quickly and easily to PCs, smartphones and PlayStation consoles. The Logitech G435 makes a few mistakes in terms of wearing comfort and sound, where the colorful headphones sometimes lag behind the similarly priced competition. In the end, buyers get a rock-solid gaming headset with the G435, which is why it can score points with a younger target group especially in Bluetooth mode.

Colorful and versatile gaming headset with an impeccable control concept, but it can't quite keep up with the top in terms of workmanship and sound.
