MOZA Vision GS Test: Design and workmanship

  • High weight and excellent workmanship
  • flat F1 design
  • large, customizable HD touch display

No question: the MOZA Vision GS is an extremely high-quality steering wheel for professionals. The price alone of around 829 euros reveals this. However, this is also reflected in the design and workmanship.

The steering wheel is made entirely from aerospace-grade aluminum and has an elegant carbon finish. This not only looks extremely appealing, but also results in an excellent quality of workmanship.

With a weight of 1,587 grams, the Vision GS is certainly no lightweight. The steering wheel is 310 mm long and has a correspondingly low F1 look. It measures just 170 mm at its widest point and only 160 mm at its narrowest point in the middle.

The most striking feature on the front is of course the 2.85-inch HD touch display, which is located in the middle of the front. With a refresh rate of 60 Hz, it is extremely smooth and of course fully customizable. But more on that later.

There is also a whole range of buttons, dials and joysticks on the front, while there are four paddle shifters at the back (two digital and two analog). An RPM LED speed display at the top of the front section completes the picture.

With its hand-stitched, non-slip leather and robust construction, the MOZA Vision GS undoubtedly lives up to its high price tag.

The Vision GS relies on the manufacturer’s Direct Drive connection and is compatible with corresponding wheel bases such as the MOZA R3 (our test) or R5 (our test). However, there is an RJ45 connection at the rear, which allows the steering wheel to be used with third-party bases using a suitable adapter.

Operation of the MOZA Vision GS

  • Many buttons and controls
  • Customizable design with RGB
  • clumsy, bulky software

Operation of the MOZA Vision GS is extremely comprehensive. A total of eight buttons with adjustable RGB lighting are available on the front. They are unlabelled and can be customized using the enclosed sticker sheets.

There are also two additional buttons on the back. There are also two sticks (a 7-way joystick and an analog stick), two large rotary controls and three further rotary encoders, so that every little detail can be adjusted.

And let’s not forget the four carbon paddle shifters, which provide a travel of around 4 millimetres. The upper two are magnetically shifted and are intended for the gearbox, while the lower two are analog – for example for the clutch and more.

All buttons, sticks and shift paddles are excellently crafted and score points with a tactile, very precise pressure point and release behavior. They feel absolutely high quality and classy and also cut an excellent figure during play.

The buttons are customized using MOZA’s well-known Pit House software. All buttons and wheels can be individually assigned here. The LED speed bar on the top can also be customized here. It is also possible to customize the display, with eight ready-made designs to choose from.

Additional elements can also be set in the editor, both in text form and as graphics. However, the customization is a little tricky here. Although basic settings and parameters can be selected quickly and easily, the adjustments are so extensive (font, color, alignment, frame thickness, frame color and much more) that newcomers may have problems. The telemetry data settings in particular require a sure instinct.

During my test, however, the software did not immediately recognize the steering wheel correctly. It was not possible to adjust the dashboard. The only thing that helped here was to completely uninstall and reinstall the software, which solved the problem.

The display

  • Excellent readability
  • always straight alignment
  • Various presets

The display is therefore more than just a nice gimmick, especially as the screen with a diameter of around seven centimetres always aligns itself horizontally, even if you turn the steering wheel – this always ensures perfect readability. If you prefer, you can also deactivate this gyro stabilization.

Thanks to gyroscopic stabilization, the display always remains horizontally aligned

.

It is possible to swipe downwards to select different presets and designs, and to the right to switch from telemetry to tire wear or an overview of the last lap times, for example.

The eight pre-installed dashboards come with different designs and, depending on the option, also display speed, brake and accelerator pedal pressure, revs and many other parameters in addition to revs. However, there was a slight delay in the display of some of the designs, but this could be fixed with an upcoming update.

MOZA Vision GS in practical test

  • Excellent precision and pressure points
  • fits perfectly in the hand
  • Paddle shifters quite loud

The MOZA Vision GS cuts an excellent figure on the asphalt. With its 310 mm wide and very narrow design, the steering wheel sits comfortably in the hand, which is of course a particular advantage in Formula 1 and GT racing games. In rally simulations and other racing games, however, I prefer the round shape.

Thanks to the non-slip synthetic leather surface, the steering wheel is also comfortable and secure in the hand, while the display offers real added value. Instead of having to pay attention to the various parameters in the game, a quick glance at the wheel’s screen is enough.

The precise pressure points and many buttons also prove to be a success, although of course not all buttons need to be used. But better to have too many than too few, right?

The only point of criticism is the volume of the paddle shifters, which is comparatively high. Although this typical click of many normal paddles of cheaper steering wheels is not achieved here. So that’s complaining at a high level.

MOZA Vision GS test: Conclusion

The MOZA Vision GS is an excellent steering wheel for ambitious sim racing fans who don’t want to spend too much money. Sure: 830 euros is of course anything but a bargain, but comparably equipped counterparts (with display) easily cost twice as much.

The Vision GS not only impresses with its elegant and appealing design, but also with its outstanding build quality and practical, fully customizable OLED display, which thanks to gyro sensors always remains aligned and is therefore easy to read.

I also really liked the many buttons with their well-designed pressure points and the excellent paddle shifters during the test. Especially those who often play open-wheel and GT racing games will definitely be happy with this design.

The difference in handling compared to a cheaper steering wheel is clearly noticeable. Which is why the MOZA Vision GS really is excellent value for money. Another major advantage is its broad compatibility – not only with all MOZA wheel bases, but also with many third-party bases using adapters.

The only thing to criticize is the software and the unnecessarily complicated dashboard management. There is an urgent need for improvement here, but MOZA shows that it is working on this with regular updates.
