OBSBOT Tiny 3 test: Even smaller… and even better?

  • incredibly small and light
  • elegant design
  • USB-C; magnetic attachment; 1/4-inch thread

Even with the Tiny 2 (our test), I thought that a 4K webcam could hardly fit into an even smaller housing. But OBSBOT has once again proved me wrong: the OBSBOT Tiny 3 is significantly smaller and lighter than its direct predecessor.

With dimensions of 37 mm x 37 mm x 49 mm and a weight of just 63 grams, the webcam lives up to its name. By comparison, the Tiny 2 measures 62.02 mm x 47 mm x 44 mm and, at 95.6 grams, looks downright bulky. It’s unbelievable what the manufacturer has packed into such a tiny housing. Especially as the Tiny 3 is also technically superior – and significantly so. But more on that in a moment.

Let’s start with the design: it’s very reminiscent of its predecessor. Including gimbal for AI tracking, red frame around the lens and manufacturer’s logo on the front. The OBSBOT Tiny 3 is connected at the back via USB-C and is magnetically attached to the monitor or display with a clamp. Of course, there is once again a 1/4-inch thread to attach the cam to a tripod if required.

The scope of delivery of the OBSBOT Tiny 3

Although the housing is largely made of plastic, the build quality is once again outstanding. Everything looks robust and of high quality – that’s how it should be. Incidentally, the Tiny 3 from OBSBOT comes with a practical carrying case. The manufacturer also includes a USB-A adapter in case you no longer have a USB-C port available.

Commissioning and software of the OBSBOT Tiny 3

  • Plug and play; ready to use immediately
  • Clearly structured software
  • Powerful features

In terms of commissioning, the OBSBOT Tiny 3 is on a par with the best webcams. Thanks to plug-and-play connectivity, the camera is ready for use immediately after connecting the USB cable and can be used for recording. The new edition comes with all the powerful AI features that the Tiny 2 already has – only significantly better, more intelligent and more versatile.

OBSBOT Tiny 3

The AI features and innovations of Tiny 3:

  • AI tracking 2.0: This further development of tracking intelligence, already familiar from the Tail 2, is now also available in the OBSBOT Tiny series.
  • Voice Tracking: Spatial audio information directly in the tracking, so that the camera can react naturally to the person speaking during live sessions.
  • Only Me and Object Tracking: The Tiny 3 can focus on one person in groups and also reliably track objects.
  • Gesture and voice control: The device can be operated using hand gestures or voice commands if required (in English)
  • OBSBOT Intelligent Directional Mic System: Combines omnidirectional microphone with two directional MEMS microphones. Preserves natural room acoustics while focusing on the person speaking and reducing side noise
  • Voice Locator: Spatial recognition of sound sources for voice-based interaction and voice-controlled camera control during live sessions

In order to be able to use these powerful features, the accompanying software OBSBOT Center is used, which significantly increases the range of functions and combines many exciting features with intuitive operation.

Absolutely everything can be set here in a tidy interface: AI tracking, gimbal control, field of view, tracking speed, HDR, focus, exposure and so on. You can also specify whether and, if so, which components of gesture control (e.g. zoom or tracking) and voice control (“Hi Tiny” to wake up, “Zoom in Closer” to zoom in) should be activated and which audio mode should be selected.

The virtual camera can then be used to refine the image with various filters and effects. For example, an artificial bokeh can be added or various beauty filters can be added to the image.

The filters (or LUTs, presets, whatever you want to call them) familiar from Tiny 2 are also back. All in all, a powerful but easy-to-use software that is completely convincing.

Picture and sound quality of the OBSBOT Tiny 3

  • 1/1.28-inch sensor with 50 megapixels
  • 4K/30 or 1080p/120
  • Precise autofocus; strong tracking

Of course, the image quality of the OBSBOT Tiny 3 is particularly interesting. After all, the new sensor has a size of 1/1.28 inches and is therefore significantly brighter than the 1/1.5-inch sensor of the Tiny 2. For comparison: even the new Insta360 Link 2 Pro does not achieve the same sensor size at 1/1.3 inches. So does the Tiny 3 have the edge in terms of image quality? Of course, I took a very close look at this for the test.

And I have to say: I was absolutely blown away by the picture quality. Like the Insta360 Link 2 Pro, the Tiny 3 also uses Dual Native ISO and covers an ISO range between ISO 100 and ISO 12,800, which makes it very flexible for low-light scenarios. The HDR display is also second to none, which the webcam owes to an advanced feature called DCG HDR:

This captures highlights and shadows simultaneously, with the help of Dual Conversion Gain (HCG = High Conversion Gain and LCG = Low Conversion Gain). This extends the dynamic range while significantly improving the signal-to-noise ratio. At the same time, motion blur is avoided.

The result is a fast, razor-sharp HDR image that also adapts very quickly and precisely to changing light scenes (for example with RGB backlighting or the addition of light sources).

The HDR works noticeably more reliably, precisely and accurately than with Insta360 and does not make any mistakes when the lighting situation changes. This was a problem with the Link 2 Pro. The image quality in the low-light test is also absolutely convincing, although in my opinion the Insta360 Link 2 Pro has the edge in terms of sharpness.

OBSBOT Tiny 3 low-light test:

Insta360 Link 2 Pro lowlight test:

If you decide to adjust the image manually (for example with regard to shutter speed or white balance), the image quality can be significantly improved, as the following example shows. When it comes to generating an artificial bokeh, the Tiny 3 is also one step ahead and crops people or objects much more reliably and accurately than its competitor.

One thing is certain: the OBSBOT Tiny 3 delivers outstanding image quality and is superior to its current biggest competitor in terms of the level of detail with good illumination, HDR display and bokeh. On the other hand, the Tiny 3 is a little weaker in terms of image sharpness in difficult lighting conditions.

Object tracking of the OBSBOT Tiny 3

The autofocus of the OBSBOT Tiny 3 also works very quickly and reliably, but the Insta360 Link 2 Pro focuses even faster. In practice, the two webcams don’t have much in common here. The AI tracking of the Tiny 3 also works excellently, while the object tracking is definitely an added value when recording product videos, for example.

Audio quality of the OBSBOT Tiny 3

The microphone quality of the OBSBOT Tiny 3 is also excellent for a webcam. The camera owes this to the new set-up, which consists of three individual microphones. Most webcams use simple electret condenser microphones, which are inexpensive to manufacture but often suffer from fluctuating quality and high susceptibility to interference.

Instead, the Tiny 3 uses advanced silicon microphones with MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology – the same hardware architecture used in high-quality true wireless headphones, professional hearing aids and studio equipment. This semiconductor manufacturing ensures consistently precise audio quality without serial variations. Thanks to low distortion even at high volumes, a high signal-to-noise ratio and a linear frequency response, the Tiny 3 delivers a clear, natural and professional sound. The result is a detailed sound with less post-processing and reliable performance in a wide range of environments – from a quiet studio to a noisy office.

OBSBOT Tiny 3 Review: Conclusion

The OBSBOT Tiny 3 presents itself in the test as a technically impressive 4K webcam that performs at the top level in almost all core areas. The image quality is particularly impressive with strong HDR, a high level of detail, reliable autofocus and excellent AI Tracking 2.0 including voice tracking and object tracking. The large 1/1.28″ sensor, dual native ISO and precise DCG HDR ensure a dynamic, stable image even in changing light conditions. Added to this are the extremely compact design, high-quality workmanship, flexible mounting via magnet and tripod thread as well as the powerful OBSBOT Center software, which combines a wide range of functions with ease of use. Thanks to modern MEMS microphones and spatial audio, the audio quality also clearly stands out from the webcam average and delivers a natural, clear sound without the need for external equipment.

The Tiny 3 only shows weaknesses at a high level. In difficult low-light scenarios, the image sharpness drops slightly in direct comparison with the Insta360 Link 2 Pro, and although the autofocus is very reliable, it is not quite as fast as its strongest competitor. In addition, the range of functions is so extensive that beginners will not be able to use all of the features straight away without training, which involves a certain learning curve.

All in all, the OBSBOT Tiny 3 is currently one of the most powerful webcams on the market and a real premium model in the 4K segment. With its combination of excellent image quality, powerful AI, high-quality audio, sophisticated software and compact design, it really delivers. However, the RRP of around 359 euros is not without its price tag. Especially when you consider that the closest competition costs almost 100 euros less.
