OMEN by HP Spacer Wireless TKL under test

Mechanical keyboards have taken their time to find their place on almost every gamer’s desk. Wireless peripherals are now becoming more and more common, and OMEN by HP has now gone one better with the Spacer Wireless TKL. A wireless, mechanical keyboard without a number pad for gamers. Can this become something? Because the price is quite something.

Design and finish

OMEN goes for a really simple design with the Spacer Wireless TKL – it’s matte black. Although the entire keyboard is made of plastic, that’s really well made for it. Nevertheless, we have to say that we would have expected a bit more for the price. Aluminum cases are meanwhile already offered in the lower price segment. Why they chose plastic here will surely have had its reasons.

The Spacer Wirless TKL even offers LED lighting, even if it is kept simple. The software, which we’ll get to later, also only offers a few different profiles. Either the whole keyboard lights up or only certain keys. If you want your own colors, we have to disappoint you, red and white are the preset colors, which we can’t change either.

Since it’s a TKL keyboard that’s also wireless, you’ll basically always have a nice tidy desk on which the Spacer Wireless TKL’s simple design fits in well. And we don’t have to do without the multimedia keys, since they can be operated via the F-keys in combination with FN. By the way, this also makes macros possible.

We would like to call the magnetic palm rest a small highlight. Not only its size makes it special, but also the padding. We can rest our hands on it in a relaxed manner and they are well supported, even after several hours of use it is still more than comfortable.

Typing and gaming with the Spacer Wireless TKL

Omen is probably deliberately relying exclusively on the Cherry MX Brown. There is no other switch with which you can acquire the keyboard. The advantage of the Cherry MX Brown is a noticeable pressure point after a short stroke distance. It also requires less force to release. It’s hardly worth mentioning that everyone has different opinions about mechanical switches. Since these are tactile switches, they are more suitable for typing. Direct triggering is achieved with linear switches. Writing with the OMEN Spacer Wireless TKL is really fun due to the pressure point. The keycaps also contribute to this. These are a bit rounded so that the fingers lie better on the keyboard.

In addition, the switches are designed for longevity. Up to 100 million clicks should be possible with the Cherry MX Brown. The normal sized keycaps also contribute to the typing comfort. Especially with TKL keyboards, smaller caps are often used.

Battery life

A whole 75 hours of battery life are specified. Quite sporty, but definitely possible. The status can be viewed via the software, but only in increments of ten. Thus, we cannot say whether the battery level drops evenly.

We cannot say whether the 75 hours will be reached completely. The display was at 50 percent after about 55 hours, so the runtime was at 41 or 50 percent. It is important that the illumination is turned off. The runtime drops drastically when it is fully turned up. After about 13 hours, this was the end.

Software

HP OMEN Gaming Hub is the software for the Spacer Wireless TKL. After the start, you are first flooded by a multitude of advertisements. On the left side we see our keyboard, which we can use to access the settings for it.

Up to five profiles for the key assignment of the P1 to P5 keys can be stored on the keyboard. More profiles as well as the RGB settings can be saved as well after registration.

We can adjust the illumination as well, although the color scheme is very limited. We can dim the lighting (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% percent), and choose three different effects. However, the colors always remain the same – red and white.

Conclusion

The Spacer Wireless TKL from OMEN has a lot going for it. Wireless, compact, and well-made are just some of the attributes of how you could describe this keyboard. For lovers of mechanical keyboards with tactile switches without click, the Spacer Wireless is suitable and it stands out with a very pleasant typing feel due to the keycaps.

However, it still collects negative points. On the one hand, there is the high price. Even though quality and features have their price, 200 Euros is already a proud price. Compared to other manufacturers that offer wireless, mechanical keyboards, the Spacer Wireless TKL is still in the lower range. On the other hand, we also have to criticize the software. Right at the start, we are inundated with advertisements instead of directly getting to the essentials – namely the configuration of our keyboard.

Nevertheless, we do not want to write off the OMEN Spacer Wireless TKL, since it is a really solid keyboard that can especially appeal to frequent typists. The prerequisite is, of course, a preference for the Cherry MX Brown switches. The compact design and wireless functionality make it particularly suitable for a tidy desk.

90/100

Great wireless keyboard that has its price. The biggest weakness is probably the software.
