The best Stream ever? The Cherry Stream (2019) keyboard in test

With the wide range of keyboards on offer today, you can fulfil every wish. Mechanical keys with different pressure points, different feedback and different volume. Especially when it comes to gaming, new possibilities are always being sought to recognize the keystroke as quickly as possible, so that even optical mechanical buttons are already in use. But not always fast buttons are needed. Whoever sits at the computer for a long time and uses the keyboard to work has other wishes. A reasonable feedback is always good, but here ergonomics and typing feel are important. With the Stream series, Cherry mainly addresses the “professional typists” and now offers “the best stream ever”. What makes the Stream so good and how it compares to other keyboards we have tested for you.

Scope of delivery

The scope of delivery includes everything you need. Next to the keyboard, there is only a note for warranty and environmental protection, as the packaging carries the logo of the blue angel. Otherwise, nothing else is needed beside the keyboard. Plug it in and get started.

By the way, the Blue Angel is an eco-label of the German government, which distinguishes products that pay special attention to environmental protection. This includes criteria such as durability and reparability, the building structure and connection technology, the choice of materials and labeling, as well as the material requirements for the case parts. Other keyboards would perhaps be entitled to do so, but the eco-label is not awarded automatically, but must be applied for.

Design and workmanship

While design is quite important for gaming keyboards and keyboards are designed to be as extravagant as possible, it’s not so important for keyboards that are mainly used for working. Therefore, the Stream is absolutely plain and elegant. The space not occupied by the 105 standard keys is filled by additional keys. Only the small red lettering “Stream” in the lower right corner shows with some color which keyboard is in front of you here, and the logo with lettering from the manufacturer glows in silver in the middle of the lower edge.

The processing, on the other hand, is of course an important factor here as well, and here cherry cannot be proven to be unclean in any way. Every key, every rubber coating, simply everything fits perfectly. Every key offers a clear feedback, which feels the same with every key. This is how you can work well. The stands on the back are only made of plastic, but their mechanics are very stable and the bottom is also rubberized, so that the keyboard doesn’t slip even when it’s upright.

Keys and features

The keys of the previous Cherry Stream keyboard were already quite quiet, but with the new SX scissor mechanism, the keystroke is even quieter. Especially in an office with a lot of workstations, the noise level in general would thus be significantly improved. Moreover, this is also interesting for a home, when the loud clicking of mechanical keys gets you on the alarm clock. The buttons are designed for 20 million operations. The volume in combination with the typing feel of the buttons is an unbeatable combination.

When it comes to the equipment, you have to keep in mind that this is not a gaming keyboard. This means that the ten additional keys have their function and there is also no software with which you can change the assignment. There is also no RGB-illumination, as this is simply not needed. The only illuminated elements are small dots as an indicator, for example for the activation of the Num-Pad. Of the ten additional keys, six keys are for multimedia control and four keys are for general use. Here you can open your browser, mail program or calculator at the touch of a button. The last key allows you to lock the computer if you need to leave the office quickly.

Ergonomics and practice

Apart from the already mentioned keyboard highlights, ergonomics is what really matters. How good are the keys really? It’s nice that they are quiet and give a good typing feel, but how does it look in practice? In the end, everyone has to answer this question for themselves, as everyone has their own preferences, but our test shows the following: Even after several hours of typing, writing and working, the Stream offers a really pleasant typing feel.

Due to the flat design, no wrist-rest is needed and so it is possible to work on the keyboard for several hours without problems. The feedback with every keystroke is really a great thing especially in combination with the volume. I usually use the TTT Premium X1 RGB Gaming Keyboard from Thermaltake, which gives great feedback itself, but the typing noise is worlds apart.

Conclusion

So how can you summarize the Cherry Stream? It is the best Stream ever and even outside this product series it will be difficult to find an office keyboard with such a combination. Even the highest demands are satisfied here. The typing feel is incomparable and offers a great result even over a longer period of time.

Sure, the Stream is not a gaming keyboard and doesn’t come around with so much knick-knacks either, but if you are looking for a keyboard for writing texts, programming or the like, you should take a look at “the best Stream ever”.
