To make the switch from WhatsApp to Telegram easier, the latter has been offering the option to transfer chat histories and even media files like pictures and videos for some time now. This means that your message chats will not be lost when you switch – you can export them to Telegram with just a few clicks and continue them there without any problems or losses. But the prerequisite is: Both chat partners, i.e. your contact and of course yourself, must have a Telegram account.
Important notes on chat transmission
Note that on Telegram, regular chats are not end-to-end encrypted, as is the case by default on WhatsApp. The end-to-end encryption ensures secure message communication by allowing the transmitted data to be decrypted only by the sender and recipient. In this way, the contents of your chats are protected from unauthorized access by third parties. To activate the encryption, Telegram offers the option “Start secret chat”. To do this, open the (imported) chat and click on the three dots in the top bar.
A second thing you have to consider when exporting your WhatsApp chats: Each chat must be exported individually. Whether individual or group chat does not matter for this, as long as the requirement from above applies: each contact must also be logged into Telegram, because otherwise you can not select it for export or import.
