MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe test: What the Android TV box can do

  • elegant, white design
  • compact and lightweight
  • high-quality workmanship

An Android TV Box adds smart TV functions to a TV, provides access to streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and allows you to play local media content. It provides access to various apps and games via the Google Play Store and supports voice control and smart home integration. It also transforms older televisions into modern multimedia hubs and allows personalized adjustments to the user interface.

The manufacturer’s new flagship, the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe, marks the spearhead of this segment in terms of features and scores with its cutting-edge equipment.

Visually, the square, white box makes quite an impression. With its white color scheme and grey underside, the KM2 Plus Deluxe looks a bit like a Wi-Fi repeater and, with dimensions of 109 mm x 109 mm and a low height of just 24 mm (including the rubber feet), hardly takes up any space on or under the TV. The weight of just 199.5 grams also makes the TV box the ideal companion on vacation or when travelling.

A white Plexiglas cover is attached to the top, which is visually appealing with the silver manufacturer’s logo. On the front, you will find three status LEDs and an HDMI logo, while the connections are located on the left-hand side and the back of the device.

But it’s not just the design of the Android TV box, which costs around 150 euros, that is pleasing; the build quality is also beyond reproach. The device feels absolutely robust and of high quality.

Scope of delivery, connections and connection

  • Cable and remote control included
  • HDMI 2.1
  • two (slow) USB ports; Wi-Fi 6; Bluetooth 5.0

So that you can get started straight away after purchasing the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe, the manufacturer includes almost everything you need for operation in the box. In addition to the streaming device itself, the scope of delivery also includes a white HDMI cable with a length of 1.2 meters, a compact 12-watt power supply unit, a remote control and a quick start guide.

The manufacturer has only omitted the two AAA batteries for the remote control, so you will have to provide these yourself.

In terms of connectivity, the KM2 Plus Deluxe is also well equipped. HDMI 2.1 and power cables are connected at the rear. The port selection is supplemented by IR, AV and an optical SPDIF connection, as well as an RJ45 Gigabit LAN port.

On the left, on the other hand, there are two USB-A ports for connecting external devices or storage solutions, although these are only available in the slow 2.0 standard. The whole thing is rounded off by a microSD card slot, which can be used to expand the internal memory as required.

If you don’t want to operate the TV box wired, you can use the fast and reliable Wi-Fi 6 connection, while other end devices can be paired wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0.

The connection options and connections on the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe have been significantly upgraded compared to the normal Plus (without Deluxe in the name) and are ideally equipped for the 4K age.

The remote control of the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe

  • precise and fast
  • useful additional buttons

The remote control of the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe has also undergone a significant upgrade. It works via Bluetooth and IR and now offers new number buttons, among other things, which extend its functionality.

It also enables voice control and has additional buttons for YouTube, Netflix or Prime Video, which can be used to quickly call up the respective app. They can also be customized.

The remote control responds quickly and reliably and allows precise navigation through the Android TV interface.

Setup, performance and practice

The MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe is quick and easy to set up. Simply connect the TV box to the power supply and TV, power the remote control with batteries and you’re ready to go. You can then configure the network and make further settings during the setup process.

A particularly practical feature is that the setup can be carried out directly via the mobile device in conjunction with an Android smartphone. Wi-Fi access and Google account are then transferred directly to the TV box.

The performance of the system is excellent. This is thanks to the Amlogic S905X4-J quad-core processor with four Cortex A55 cores and clock speeds of up to 2 GHz, which the manufacturer combines with 4 GB of RAM.

This ensures butter-smooth navigation through the entire user interface, which is around 30 percent better than that of the predecessor CPU used in most TV boxes. In practical terms, the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe is significantly faster than my Samsung Smart TV from 2020 and my LG C1 from 2022.

Switching between apps or scrolling within applications is extremely fast. At the same time, the chip supports AV1 decoding, which is now important for most popular streaming services.

As the KM2 Plus Deluxe uses the Google Play Store, games can of course also be installed on the TV box. 32 GB of system memory is available for this purpose, of which 28 GB can be used effectively. This can of course be expanded using a microSD card.

Gaming on the TV box also works very well, while the built-in Mali G31 MP2 GPU provides decent performance to handle even somewhat more complex mobile games. However, you should not expect the performance of current mid-range or flagship smartphones.

Interface and practical test

  • tidy Android UI
  • fairly up-to-date security patch
  • Chromecast and Miracast

The MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe comes with an Android TV interface based on version 11 of the OS. The initial boot process with the initial setup takes around 30 seconds, but once the setup is complete, the TV box is ready for use in around 2 seconds.

The initial setup also includes a firmware update of around 700 MB, which improves performance and updates the Android TV OS security patch to March 5, 2024, among other things.

The interface has a clear structure and is divided into three areas: Home, Discover and Apps. The Home area provides access to the installed streaming services and apps, as well as a handful of recommendations. The Discover area displays personalized recommendations for previously defined services, while the Apps area offers a quick selection of installed programs.

Chromecast and Miracast are also supported, which work perfectly in practice, although they are not displayed completely without latency. A slight delay is noticeable.

Voice control, which is triggered at the touch of a button, is of course particularly practical. This allows you to open apps and games by voice command or use the Google Assistant to call up information from the Internet and view the weather forecast.

MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe picture quality

  • excellent picture quality
  • impeccable streaming performance

There is also nothing wrong with the picture quality of the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe TV box. The maximum display is in 4K resolution including HDR with Dolby Vision support, which of course looks excellent with appropriate source material.

In terms of picture quality and streaming performance, there is absolutely nothing to complain about, although your TV or playback device and the quality of the content to be displayed are of course the deciding factors here.

MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe test: Conclusion

With the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe, the manufacturer offers an excellent Android TV box that is not only impressive in terms of appearance and workmanship, but also from a technical point of view.

First and foremost is the fast processor which, in combination with the ample RAM, enables an excellent working speed. This means that start-up and navigation are significantly faster than with many (somewhat older) smart TV sets.

The TV box displays content in 4K including HDR and Dolby Vision with very good picture quality – at least if your TV supports this, of course. Thanks to Dolby Atmos support, a lot is also offered in terms of sound.

In my opinion, the MECOOL KM2 Plus Deluxe has no real points of criticism, especially as the price of around 150 euros (RRP) seems fair. The only drawback is the lack of USB-C or at least faster USB 3.0 ports, but I think that’s perfectly acceptable.
