AMD Ryzen 6000U/H and Radeon RX 6000S for notebooks presented

AMD is blowing another attack on the gaming notebook market and introduced exciting innovations with the AMD Ryzen 6000U/H CPUs and the Radeon RX 6000S graphics unit, which should enable even higher performance in compact laptops thanks to Zen 3+, RDNA2 and 6-nanometer technology.

AMD Ryzen 6000U/H: New mobile processor presented at CES

AMD’s CES presentation focused on the Ryzen 6000U/H, a new mobile processor with which they want to conquer the gaming notebook market. The Zen 3+ cores installed in it reach up to 5 GHz depending on the version, which is primarily achieved by the manufacturing in the 6-nanometer format. Thus, the new memory standards DDR5/4800 and LPDDR5/6400 are also supported.

Above all, the integrated Radeon graphics unit increases noticeably thanks to RDNA2 architecture with up to 12 shader clusters. In the case of the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U, the integrated graphics unit is supposed to work almost twice as fast as in the case of the predecessor Ryzen 7 5800U and can also easily beat the Nvidia counterpart GeForce MX450. Other features include ray tracing and improved energy efficiency.

Significantly more power

On this “Rembrandt” base, AMD is introducing an all-new portfolio of mobile processors that offer up to eight Zen 3+ cores and a maximum of 16 threads. Starting with the AMD Ryzen 5 6600U with 6 cores / 12 threads (clock speeds: 2.9 GHz /4.5 GHz in Boost), to the new top model Ryzen 9 6980HX with 8 cores and 16 threads (3.3 GHz / 5.0 GHz clock speeds).

According to AMD, the 6800U is almost twice as strong as the Ryzen 7 5800U in games. However, a 5000 model with 15 watts of power was compared with the new chip with 28 watts. Thus, the conditions are not identical.

The new CPU is also said to offer a significant increase in performance when it comes to video encoding. Once again, AMD draws a comparison between the 6800U and 5800U, with the new generation said to be a whopping 70 percent faster. GPU-accelerated 3D rendering in Blender is even said to increase by 130 percent.

The new CPUs, codenamed Rembrandt, are also much more energy-efficient and offer more than 50 new features for energy management and deep sleep states. Thus, the Ryzen CPUs are not only more frugal in terms of energy consumption, but also work more efficiently in terms of power consumption. 15 percent less consumption when web browsing and 40 percent when streaming videos are promised.

AMD Radeon RX 6000 S and M

AMD is also expanding its lineup of dedicated graphics units with new models in the Radeon RX 6000 S and M series. The previous three variants are joined by a whole five new M-series models as well as three models of the brand-new S-series.

The latter presents itself as a counterpart to NVIDIA’s MaxQ line and comes up with lower clock rates and consequently also lower TGPs. The new top model, Radeon RX 6850M XT, with a clock rate of 2463 MHz and 12 GB GDDR6, continues to work on the basis of Navi 22, but should enable a performance gain of around 7% in gaming compared to AMD’s previous leader, the RX6800.

On the other hand, the Radeon RX 6650M (2222 MHz, 8 GB GDDR6) including the XT model (lower clock rate, but 32 instead of 28 compute units) already works with Navi 23 and is supposed to be a full 20 percent faster than the already available RX 6600M.

Especially for slim notebooks, the new S-versions Radeon RX 6800S, Radeon RX 6700S and Radeon RX 6600S are positioned below, which are supposed to work significantly more energy-efficient.

Prices and Availability

The complete new mobile series around AMD Ryzen 6000U/H and Radeon RX 6000S is currently already being delivered to notebook manufacturers. The real market launch should then take place from February 2022, with the new series likely to result in numerous notebook announcements.
