Class action against Amazon Prime Video advertising subscription

There was a lot of anger when Amazon suddenly demanded a surcharge for ad-free use of the streaming service in February 2024. This was an immediate thorn in the side of consumer advocates. Now the Saxony Consumer Center has filed a class action lawsuit. Anyone who feels that their rights have also been violated can now join it.

Amazon Prime Video vs. consumer advocates

In February, Amazon Prime Video suddenly and for many unexpectedly split its streaming subscriptions. While there was previously only one subscription model, the tech company now differentiates between a subscription with ad breaks and an ad-free version. While the advertising subscription retains the same price, Amazon charges a surcharge for its subscription without advertising. And that’s not all.

In addition to the advertising, the basic subscription is also said to suffer from disadvantages in terms of picture and sound quality. The consumer advice center in Saxony finds the procedure unlawful and sees the tech company’s actions as a hidden price increase. Furthermore, it is a significant change to current contracts. Customers had not given their consent to this.

A court is now to clarify whether Amazon Prime Video was really entitled to take this action or whether the right lies on the side of the consumer advocates. However, Amazon is not only up against the consumer advice center in Saxony. As the consumer advocates have filed a class action lawsuit, it is also possible for affected customers to appear as plaintiffs.

How to take part in the class action

The court action was preceded by a warning letter that the consumer advice center issued against Amazon a few weeks ago. However, the injunction had no effect. The tech company did not change its new subscription strategy. Now the consumer advocates have come up with heavier weapons and filed a class action lawsuit. You can take part in this too.

If you would like to join the plaintiffs, you can register using a form on the website of the Federal Ministry of Justice. If the consumer advocates are victorious, you could receive a partial refund of your Amazon Prime Video subscription fees. However, you will have to wait a little while. After all, the proceedings could take years.
