Getir delivery service ends business in Germany

Getir wanted to conquer the European market with a veritable expansion campaign. It was not too expensive for the fast delivery service for food and everyday items to buy up competitor Gorillas. But the project has apparently failed. Getir and Gorillas will soon no longer be available in Germany.

The deep fall of Getir

The coronavirus pandemic has brought economic disaster for many companies. But where there are losers, there are also winners. Online mail order companies such as Amazon and streaming services such as Netflix were not the only ones to post record sales – especially during the lockdowns. Delivery services also enjoyed almost gigantic demand.

The services Flink, Gorillas and Getir offered their customers delivery in just a few minutes. This was convenient not only for those who preferred not to leave their homes for fear of infection. Even those who were already sitting on the couch in their pyjamas watching TV were happy to reach for their smartphone to order a few quick and convenient evening snacks.

But with Getir, one representative is now apparently experiencing a deep fall and is drawing the consequences. In view of the poorly performing business, the Turkish company will close its operations in Germany on May 15, 2024. This is according to a report in Wirtschaftswoche. As a last desperate act, Getir is said to have tried to buy provider Flink, according to the report. However, this failed.

Getir’s takeover strategy has worked in the past. With Gorillas, for example, the group bought up a serious competitor without further ado. According to a report in the Financial Times, the delivery service is said to have put a sum of 1.25 billion US dollars on the table. It was hoped that this would give it the delivery service throne in Europe. Now all that remains is the domestic market in Turkey.

Threat of redundancies

The end in Germany is not only a major failure for Getir’s expansion plan. It is also downright bad news for the delivery service’s workforce. The Turkish delivery service recently had just under 1,800 employees. As reported by Wirtschaftswoche, some of the employees are said to have already been made redundant. However, this misfortune will also befall the remaining employees.
